Two children (Tempa and Thomas J.) appear only in 1880; two (Sarah and James) appear in 1870 and 1880. The two deceased children by 1900 are likely among those who appear in only one census enumeration.

Charles Pinkney Weeks served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.

  • Unit: Company H, 50th Georgia Infantry, Private
  • Enlisted: March 22, 1862
  • Service Notes: Injured or hospitalized during service; survived the war
  • Soldier Index: Record 1138:1588748 (Confederate Soldiers index)
  • Soldier Records: Record 1555:779070 (full name confirmed as Charles Pinkney Weeks, born about 1834)

Charles took the Reconstruction-era loyalty oath on July 6, 1867, in Butts County, Georgia, District 26 (Record 1857:1050468). This location is geographically inconsistent with all other records, which place Charles in Colquitt or Brooks County before and after the war. He likely spent time in Butts County during or shortly after the war, possibly while serving or recovering from his injury, before returning to South Georgia.

  1. FindAGrave Memorial #101885209 (Charles Pinkney Weeks): Born April 23, 1837; died August 7, 1901; Murphy Cemetery, Colquitt County, Georgia.
  2. FindAGrave Memorial #145288617 (Charles Pinkney Weeks): Born April 23, 1835; died August 7, 1901; Murphy Cemetery, Colquitt County, Georgia. (Ancestry-hosted index record — second memorial with different birth year.)
  3. Georgia Death Record #60768027 ("Pink Weeks"): Spouse listed as Rodie; child listed as Chas L. Confirms nickname "Pink." (Ancestry Collection 60525)
  4. FindAGrave Memorial #101884420 (Rhoda Weeks): Born August 31, 1840; died October 28, 1920; married 1861; Murphy Cemetery, Colquitt County, Georgia.
  5. FindAGrave US Index (Rhoda Ann Weeks): Maiden name Harrell; born August 31, 1840, Thomas County, Georgia; died October 28, 1920, Moultrie, Colquitt County, Georgia; buried Murphy Cemetery. (Ancestry Collection 60525)
  6. Georgia Death Record #127759 ("Rhodie Weeks"): Died October 28, 1920, age 81, Moultrie, Colquitt County, Georgia.

  7. Birth year inconsistency: Charles's birth year varies across sources — 1834 (Civil War records), 1835 (one FindAGrave), 1837 (another FindAGrave), 1838 (1900 census). The 1850 census lists him as age 12 (born ~1838), but the 1860 census shows age 23 (born ~1837) and the 1870 census shows age 31 (born ~1839). The most consistent cluster is 1837-1838.

  8. "Chason" is a middle name: Earlier confusion about whether "Chason" was Rhoda's maiden name has been resolved. Her maiden name is Harrell. "Chason" appears to be her middle name.

  9. 1880 middle initial discrepancy: The 1880 census lists "Charles T. Weeks," but no other record includes a middle initial "T." This may be an enumerator error or a name variant that was dropped in later usage.

  10. Mary Ann Weeks = "Janie" Pitts: The 1910 census shows Rodie Weeks (age 69, widow) living as mother-in-law in the household of Moses Pitts (age 46) with wife Janie Pitts (age 40). Janie Pitts (age 40, born ~1870) matches the age and position of Mary Ann Weeks (age 17 in 1880). The nickname "Janie" is a common shortened form of Mary Ann.

  11. James W. Weeks = HH#193: The 1900 census entry for HH#174 lists William Weeks (son, age 20) and Pinkey Weeks (granddaughter, age 11). Meanwhile, HH#193 lists James Weeks (age 28) as head with brother William (age 19). James W. Weeks (age 28 in HH#193) matches the expected age of Charles's son James (age 4/12 in 1870, age 2 in 1880). William in HH#193 (age 19) may be the same William listed in HH#174 (age 20) — the one-year difference is within census rounding.

  12. Butts County oath: The Reconstruction oath places Charles in Butts County in 1867, but every other record puts him in the Colquitt/Brooks/Lowndes area. This suggests a temporary wartime or post-war stay, possibly connected to his military service or recovery.

