The Barney History Project: The people, places, and stories of Barney, Georgia

Household #176: Alderman, Jonathan Howell

In the 1900 Barney census, this household was headed by J H Alderman and included 8 people. The census summary records the head's listed occupation was Farmer, 1 spouse or marital partner, 6 child or stepchild.

Household Snapshot

A good way to read this page is to start with J H Alderman (age 53, born in Georgia, listed as Farmer). That placed the household in the farm economy around Barney, where land, crops, livestock, kin labor, and seasonal work shaped daily life as much as the town's railroad and stores did.

The household was not just the head's name. In 1900 it included spouse or marital partner Amy Alderman; children Howell Alderman, Pearl Alderman, William F Alderman, Mattie Alderman, Dudly Alderman, and Flavious Alderman. Those names are the starting point for the later family, labor, marriage, migration, and neighborhood trails below.

Every listed person in this household was reported as born in Georgia, which makes the page a local-family snapshot unless later records show movement into or out of Barney.

Children and Later Trails

The household table above already lists the children present in 1900: Howell Alderman, Pearl Alderman, William F Alderman, Mattie Alderman, Dudly Alderman, Flavious Alderman.

Where a child's adult trail is not identified here, the gap is intentional. The page should wait for a marriage, death, cemetery, obituary, probate, later census, or other direct record before naming a later spouse or descendant line.

  • Full Name: Amy Ann McKinney (census variants: Amy A. Kinney, Amie Alderman, Amy Aulderman, Annie A. Alderman; marriage record: "Amy Ann McKiney" — clerk's phonetic spelling)
  • Maiden Name: McKinney (confirmed by FindAGrave, SAR application, and 1850/1860 censuses)
  • Born November 27, 1847, Berrien County, Georgia (per FindAGrave memorial 36858360 and Geneanet; death index says "Annie A.")
  • Died October 5, 1922, Barney, Brooks County, Georgia (per FindAGrave and Georgia Death Index; certificate #25010-D)
  • Buried Antioch Cemetery, Adel, Cook County, Georgia (beside J.H.)

  • Years Married: 45 (1910 census = ~1865; consistent with either 1862 or 1863)

Both of J.H.'s parents were living in his household at the time of the 1880 census, an uncommon detail that anchors the family structure firmly.

  • George Alderman (age 85, b. ~1795 NC) — J.H.'s father; book says born Feb 14, 1797; died Apr 11, 1882 (just 2 years after census)

Some may reflect name variants of children listed above (e.g., Mary Eunice/Elizabeth, William Michael/Franklin).

  • 1850 Census: George Alderman household, Division 53, Lowndes County, Georgia. Jonathan H. Alderman age 3 (b. ~1847). Father George (53), mother Nancy (47), siblings: William W. (24), Daniel H. (21), Mary Ann (19), Martha (14), David J. (12), Nancy C. (10). Lowndes County = precursor to Brooks County (formed 1858).

Father Isham (52), mother Prissilla (48), siblings Mary (22), Sarah Ann (20), Elizabeth (10), Nancy (7). Also J.T. Wright (21), Lucy Wright (14), Jesse Hollinsworth (22) in household. (Pre-marriage record for wife.)

  • 1870 Census: Jonathan Alderman, age 24, Farm Laborer, Brooks County GA (Quitman PO). Wife Amy (age not listed — indexing omission). Children: George (6), Nancy (4), James (3), Priscilla (infant). Children match book perfectly.

  • 1880 Census: J.H. Alderman, age 34, Farmer, Morven, Brooks County GA. Wife A.A. age 33. Nine children: George W. (16), Nancy E. (13), James S. (11), Ruth P. (9), Mary U. (8), Macie E. (6), Lucy A. (5), Gordon (4), Minnie (2). George Alderman (85) and Nancy Alderman (75), both born NC, living in household — J.H.'s parents. Both parents born NC (confirms 1910 census; 1900 census erroneously listed both GA).

  • 1900 Census: J.H. Alderman, age 53, Farmer, Barney, Brooks County GA. Wife Amy (52). Children: Dudley (19), Flavius (15), Howell (14), Pearl (12), William (10), Mattie (7). Married 37 years (consistent with 1863 marriage). Both parents born NC. Owned farm free of mortgage.

