Research Methodology
This website distinguishes between several kinds of source access:
- Directly inspected source: The original record, scan, image, or full text was examined.
- Index-only result: A catalog or database index was examined, but the underlying record image was not available.
- Retained transcription: A transcription made during an earlier inspection is preserved, although the original source may not be open during a later review.
- Link not currently available: The citation and identifying details are retained, but the linked source cannot presently be reopened because of a paywall, temporary outage, changed address, or access restriction.
- Negative search result: A defined search did not locate the record. This does not prove that the record does not exist.
Citations describe what was actually inspected whenever that distinction matters. A source does not become invalid merely because its website later becomes unavailable, but conclusions drawn from an index or retained transcription remain qualified until the original record can be checked.
Images and rights
Images are used for historical and educational purposes. Captions identify the source, date, creator, or holding institution whenever that information is known. Rights vary by image. Some images are in the public domain, while others remain subject to the terms of the archive, newspaper, photographer, contributor, or other rights holder. Anyone wishing to reuse an image should consult its caption and linked source.
AI-generated reconstructions are labeled as such. AI-restored or AI-enhanced images are also labeled because the processing may alter details; they should not be treated as unmodified historical photographs. When an original source is available, the caption or citation identifies it.
If an image is incorrectly credited or raises a rights concern, please contact barneyga1571@gmail.com.