Connections to Other Barney Families

  1. HH#173 (George A. Johnson): Daughter Rhoda Ann Weeks married George A. Johnson on November 14, 1886, in Colquitt County. This is the primary cross-volume link — HH#173 and HH#174 are connected by marriage.

  2. HH#193 (James Weeks): Son James W. Weeks appears as head of HH#193 (age 28, married to Mary, with brother William age 19). Same age and location as Charles's son James. HH#193 is a child household of HH#174.

  3. HH#55 (James Harrell): James Harrell (age 37, b. ~1863, sawmill laborer) in Barney bears the same surname as Rhoda's maiden name. Lewis Harrell (Rhoda's father, b. ~1802 NC) was in Thomas/Colquitt County. James (b. ~1863) is roughly 60 years younger than Lewis, which makes a grandson relationship plausible. The HH#55 entry was marked research-exhausted before the Weeks/Harrell connection was known. If HH#55 is revisited, the Lewis Harrell line should be the first avenue of investigation.

  4. Pitts family: Daughter Mary Ann "Janie" Weeks married Moses Pitts. The 1910 census shows Rhoda (widow, age 69) living with them in Barney. No Pitts household appears in our 1900 Barney enumeration.

  5. Harrell family (Thomas/Colquitt County): Lewis Harrell (b. ~1802 NC) and wife Litty/Letha (b. ~1804 NC) appear in the 1850 Thomas County census and 1860 Colquitt County census. Ancestry suggested records show a "Chasn Harrell" in non-population schedules and a "Mrs Rhoda Harrell" in Georgia Property Tax Digests (1793-1892), suggesting Lewis died and his widow Rhoda (the elder, mother of our Rhoda) appears independently in tax records.

Discrepancies & Resolutions.

  • Issue: Birth year; Source A: 1900 census: ~1838; Source B: Civil War: ~1834; FindAGrave: 1835 or 1837; Resolution: 1837-1838 is the most consistent cluster; no single source is definitive
  • Issue: Middle initial; Source A: 1880: Charles T. Weeks; Source B: All other records: Charles Pinkney Weeks; Resolution: Likely enumerator error; no "T" appears elsewhere
  • Issue: Butts County oath; Source A: 1867 Reconstruction oath: Butts County; Source B: All other records: Colquitt/Brooks/Lowndes; Resolution: Temporary wartime or post-war residence
  • Issue: Rhoda's middle name; Source A: FindAGrave: Rhoda Ann; Source B: Census/other: "Chason" appears; Resolution: "Chason" may be a middle name alongside Ann, or an enumerator misread
  • Issue: Nickname; Source A: Full name: Charles Pinkney; Source B: Death record: "Pink Weeks"; Resolution: "Pink" is a clear shortening of Pinkney

Research Notes

  1. Direct 1900 image/citation check for HH#174. The correct Ancestry 1900 record is Pinksuy Weeks in Barney, Brooks County, record 52873574; older source text had at least one stale/cross-household record number.
  2. Parentage and full adult trail for Pinkey Weeks, granddaughter age 11 in 1900. A Colquitt County marriage record shows Pinkey Weeks married W. T. Richard on 5 December 1904, but it does not name parents.
  3. Direct proof that William Weeks in HH#174 is the same William living with James W. Weeks in HH#193.
  4. Adult or death trails for Sarah, Tempa, and Thomas J. Weeks.
  5. Direct marriage source for Charles Pinkney Weeks and Rhoda Harrell, if one exists; current marriage timing rests mainly on census and Find a Grave/compiled context.
  6. Image-level review of Charles's Confederate service file and Reconstruction oath, especially the Butts County oath location.

Military Service

Charles Pinkney Weeks served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The current page identifies him as a private in Company H, 50th Georgia Infantry, with Confederate Soldiers index and soldier-record references, and notes injury or hospitalization during service. The Butts County reconstruction-oath location remains a context question, but it does not remove the current service identification.

Research Status

Well-researched, not source-exhausted. The head, wife, census trail, military context, and Harrell connection are supported, but the 1900 granddaughter, several children, and a few key citation details remain open. Secondary cemetery/compiled material is useful for dates and burial but should stay labeled unless supported by original records.