  • 1910 Census: Jonathan Alderman, age 63, Farmer/employer, Barney, Brooks County GA. Wife Amie (62). Sons Flavius (25) and Frank (19) still in household. Married 45 years. Both parents born NC. Confederate survivor marked "Ca." Could read and write. Owned farm free.

  • 1920 Census: Jonathan H. Aulderman, age 72, Robinson, Colquitt County GA (Bailer St). Wife Amy (72). Surname indexed as "Aulderman" — enumerator or indexer error for Alderman. Father born NC, mother born GA [corrected in brackets to NC per other censuses]. No occupation. Owned home free. Had moved from Brooks to Colquitt County between 1910 and 1920.

  • Marriage Record: Amy Ann McKiney married J H Alderman, August 2, 1863, Berrien County, Georgia (Berrien Record of Marriages, 1860-1875, page 64). Note: "McKiney" is the clerk's phonetic spelling of McKinney. The book "Aldermans in America" gives the date as August 2, 1862. The discrepancy is unresolved; the book cites county records directly and may be more accurate.

  • Death Record — Jonathan Howell Alderman: Georgia Certificate of Death. Died June 6, 1924, Berrien County. Born March 14, 1847, South Carolina. Father listed as "Dutch Yarrow" (registrar's mishearing of George Alderman). Mother listed as Nancy Carlton. Cause of death not extracted.

Book Reference: "Aldermans in America" (1957).

Jonathan H. Alderman appears as entry 15-2-14 in the genealogical work "Aldermans in America" by Jennie Alderman Park (1957). The numbering system traces his lineage:

  • 15 = Daniel Alderman (1774-1857), David Sr.'s eldest son → stayed in North Carolina
  • 15-2 = George Alderman (1797-1882), Daniel's son → moved to Georgia 1826
  • 15-2-14 = Jonathan H. Alderman (1847-1924), George's 14th and youngest son

The book lists 16 children for J.H. and Amy Ann, provides full birth/death dates and spouse names for each, and records that J.H. "was also in the ranks with Lee" during the Civil War. Three of George Alderman's sons died in Confederate service: William (killed by shell at Rappahannock, August 1862), Daniel H., and David J.

Correction: earlier research incorrectly described George, William, and Timothy as "three founding brothers." David Alderman Sr. (1749-1831) is the patriarch. Daniel (Col 15), William (Col 26), and Timothy (Col 27) are David's sons, making them brothers. George (15-2) is Daniel's son, making him their nephew, not their brother.

Connections to Other Barney Families

  • HH#: #176; Person: Jonathan H. Alderman; Book ID: 15-2-14; Relationship to David Sr.: Great-grandson (David→Daniel→George→JH)
  • HH#: #178; Person: George W. Alderman; Book ID: 15-2-14-1; Relationship to David Sr.: Great-great-grandson (JH's 1st child)
  • HH#: #177; Person: Isaac Turner; Book ID: —; Relationship to David Sr.: Son-in-law (m. Nancy Ellen Alderman)
  • HH#: #144; Person: Jacob H. Hiers; Book ID: 26-1-6; Relationship to David Sr.: Great-grandson (David→William→Polly→Jacob)
  • HH#: #144; Person: Sallie Strickland (wife); Book ID: via 27-4; Relationship to David Sr.: Great-granddaughter (David→Timothy→Jency→Sallie)
  • HH#: #153; Person: Daniel Alderman; Book ID: unresolved; Relationship to David Sr.: probable William C. → John A. branch, subject to the Daniel/David Harrison conflict
  • HH#: #155; Person: Mitchell Enoch Alderman; Book ID: John A. branch; Relationship to David Sr.: compiled collateral descent through William C.; upper links are secondary-supported
  • HH#: #180; Person: James Carlton Alderman; Book ID: George → younger William branch; Relationship to David Sr.: compiled descent through Daniel and George, with William/Catherine-to-James verified
  • HH#: #171; Person: Mary Turner; Book ID: —; Relationship to David Sr.: Daughters Mollie and Nancy Orelia married Aldermans

The Barney Alderman households fit a larger compiled family network, but not every path is proved at the same level. The Jonathan Howell, George Washington, and James Carlton lines belong to the George Alderman branch. Mitchell Enoch belongs to the collateral William C. → John A. branch. HH#153 Daniel probably belongs beside Mitchell in John A.'s family, but the Daniel/David Harrison conflict remains unresolved. The Turner connections (HH#171, #177) came through marriages involving Alderman daughters.

