The Barney History Project: The people, places, and stories of Barney, Georgia

Household #155: Alderman, Mitchell Enoch

In the 1900 Barney census, this household was headed by Mitchell Alderman and included 4 people. The census summary records the head's listed occupation was Farmer, 1 spouse or marital partner, 2 child or stepchild.

Household Snapshot

A good way to read this page is to start with Mitchell Alderman (age 30, born in Georgia, listed as Farmer). That placed the household in the farm economy around Barney, where land, crops, livestock, kin labor, and seasonal work shaped daily life as much as the town's railroad and stores did.

The household was not just the head's name. In 1900 it included spouse or marital partner Georgia Alderman; children Shelton Alderman and John F Alderman. Those names are the starting point for the later family, labor, marriage, migration, and neighborhood trails below.

Every listed person in this household was reported as born in Georgia, which makes the page a local-family snapshot unless later records show movement into or out of Barney.

Newspaper and Public-Record Trail

  • This resolves the 1930 granddaughter question toward John F. rather than Shelton, though a birth, delayed-birth, death, or obituary parent-naming record would still be stronger.
  • Verify Shelton Madison Alderman and John Franklin Alderman with birth, death, obituary, SS-5, delayed birth, or other records naming parents.
  • Corroborate Geraldine Alderman's parentage with a birth, delayed-birth, marriage, death, obituary, or other parent-naming record.

Children and Later Trails

The household table above already lists the children present in 1900: Shelton Alderman, John F Alderman.

Where a child's adult trail is not identified here, the gap is intentional. The page should wait for a marriage, death, cemetery, obituary, probate, later census, or other direct record before naming a later spouse or descendant line.

Mitchell E. Alderman and Georgia Crosby were married in Colquitt County, Georgia, in 1889. The Ancestry marriage detail previously used for this entry gave 25 December 1889, while FamilySearch search results for the same Georgia Crosby / M. E. Alderman marriage cluster show 1889, 5 December 1889, and 28 November 1889 variants. The marriage is therefore solidly placed in Colquitt County in 1889, but the exact day should be tied to the best inspected image rather than harmonized silently. The 1900 census places Mitchell and Georgia in Barney District, Brooks County, with Shelton and John F. Alderman in the household. The checked 1900 Barney census report says Mitchell and Georgia had been married ten years, broadly matching the 1889 marriage record cluster, and records Shelton and John F. as sons. Earlier cleanup wording that called them stepchildren was erroneous and has been removed.

The household can be followed after 1900 in Colquitt and Brooks County records. In 1910, Mitchell and Georgia were in Robinson District, Colquitt County, with Madison S. and John F. in the household. Mitchell was recorded as working in a turpentine factory and owning his farm free. In 1920, Mitchell and Georgia were again in Robinson District, with no children in the household. In 1930, they were in Brooks County with granddaughter Geraldine, age seven, and boarder Loma Mitchell. The 1930 census says Mitchell could not read or write, which conflicts with the 1900-1920 literacy entries and may be an enumerator or informant difference. A 1940 Barney District census detail page places Geraldine Alderman, age 17, as daughter in the John F. Alderman household; FamilySearch independently indexes that 1940 result with parents John F. Alderman and June P. Alderman. This resolves the 1930 granddaughter question toward John F. rather than Shelton, though a birth, delayed-birth, death, or obituary parent-naming record would still be stronger.

The original death certificates now strengthen the death, parent, and burial evidence for both spouses. Georgia died 29 May 1937 at Edmondson-Brannen Hospital in Moultrie, Colquitt County, Georgia. Her certificate gives her birth date as 21 March 1871, birthplace as Brooks County, Georgia, parents as Adam Crosby and Lucy Griffin, both born South Carolina, and burial at Wesley Chapel, Berlin, Georgia, on 30 May 1937. The informant was J. F. Alderman of Barney, Georgia. Georgia's 1880 childhood census household also places her as a daughter of Adam J. Crosby and Lucy Crosby in Robinson District, Colquitt County, with Elizabeth, Isam T., William, Christiana, and Augustus Crosby in the same household. FamilySearch also surfaces an Augustus Lee Crosby death result naming Adam Crosby and Lucy Griffen Crosby as his parents, strengthening Augustus as Georgia's sibling in the Adam/Lucy Crosby cluster.

