The Barney History Project: The people, places, and stories of Barney, Georgia

Household #180: Alderman, James Carlton

In the 1900 Barney census, this household was headed by James Alderman and included 9 people. The census summary records the head's listed occupation was Farmer, 1 spouse or marital partner, 7 child or stepchild.

Household Snapshot

A good way to read this page is to start with James Alderman (age 24, born in Georgia, listed as Farmer). That placed the household in the farm economy around Barney, where land, crops, livestock, kin labor, and seasonal work shaped daily life as much as the town's railroad and stores did.

The household was not just the head's name. In 1900 it included spouse or marital partner Martha Alderman; children Enoch Alderman, Newton Alderman, Florence Alderman, Joseph Alderman, James Alderman, Brooks Alderman, and Essie Alderman. Those names are the starting point for the later family, labor, marriage, migration, and neighborhood trails below.

Every listed person in this household was reported as born in Georgia, which makes the page a local-family snapshot unless later records show movement into or out of Barney.

Newspaper and Public-Record Trail

  • 1899 newspaper context: A 14 Oct 1899 Valdosta Times article names Jim Alderman among the Barney-area farmers, providing a contemporary local reference consistent with James Carlton Alderman's 1900 farming household.

Children and Later Trails

The household table above already lists the children present in 1900: Enoch Alderman, Newton Alderman, Florence Alderman, Joseph Alderman, James Alderman, Brooks Alderman, Essie Alderman.

Where a child's adult trail is not identified here, the gap is intentional. The page should wait for a marriage, death, cemetery, obituary, probate, later census, or other direct record before naming a later spouse or descendant line.

Family Narrative

James Carlton Alderman (age unknown in 1900, Farmer) - Born 12 February 1851, Coffee County, Alabama (per Geneanet and death certificate; 1860 census says Alabama, 1870 says North Carolina, 1900 says Georgia — the weight of evidence favors Alabama) - Died 26 February 1925, Barney, Brooks County, Georgia (age 74) - Buried Sardis Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Berlin, Colquitt County, Georgia - Occupation: Farmer (owned farm free of mortgage in 1900; farm laborer in 1870) - 1899 newspaper context: A 14 Oct 1899 Valdosta Times article names Jim Alderman among the Barney-area farmers, providing a contemporary local reference consistent with James Carlton Alderman's 1900 farming household. - Death Certificate: Georgia (parents listed as William Alderman and Cathern Wells)

  • Father was William Alderman (1824-1864), died during the Civil War era, approximately age 40. Son of George Alderman (1797-1882) and Nancy Carlton (1803-1887) per the 1957 book Aldermans in America.
  • Mother was Catherine Wells (1821-1891). The death certificate lists her maiden name as Wells; census records showed her under the Alderman surname after marriage. She lived 27 years beyond William's death.
  • Paternal grandparents were George Alderman (1797-1882) and Nancy Carlton (1803-1887), documented in Aldermans in America as the 15-2 family line. George was born in Duplin County, North Carolina, moved to Bulloch County, Georgia in 1826, and settled near Pavo in Brooks County. Three of George's sons died in the Confederate Army.

Martha Ann Baker. - Born 20 February 1856, Palatka, Putnam County, Florida (per Geneanet; census records say Georgia; FindAGrave says Colquitt County, Georgia) - Died 27 March 1918, Colquitt County, Georgia (age 62) - Buried Sardis Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Berlin, Colquitt County, Georgia (same as James) - Married 7 January 1880, Colquitt County, Georgia (marriage certificate confirms; 1900 census lists marriage year as 1876, which does not match the certificate) - FindAGrave Memorial: 88925343 (via Ancestry collection 60525)

  • Father was Absalom Baker (appearing as Absolom in 1870 census, age 62). Born approximately 1808. In the 1860 census he was age 51, listed in Colquitt County with wife Martha and six children.
  • Mother was Martha Ann Mims (1831-1912). Geneanet lists her as Martha Ann "Annie" Mims. This connects the Baker family to the Mims family network documented in HH#172 and HH#173.
  • Maternal grandparents were Joseph W. Mims (1782-1870) and Elfira Martin (1793-1876).

Seven children are directly documented in the 1900 household: Enoch, Newton, Florence, Joseph, James, Brooks, and Essie. Earlier text treated Hattie and Sidney as documented children, but the June 2026 FamilySearch/Ancestry pass did not find direct records for either one. Hattie remains a Geneanet-only lead, and Sidney remains a FindAGrave-child-list lead unless a direct birth, death, burial, or census source is found.