Research Notes

  1. Birth date discrepancy: Death certificate says March 14, 1847; FindAGrave, SAR application, and book all say March 17, 1847. The March 17 date has three independent sources but the death certificate is an official record. Unresolved.

  2. Marriage date discrepancy: Ancestry marriage record says August 2, 1863; book says August 2, 1862. The book cites county records directly and may be more authoritative. The actual document image would settle this. Unresolved.

  3. Birthplace discrepancy: Death certificate says South Carolina; 1850 census and typed genealogy say Georgia; FindAGrave says Lowndes County, Georgia; Geneanet says Berlin, Banks County, Georgia. Most likely: born in South Carolina (as death cert states), raised in Georgia from early childhood. Lowndes County was the precursor to Brooks County; the area near the SC/GA border makes cross-state birth and raising plausible.

  4. 1900 census parent birthplace error: 1900 census lists both parents born in Georgia, but 1880 and 1910 censuses confirm both born in North Carolina (consistent with the Alderman family's NC origins). The 1900 entry is an error.

  5. HH#180 James Alderman identity: James Carlton's death certificate names William Alderman and Catherine Wells as his parents. The compiled genealogy places that William as a son of George Alderman and therefore as Jonathan Howell's brother. James Carlton is not the older James Alderman listed as David Sr.'s son.

  6. Direct child-level records: Several child dates and spouse names come from Aldermans in America, SAR/FindAGrave, or Geneanet-style compiled sources. Direct Ancestry searches already corrected Dudley Vernon Alderman's death to 22 Jul 1965 and Flavius Anderson Alderman's death to 8 Dec 1971, so any remaining book/tree-only child dates need the same primary-record review.

  7. Claim: J.H. = Jonathan Howell Alderman, son of George + Nancy Carlton; Confidence: High; Basis: Death cert + SAR + FindAGrave + book all agree

  8. Claim: Wife = Amy Ann McKinney, daughter of Isham M. + Priscilla; Confidence: High; Basis: 1850/1860 census + marriage record + SAR + FindAGrave all agree
  9. Claim: Both parents born North Carolina; Confidence: High; Basis: 1880 + 1910 censuses agree; 1900 is outlier
  10. Claim: Parents George + Nancy lived in J.H.'s 1880 household; Confidence: High; Basis: 1880 census explicit listing
  11. Claim: Birth date March 17, 1847; Confidence: Medium-high; Basis: 3 independent sources (SAR, FindAGrave, book) vs. death cert's March 14
  12. Claim: Marriage date August 2, 1862; Confidence: Medium; Basis: Book cites county records; Ancestry says 1863; actual image not viewed
  13. Claim: Birthplace South Carolina; Confidence: Medium; Basis: Death cert says SC; most other sources say GA; border area plausible
  14. Claim: HH#178 George W. = J.H.'s first child; Confidence: High; Basis: 1870/1880 census ages match; book 15-2-14-1 confirms
  15. Claim: HH#177 Isaac Turner married J.H.'s daughter Nancy Ellen; Confidence: Confirmed; Basis: 17 primary sources; Isaac is son of Job Turner (HH#171) and brother of Charlie W. Turner (HH#175); Nancy Ellen is J.H. Alderman's daughter (HH#176); obituary confirms Isaac's sisters married Alderman men

Research Status

Source-researched, not source-exhausted. Jonathan and Amy's identities, their parents, and the main census trail are strongly supported. The remaining work is image-level reconciliation of birth/marriage discrepancies and replacement of compiled child-list details with direct child-level records where available. Dudley Vernon and Flavius Anderson now have direct post-1900 trails that supersede the older compiled death dates. Aldermans in America, SAR, Geneanet, and Find a Grave should be treated as secondary or derivative unless the entry cites the underlying original record.
