Family Narrative
Daniel Alderman in HH#153 is best identified through a steady record chain rather than through one single naming record. He appears with Margaret/Margret/Marget J. Alderman in the 1900 Barney census, the 1910 Robinson, Colquitt County census, and the 1920 Robinson, Colquitt County census. The 1880 Colquitt County marriage record for Daniel Alderman and Margaret J. Register is the main spouse anchor. The married-years entries in 1900 and 1910 fit that marriage date.
Daniel's earlier placement is supported by the 1860 Colquitt County household of John A. Alderman and Emily S. Alderman, where Daniel H. Alderman appears as a young child. It is also supported by the 1870 Colquitt County household of John Alderman and Susannah Alderman, where Daniel appears with an overlapping sibling group. The 1860 census is the strongest direct household evidence now found for Daniel's placement with John A. and Emily S. Alderman.
Aldermans in America pp. 406-407 is useful, but it is secondary evidence. Page 406 gives John A. Alderman's dates as 25 June 1827 to April 1907 and identifies his wife as Emily Norman, born 24 March 1826, daughter of James M. Norman. Page 407 says that after Emily's death, John A. Alderman married his second cousin, Mrs. Susan Jane (Alderman) Stevenson, widow and daughter of James Alderman. It also says Susan had no children by her first husband. This supports reading Emily Norman as the mother-context for the older children and Susan Jane Alderman Stevenson as the later wife and stepmother in the 1870 household.
The same book must not be used as direct proof of Daniel's full identity. Page 406 lists child #8 as David Harrison, born 12 August 1860, and child #9 as Zilpha, born 30 June 1862. The census chain names Daniel H./Daniel, and the 1870 household also includes a separate David Alderman. The discrepancy may reflect an omission, a conflation, or an error in the book's child list. Until a direct record explains it, the entry should preserve both facts: the census record supports Daniel in the John A. Alderman household, while the book supports the Emily Norman/Susan Jane Alderman Stevenson marriage sequence.
Margaret's Register connection is stronger than several of the remaining Alderman parentage details. She appears in 1870 with Elvy Register and Louisa Register, in 1880 as Margaret Register, sister-in-law in the William and Louisa Norman household, and in 1930 as widowed Margret Alderman, sister-in-law in the William J. and Luizer/Louisa Normens household. That pattern supports Margaret J. Register Alderman as Louisa Register Norman's sister.
The 1930 widowed-Margaret record narrows Daniel's death window. Daniel was alive with Margaret in the 1920 Colquitt County census. Margaret was widowed in Brooks County in 1930. No direct death, burial, or probate record for Daniel has been found in the current research trail.
Susan Alderman, age 9 in the 1900 household, remains documented only at that anchor point. No reliable adult marriage, death, burial, or later census record has been identified for her. She may have married under an unknown surname, died young, or been missed through indexing or enumeration problems. The current entry should not assign her an adult identity without direct evidence.
A separate Daniel J. Alderman in the 1880 Nankin, Brooks County census belongs to a different Daniel Jefferson Alderman line tied to Amanda/Amanda O'Neal and Leah Studstill. That man is also present in the 1900 Quitman census as a widowed boarder with children Jacob W. and Horace, while HH#153 Daniel is simultaneously in Barney with wife Margarett and daughter Susan. The Amanda/Daniel Jefferson trail should not be merged into HH#153.
Daniel's middle initial remains unresolved. The 1860 census gives Daniel H. Alderman. The 1920 census/index and an 1898/1899 Brooks County tax-digest index point to a possible W initial. Neither source gives a full middle name. The safest form remains Daniel Alderman, with H and W treated as documented variants.
Connections to Other Barney Families
- HH#57 Norman connection: Margaret J. Register's sister relationship to Louisa Register Norman connects this household to the Norman/Register network already documented in the Barney project.
- Alderman network: Daniel belongs near the larger Alderman cluster represented in HH#155, HH#176, HH#178, and HH#180. The John A. Alderman household evidence remains the direct-record anchor. Aldermans in America pp. 406-407 provides secondary support for the John A. Alderman / Emily Norman / Susan Jane Alderman Stevenson family structure, with the Daniel/David Harrison child-list discrepancy preserved.

Research Status
- Status: Well-researched, with a completed online source-image pass for the main census and marriage chain. Not marked source-exhausted because death, burial, probate, Susan Alderman's adult identity, and some courthouse-level questions remain unresolved.
- Strengths: Strong 1900 household anchor; direct 1880 marriage record to Margaret J. Register; consistent 1900-1920 Daniel/Margaret census trail; strong 1930 widow anchor for Margaret; Daniel Jefferson Alderman conflation separated; secondary Alderman-family context now added with clear limits.
- Remaining cautions: Daniel's death/burial/probate trail is missing; Margaret's final record after 1930 is missing; Daniel's full middle name remains unresolved; Susan Alderman's adult identity is not found; Aldermans in America clarifies the likely Emily/Susan wife sequence but remains derivative and preserves a Daniel/David Harrison child-list discrepancy; derivative FamilySearch tree structure should be used only as a source-control checklist, not as proof by itself.
