Family Narrative

Mary Ann Royal Turner (listed in 1900 as May S. Turner) - Born: December 1832 in Georgia; compiled/cemetery material gives 8 December 1832 in Houston County, Georgia - Died: 19 July 1905 - Buried: Woodlawn City Cemetery, Adel, Cook County, Georgia - Marital status in 1900: Widowed - Occupation: Farmer - Children: 11 children born, 9 living, per the 1900 census - Identification note: The 1900 household head is recorded as May S. Turner. The current evidence trail treats her as Mary Ann Royal Turner, widow of Job Turner. - Parentage caution: Isaac I. Royal and Nancy Murray remain secondary-supported parent candidates only. No direct parent-link record has been reviewed for Mary Ann Royal in this entry.

Husband

Job Turner (also Joab Turner and J. S. Turner in some records) - Born: about 1823, probably North Carolina, per later household context and secondary sources - Died: 18 December 1881, per cemetery and compiled material - Buried: Woodlawn City Cemetery, Adel, Cook County, Georgia - Marriage context: A Confederate widows application cited on Mary Ann Royal Turner's Find a Grave memorial says Mary married Job Turner in Marion County, Georgia, in 1850. A Brooks County marriage record also exists for Mary A. Royal and J. S. Turner on 8 February 1879; the context of that later record remains unresolved. - Parentage caution: Amos Isaac Turner and Nancy Smith remain secondary-supported parent candidates only. No direct parent-link record has been reviewed for Job Turner in this entry.

Children and Family Reconstruction

The household's child count remains difficult. The 1900 census says Mary had 11 children, 9 living. The 1860, 1870, and 1880 census trail; cemetery records; FamilySearch profiles; Find a Grave memorials; and Ancestry tree hints produce overlapping but not identical child lists.

Current evidence supports William J. Turner, Sarah E. or Sarah Abby Turner Middlebrooks, Isaiah S. Turner, Isaac McDaniel Turner, Albert Augustus Turner, Thomas J. Turner, John A. Turner, Charlie W. Turner, Mary Julia "Mollie" Turner Alderman, Nancy A. or Nancy Orelia Turner Alderman, Robert Amos Turner, and Arthur C. Turner as part of the working reconstruction, with different confidence levels. Martha Lee Turner Middlebrooks should not be counted as a child of Job and Mary on current evidence because her Georgia death-record detail names John Turner and Jane Vance as parents.

Sarah E. or Sarah Abby Turner is now treated as Sarah Abby Turner Middlebrooks. FamilySearch profile KC36-B57 attaches the 1870 Turner household census, the 1874 Georgia county marriage to W. M. Middlebrooks, the 1880 census as Sarah A. Middlebrooks, and cemetery-index records under Sarah Abby Turner Middlebrooks. The adult trail is supported by census and marriage evidence; the exact death date rests on cemetery-index evidence rather than a death certificate.

Robert Amos Turner is no longer only a tree-based candidate. FamilySearch profile KJP1-KG4 attaches Robert or Robert A. Turner to the 1870 and 1880 Turner household censuses, then follows him through 1897 Georgia marriage records, 1900-1920 census records, and a 1921 Florida marriage record. The census attachments are the main parent-link evidence. His exact birth and death details still need image-level review.

Thomas J. Turner and Arthur C. Turner remain unresolved children. Thomas appears in the 1860 household as a one-year-old. A possible adult candidate, Thomas J. Turner born September 1859 in Georgia and living in Alachua County, Florida, in 1900, lacks parent-link evidence tying him to Job and Mary. Arthur C. appears in the 1880 household, age four, but no secure adult or death trail was found.

Isaiah Smith Turner supplies one important parent-link record. FamilySearch Florida death record FPD3-J25 names Job Turner and Mary Ann Royal as Isaiah's parents. This supports Mary's maiden name and the Job-Mary child framework, but it does not name Mary Ann Royal's own parents.

Alderman Household Members

Mary Julia "Mollie" Turner Alderman is the best current identity for the Julia Alde in Mary's 1900 household. Ancestry and FamilySearch index the 1900 entry under Alde, Aldwin, Alderman, and Turner variants. The 1910 Colquitt County census places Mollie J. Alderman, age 39 and widowed, as head of household with Wm I. Alderman, age 16, listed as her son; the census reports one child born and one living. This is the clearest direct source found for William's mother. Mollie's 1948 Valdosta death notice names one son, W. I. Alderman of Valdosta, and one sister, Miss Nancy Alderman of Moultrie. This strengthens the Mollie-William-Nancy cluster but still does not name Mollie's parents.