  1. Enoch Alderman (b. 4 November 1881). Head of his own household by 1920, with James living as a widower in Enoch's home. Wife Viola Wingate; later marriage lead to Alphia Neling in 1926.
  2. Newton Alderman (25 Sep 1882-14 Oct 1966). Direct Ancestry search found 1900/1910/1920/1930/1940/1950 census leads, 1910 Brooks County marriage lead, WWI draft card naming relative Mary Alderman, Georgia Death Index, SSDI, and Find a Grave.
  3. Sidney Florence Alderman Harris (4 Dec 1883-29 Oct 1957). Married William L. Harris, 8 January 1909, Brooks County. A Georgia death record for child Thomas Jay Harris names parents William L. Harris and Florence Alderman.
  4. Joseph "Joe" Alderman (12 Jan 1885-10 Jun 1960). NUMIDENT names parents James C. Alderman and Martha A. Baker; later census/death/burial records place him in Cook County.
  5. James Alderman Jr. (6 Apr 1888-11 Dec 1977). Supported by 1900/1920/1930/1940/1950 census trail, WWI draft/service records, SSDI, Georgia death index, VA master index, and FindAGrave.
  6. Brooks Alderman (25 Dec 1891-3 Aug 1973). Direct Ancestry search found 1900/1910/1920/1940/1950 census leads, WWI draft/service records, Veterans Administration/BIRLS records, SSDI, Georgia Death Index, and Find a Grave.
  7. Essie Alderman Simmons (18 Nov 1893-31 Jul 1939). Supported by 1900/1910 census entries, Brooks County marriage to L. N. Simmons on 22 June 1916, and FindAGrave.

Secondary-only leads not counted as directly documented children: - Hattie Alderman (1886-1895) — Geneanet-only lead; no direct record found in the June 2026 online pass. - Sidney Alderman — appears as a child on FindAGrave but not in the census trail as a separate child; may reflect confusion with Sidney Florence Alderman Harris unless direct proof appears.

Connections to Other Barney Families

  • HH#176 Jonathan Howell Alderman (Source-Researched): Jonathan H. Alderman (15-2-14 in the book) is the brother of James's father William. This makes James Carlton the nephew of Jonathan H. and places him in the Alderman founding family line.

  • HH#178 George W. Alderman (Source-Researched): George W. is the son of Jonathan H. Alderman, making him James Carlton's first cousin. George's wife Isabel Coulter and James's wife Martha Baker were neighbors in the Barney precinct.

  • HH#153 Daniel Alderman (Well-Researched): This younger Daniel, born about 1860, is not the elder Daniel Alderman (1774-1857) who was the reported father of George Alderman. HH#153 Daniel probably belongs to the separate William C. Alderman → John A. Alderman branch, but the compiled genealogy calls the relevant child David Harrison. The two Daniels must remain separate.

  • HH#155 Mitchell Enoch Alderman (Source-Researched): Mitchell's death certificate names John Alderman and Susie Stevens as his parents. The compiled genealogy places John A. under William C. Alderman, a different William from James's father. Mitchell and James belong to collateral branches of the same compiled Alderman family; the shared upper ancestry remains secondary-supported.

  • HH#144 Jacob H. Hiers (Source-Exhausted): James's sister Mary Wright Alderman (1859-1949) married into the Hiers family per the Aldermans in America book, connecting HH#180 to the Hiers household cluster.

  • HH#172 James D. Johnson / HH#173 George A. Johnson (both Source-Researched): The Mims family connection comes through Martha's mother Martha Ann "Annie" Mims. Joseph W. Mims (1782-1870), Martha's maternal grandfather, belongs to the same Mims family as Sidney L. Mims who married James C. Johnson (parents of James D. and George A. Johnson). This connects HH#180 to the Johnson-Mims line documented in HH#172 and HH#173.

Research Notes

  1. Direct image/citation review for the 1900 census record and all household members, including Martha's child-count statement. FamilySearch lists seven children in the household; the prior "seven born, six living" statement should be treated as unverified until image-level review.
  2. Enoch's death/burial still needs direct proof, though 1900/1920 census, WWI draft, marriage, and Florida state census records now support his adult trail.
  3. Direct record for Hattie Alderman, currently supported only through Geneanet-style compiled material.
  4. Direct proof for a separate Sidney Alderman, listed by Find a Grave but not found in the census trail. Current evidence supports Sidney Florence Alderman Harris as Florence, not an additional child.
  5. Direct source for Martha Ann Baker's birthplace and parentage. Her father Absalom Baker is supported by census context; the Mims line and Palatka birthplace need original or near-original support beyond Geneanet/Find a Grave.
  6. Image-level review of James Carlton Alderman's death certificate, marriage certificate, and Martha's death/burial sources.
  7. Reconciliation with HH#176 and the Aldermans in America line: James Carlton is not the Col. 28 James, but his exact place in the wider Alderman network should be cited from the book and direct records separately.

Research Status

Source-researched, not source-exhausted. James Carlton Alderman's identity, marriage to Martha Baker, census trail, and death record are well supported. Newton, Brooks, Florence, Joseph, James Jr., and Essie now have direct adult/death or marriage trails. Enoch has a stronger adult trail but still lacks a direct death/burial source in this entry. Hattie and a separate Sidney remain secondary-only leads, and the Baker-Mims connection still needs original or near-original support beyond Geneanet/Find a Grave.
