Family Narrative

Charlie W. Turner (age 31, Farmer) - Full Name: Charlie W. Turner (census variants: Charley Garnes, Chas Turner, Charlie W Turner, Charles W Turner, Chas W Turner, Chas A Turner) - Born January 1869, Georgia (per 1900 census, most specific; later censuses range 1865-1871) - Died October 3, 1942, Colquitt County, Georgia (per obituary; death index lists September 26, 1942, Certificate #19266) - Occupation: Farmer (owned farm free in 1900; mortgage in 1910; no occupation listed in 1920) - Married March 13, 1894, Berrien County, Georgia (C W Turner to Mattie Strawder) - Parents: Job Turner (b. ~1823, North Carolina) and Mary A. R. Turner (b. ~1833, Georgia)

  • Note on surname: The 1900 census indexer recorded the surname as "Garnes." All subsequent censuses confirm the surname as Turner. The Garnes reading is an indexer error.

Wife: Martha A. "Mattie" Strawder.

Mattie Strawder Turner (age 24 in 1900) - Full Name: Martha A. Strawder (nickname Mattie) - Born ~1876, Georgia - Died 8 August 1929, Cumberland, Harlan County, Kentucky (Kentucky death record) - Maiden Name: Strawder (confirmed via 1880 census and 1894 marriage record) - Parents: John T. Strawder / J. T. Strauder (b. ~1844, Georgia) and Julia E. Newton / Guisie E. Strawder (b. ~1844, Georgia). The 1880 census records her mother as Guisie E.; the 1929 Kentucky death record names her parents as J. T. Strauder and Julia E. Newton. - Grandfather: William Strawder (b. ~1823, Georgia, in 1880 household)

  • Note on neighbors: In the 1880 census, the Turner household (dwelling 385) and the Strawder household (dwelling 386) were next-door neighbors in District 1311, Berrien County. Charlie and Martha grew up as literal neighbors before their 1894 marriage.

  • Thomas Watem: 1900 age 5; 1910 —; 1920 —; Likely Thomas W. Turner; still not safely matched after 1900. Ancestry searches return a Thomas W. Turner in north Georgia, but no parent-linked record ties him to Charlie and Mattie.

  • Charley E. Turner: 1900 age 2; 1910 age 12; 1920 age 22 as Ellis; Now supported as Charlie Ellis / Charles Ellis Turner, born 19 July 1897 in Colquitt County; later Florida death and burial trail located.
  • Nettie Mary Turner: 1900 age 11/12; 1910 —; 1920 —; Married Talmadge Franklin Gordon, 25 Jan 1920; in Gordon household 1930, 1940, 1950; died 23 Mar 1964, Colquitt County
  • Margaret: 1900 —; 1910 age 15, indexed "Son"; 1920 —; Likely daughter; enumerator error on gender and relationship
  • Mary K.: 1900 —; 1910 age 10; 1920 —; Not found after 1910
  • Ellis: 1900 —; 1910 —; 1920 age 22; Son; last seen 1920

  • Note on "Margaret": The 1910 census indexed this child as "Son" with the given name Margaret. Given the name and later household composition, this is almost certainly a daughter and the gender/relationship were recorded in error.

Charlie W. Turner:. - Georgia Death Index: Charlie W Turner, Certificate #19266, Colquitt County - Death index date: September 26, 1942 - Obituary date: October 3, 1942 (published October 4, 1942, The Macon News) - Obituary survivors: C. E. Turner (son), T. F. Gordon (son-in-law) - Discrepancy: The death index lists September 26 while the obituary lists October 3. The obituary, published the day after the stated death, may be more reliable for the actual death date.

Mattie Strawder Turner:. - Kentucky death record: Mattie A. Turner, died 8 August 1929, Cumberland, Harlan County, Kentucky; parents J. T. Strauder and Julia E. Newton. FamilySearch also indexes the 1910 and 1920 Georgia census trail for Martha/Mattie Turner with Charles/Chas W. Turner. This explains why no Georgia death certificate was found.

Charley E. / Charles Ellis Turner:. - FamilySearch and Ancestry both locate Charlie Ellis Turner in World War I draft records, born 19 July 1897 in Colquitt County, Georgia, resident of Colquitt County. This matches Charley E. in 1900/1910 and the Ellis Turner age-22 son in the 1920 Charles W. Turner household. Later records identify him as Charles Ellis Turner, died 27 October 1983 in Florida, with Find a Grave support.

Nettie Mary Turner Gordon:. - Married Talmadge Franklin Gordon on January 25, 1920, Colquitt County, Georgia. - Appears as M. Nettie Gordon in the 1930 Moultrie household with husband Talmadge F. Gordon, son Talmadge F. Gordon, and father Charles W. Turner. - Appears as Neltie/Nettie Gordon in the 1940 Moultrie household with husband Talmadge F. Gordon, son Talmadge F. Gordon, and father Chas Turner. - Appears as Mary T. Gordon in the 1950 Moultrie household with husband Talmadge F. Gordon Sr. and son Thomas F. Gordon Jr. - Georgia Death Index: Nettie T. Gordon, female, white, age 64, died March 23, 1964, Colquitt County, Certificate #007941.

  1. Charlie W. Turner was the son of Job Turner (North Carolina native) and Mary A. R. Turner (Georgia native), establishing a Berrien County Turner family line with roots in North Carolina.

  2. Charlie and Martha Strawder grew up as next-door neighbors in Berrien County (1880 census, dwellings 385-386) before their 1894 marriage.

  3. Mattie died in Cumberland, Harlan County, Kentucky, on August 8, 1929. After her death, Charlie lived with his daughter Nettie and son-in-law Talmadge F. Gordon in Moultrie for at least twelve years (1930-1940).

  4. The 1900 indexer recorded the surname as "Garnes." All later censuses use Turner, confirming the indexer made an error.

  5. Birth year drift across censuses: 1869 (1900) to roughly 1865 (1910) to 1871 (1920) to 1870 (1930-1940). The 1900 census, which gives a specific month (January 1869), is the most reliable.

  6. The 1910 census lists "Margaret" as a son. Given the name, this is almost certainly an enumerator error for daughter.

  7. Middle initial conflict: the 1920 and 1930 censuses give "W" while the 1940 index shows "A" with a correction note to "Chas W Turner." The W initial is better supported.

  8. The 1910 census lists Charlie's father's birthplace as North Carolina (correct, confirmed by 1880 census). The 1930 census lists Georgia instead, which is an error.

Connections to Other Barney Families

  • HH#177 Isaac Turner: Isaac is Charlie's older brother, both sons of Job Turner and Mary A.R. Turner. The 1880 census lists both in the parental household. Isaac married Nancy Ellen Alderman, daughter of Jonathan Howell Alderman (HH#176), creating a direct Turner-to-Alderman link. See HH#177 for full documentation.

  • HH#171 Mary Turner: Mary Ann Royal Turner (HH#171) is Isaac's mother and the matriarch of the Turner family. The 1880 census lists Isaac Mc D. Turner, age 23, single, in her household. HH#171, HH#175, and HH#177 are three households from the same family: Mary (the mother), Charlie (son #8), and Isaac (son #4). Two of Mary's daughters married Alderman men, and Isaac married Nancy Ellen Alderman (HH#176's daughter), creating Turner-Alderman links from both directions.