William Alde in the 1900 household is best identified as William Ivey/Ivy/Ira Alderman, born about October 1893 and died in 1956. His adult trail is supported by the 1910 census with Mollie J. Alderman, the 1915 Colquitt County marriage to Lula Banks, World War I service records, Veterans Administration Master Index, 1950 census, Find a Grave or headstone material, NUMIDENT-linked child records, and the full 1956 obituary image in The Valdosta Daily Times. Those records support William's adult identity and later family, but they do not name his father. The 1956 obituary names wife Lula Banks Alderman, daughters Shirley Bacon and Lynette Overby, sons Earl, T. I., Aaron, and Howard Alderman, 11 grandchildren, church membership, military service, funeral, and burial details, but no parents.

The leading father candidate for William is J. S. Alderman. Ancestry's Georgia county marriage record shows J. S. Alderman married M. J. Turner in Brooks County on 8 January 1893. The timing fits William's October 1893 birth, and the names fit the Mary Julia "Mollie" Turner Alderman interpretation. Ancestry tree hints identify J. S. as James Seward "Send" Alderman, son of Jonathan Howell Alderman and Amy Ann McKinney. No reviewed record directly names William Ivey/Ivy/Ira Alderman as James Seward Alderman's son, so this remains candidate evidence rather than proof.

Nancy A. or Nancy Orelia Turner Alderman has an adult trail supported by Find a Grave, Florida death-index material, the 1950 census, the 1900 Mary Turner household context, and Ancestry tree claims naming Job Turner and Mary Ann Royal. The tree claim remains secondary. No new parent-naming record was found in the June 2026 review.

Census and Record Trail

Mary Ann Royal Turner is followed through a broad census and cemetery trail. The 1900 household head is recorded as May S. Turner, a census/index form now treated as Mary Turner in the wider record chain. In 1850, Mary A. Turner, age 16, was recorded in Macon County, Georgia, in a Turner household headed by Levi Turner. The same record says she was married within the year. The exact connection between that household and Job Turner remains unproved. In 1860, she appears in New River, Florida, in the household of Joab Turner, an apparent variant of Job Turner. The Ancestry index reads her name as Levi A. Turner, but the later record pattern supports treating this as a misreading of Mary or Mary A. R. Turner. In 1870, Mary Turner was in Colquitt County, Georgia, with Job Turner and children. In 1880, Mary A. R. Turner was in District 1311, Berrien County, Georgia, with Job Turner and a large child group. By 1900, she was widowed in Barney, Brooks County.

Mary is identified in compiled and cemetery material as Mary Ann Royal Turner, born 8 December 1832 in Houston County, Georgia, died 19 July 1905, and buried at Woodlawn City Cemetery in Adel, Cook County, Georgia. The Houston County birthplace and 1850 marriage statement come from a Confederate widows application cited on her Find a Grave memorial. That application says she was born in Houston County, married Job Turner in Marion County, Georgia, in 1850, and that Job served in Company D, Georgia 20th Cavalry, later transferred to the Georgia 22nd Battalion. The application should be treated as a strong lead until the image or copy is reviewed directly.

Job Turner is supported as Mary's husband by the 1860, 1870, and 1880 household trail, the Confederate widows application citation, cemetery material, and the 1879 Brooks County marriage record for Mary A. Royal and J. S. Turner. The 1879 marriage may be a late formalization or re-recording of an older marriage, but that explanation should not be treated as proved until the record image and county context are reviewed. Job is also indexed or described as Joab Turner and J. S. Turner in some sources. His parentage remains unresolved by direct evidence.

Mary Ann Royal's parentage remains secondary-supported rather than proved. FamilySearch, Ancestry trees, and GeorgiaRoyal.net identify Isaac I. Royal and Nancy Murray as her parents. GeorgiaRoyal.net places Mary Ann Royal, born 8 December 1832 and married to Job Turner, among the children of Isaac I. Royal and Nancy Murray. This should remain labeled as compiled evidence until a census household, estate record, marriage record, Bible record, or other parent-link source is found.