Mitchell died 29 December 1938 at Barney, Brooks County, Georgia. His certificate gives his birth date as 20 November 1868, birthplace as Colquitt County, Georgia, occupation as farmer, parents as John Alderman and Susie Stevens, and burial at Wesley Chapel, Pavo, Georgia, on 31 December 1938. The informant was Frank Alderman of Barney, Georgia. These certificates are direct support for the parent and burial details. FindAGrave screenshots reviewed for this project list John Franklin Alderman and Shelton Madison Alderman as children and list Crosby/Alderman relatives; the child links align with the checked 1900 Barney census report, though the memorial family links remain derivative leads until matched to direct parent-naming or sibling-proof records.

Connections to Other Barney Families

  • HH#153 Daniel Alderman: If HH#153 Daniel was John A. Alderman's son by Emily Norman, Daniel and Mitchell were probable half-brothers, not half-uncle and nephew. The census trail supports Daniel in John A.'s family context, but Aldermans in America calls the relevant child David Harrison. The relationship remains strong probable with that conflict explicit.
  • Alderman family cluster: Mitchell belongs in the broader Alderman cluster that includes HH#153, HH#176, HH#178, and HH#180, but the exact kinship paths should be cited from direct records where possible and from Aldermans in America only as secondary support.
  • Crosby-Alderman double marriage: Georgia Crosby's brother Augustus L. Crosby reportedly married Mitchell's sister Martha/Mattie J. Alderman. James did not locate the marriage certificate in this pass, but a Social Security Applications and Claims Index detail page for Mattie J. Alderman names spouse Augustus L. Crosby and child Dennis Wilson Crosby. This supports the couple as a collateral clue, but it is not a marriage record and should not be used to prove the exact marriage date or the full sibling network by itself.

Research Notes

  • Verify Shelton Madison Alderman and John Franklin Alderman with birth, death, obituary, SS-5, delayed birth, or other records naming parents. The checked 1900 Barney census report and derivative family sources call them sons; direct parent-naming records would strengthen, not reverse, that reading.
  • Verify Georgia Crosby's full sibling list from additional direct census, marriage, probate, or death records rather than relying on Geneanet, FindAGrave family links, or the Social Security Applications and Claims Index collateral clue alone. Her parents, Adam Crosby and Lucy Griffin, are directly supported by her death certificate, and the 1880 census directly places Georgia in Adam and Lucy's household with several likely siblings.
  • Verify Mitchell's siblings, half-siblings, and deeper Alderman lineage from direct census/probate/marriage records. Aldermans in America is useful but remains a secondary genealogy.
  • Cemetery-marker photographs or cemetery register entries would still be useful corroboration, but the original death certificates now directly support Wesley Chapel burial for both Mitchell and Georgia.
  • Corroborate Geraldine Alderman's parentage with a birth, delayed-birth, marriage, death, obituary, or other parent-naming record. The 1930/1940 census chain points to John Franklin Alderman as her father, but a direct parent-naming record would be stronger.
  • Reconcile Mitchell's birth year range: the original death certificate says 20 Nov. 1868, the 1900 census says Nov. 1869, and Geneanet / Aldermans in America give 20 Nov. 1870.

Open Research Questions

Research Status

  • Status: Source-researched, not complete.
  • Strengths: The household has a solid direct-record core: 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930, and Geraldine-linked 1940 census trail; Colquitt County marriage record; and original Georgia death certificates for both Mitchell and Georgia.
  • Remaining cautions: Shelton and John F. are recorded as sons in the checked 1900 Barney census report, so the earlier children-as-stepsons caution was erroneous and should not be preserved. Direct parent-naming records for the two sons would still strengthen the file. Much of the sibling, half-sibling, grandparent, and extended Alderman lineage depends on Aldermans in America, Geneanet, and FindAGrave rather than direct records. Georgia Crosby's parents are now supported by her death certificate and 1880 childhood census household, but her full sibling reconstruction still needs follow-through across later direct records.