Job Turner's parentage also remains secondary-supported rather than proved. FamilySearch and the FamilyTreeDNA Turner DNA Project identify him as a son of Amos Isaac Turner and Nancy Smith, with a Lenoir County, North Carolina birth. The Turner DNA Project line #119540 is useful context, but it is not a documentary parent-link record.

Connections to Other Barney Families

  • HH#175 Charlie W. Turner is a son in the Job Turner and Mary Ann Royal Turner family reconstruction. His separate household entry documents his adult trail.
  • HH#177 Isaac McDaniel Turner is also a son in this family reconstruction. His household entry documents his adult trail and his Alderman marriage connection.
  • HH#144 and HH#170 connect indirectly through the Hiers-Alderman network. Mary Turner's daughters Mollie and Nancy Orelia married into the Alderman family, while the Hiers households carry Alderman ties through Mary Catherine Alderman.
  • HH#153, HH#155, HH#176, HH#178, and HH#180 belong to the broader Alderman cluster relevant to the Turner-Alderman marriages. Exact kinship paths should be cited from direct records where available and from compiled Alderman sources only as secondary support.
  • HH#168 and HH#169 lived in District 1311, Berrien County, the district where the Turner family was enumerated in 1880. This is geographic context only, not a proved kinship connection.

Research Notes

  • The 1900 Julia Alde entry is probably Mary Julia "Mollie" Turner Alderman. The 1910 Mollie J. Alderman census, the 1948 Mollie death notice, the 1948 funeral notice, Find a Grave, Ancestry indexing, Ancestry tree/photo hints, and FamilySearch profile KCR2-SGP all support that interpretation. A primary record naming Mollie's parents is still needed.
  • William Alde is probably William Ivey/Ivy/Ira Alderman. The 1910 census directly names Mollie J. Alderman as his mother. The leading father candidate is J. S. Alderman, who married M. J. Turner on 8 January 1893 in Brooks County, but no reviewed record directly names William's father.
  • Mary J. Turner and Nancy A. or Nancy Orelia Turner need reconciliation. Nancy Orelia has a supported adult trail; Mary J. remains unresolved. A marriage, death, probate, Bible, church, or child record naming parents would clarify whether Mary J., Mary Julia/Mollie, and Nancy were separate daughters or partly duplicate identities.
  • Martha Lee Turner Middlebrooks should stay excluded from the Job-Mary child list unless stronger original evidence explains the conflict. Her own Georgia death-record detail names John Turner and Jane Vance as parents.
  • Sarah Abby Turner Middlebrooks and Robert Amos Turner have improved adult trails, but image-level review of key attached sources would strengthen both. Sarah's exact death date rests on cemetery-index evidence. Robert's exact birth and death details remain dependent on compiled or attached-source trails.
  • Thomas J. Turner and Arthur C. Turner each appear in the child census trail but lack a secure adult or death trail.
  • Mary Ann Royal's parents and Job Turner's parents remain secondary-supported only. The current entry should not present Isaac I. Royal and Nancy Murray, or Amos Isaac Turner and Nancy Smith, as proved parents without direct or near-direct evidence.
  • The 1879 Brooks County marriage record for Mary A. Royal and J. S. Turner needs image and courthouse-context review before explaining it as a formalization or re-recording of the 1850 marriage.

Military Service

William Alde, the grandson in this 1900 household, is best identified as William Ivey, Ivy, or Ira Alderman. His adult trail includes World War I service records, Veterans Administration Master Index material, a military headstone application, and a 1956 obituary that mentions military service. Those records support a household-member service note, though they do not resolve his father's identity.

Research Status

Source-researched, not source-exhausted. The main household framework, Mary-Job marriage context, 1860-1900 census trail, Isaiah parent-link record, Sarah Abby adult trail, Robert Amos household placement, Mollie/William Alderman interpretation, and William's adult trail are supported by online records. The unresolved points are Mollie's direct parent proof, William's father, Mary J./Nancy/Mollie reconciliation, Thomas J. and Arthur C. adult or death trails, Martha Lee's excluded parentage conflict, Job Turner's parentage, Mary Ann Royal's parentage, and the 1879 marriage-record context.
