Sources still needed

  • Direct death certificate or obituary for John H. Ryall, if available, to supplement the cemetery record and close the final vital-record citation.
  • Direct death certificate or obituary for Libbie Alderman Ryall, if available, to resolve the March 15/March 16 death-date discrepancy.
  • Direct adult records for daughters Winnie Ruth Ryall Beaty and Doris Amy Ryall Hendrix. Winnie Ruth is now strengthened by a FamilySearch Find a Grave index entry; Doris still needs an adult Hendrix record beyond the known 1920 child record.
  • Any primary record explaining the 1904 marriage date printed in Aldermans in America. Until found, the 1899 Brooks County marriage certificate remains the controlling source.

June 14, 2026 continuation check: FamilySearch returned Winnie Ruth Ryall Beaty in the Find a Grave Index, attached to person L2CB-4TH, with birth 14 August 1900, death 17 May 1977, and burial at Pavo, Brooks County, Georgia. That narrows the Winnie adult-trail gap. The same pass found Doris Ryall in the 1920 Barney census with parents J. H. Ryall and Libbie Ryall, but no visible Doris Amy Ryall Hendrix marriage, death, burial, or later household record. John and Libbie's direct death certificate or obituary gaps also remain open.

Research Notes

Discrepancies:

  1. Marriage date: The official marriage certificate is dated October 22, 1899, and the 1900 census confirms the couple married that same year. The Aldermans in America book (1957) lists November 24, 1904, while Geneanet records show September 1899. The certificate date of October 22, 1899, aligns best with the 1900 census evidence. The 1904 date in the book may reflect a church ceremony or records compiled decades after the fact from family recollection.

  2. Mother's birthplace (John's mother Edna): The 1880 census records both of John's parents as Georgia-born. The 1950 census, taken when John was 79 and living with his daughter, records his mother's birthplace as Pennsylvania. The 1950 entry likely reflects a granddaughter's secondhand information about a great-grandparent three generations removed. The 1880 census, taken when John was living in his parents' household, carries stronger evidentiary weight.

  3. Wife's name spelling: The census enumerators recorded different variants of Libbie's name across decades: "Elwin" in 1900, "Levin" in 1910, then consistently "Libbie" from 1920 onward. The Aldermans in America book uses "Lebbie," which appears to be the original family spelling. The marriage certificate and later censuses both use "Libbie," which is the form she evidently preferred in adulthood.

Alderman Family Network:

John H. Ryall married into the large Alderman family through Lebbie Alderman, daughter of Jonathan H. "Doc" Alderman (HH#176). This connects the Ryall household to several other Alderman-linked families documented in this volume: - HH#176: Jonathan H. Alderman (Lebbie's father) - HH#178: George W. Alderman (Lebbie's eldest brother) - HH#180: James Carlton Alderman (Lebbie's cousin) - HH#186: George S. Joyce (Lebbie's sister Lucy Alice Alderman married George Joyce) - HH#177: Isaac McDaniel Turner (Lebbie's sister Nancy Ellen Alderman married Isaac Turner)

The Ryall family itself connects to the broader Morven community through John's father W. R. Ryall, who appears in the 1880 census in that district with five children. The 1880 record places John among six siblings: Isaiah F., William F., Annie E., Hardy V., and Minnie Lee.

Geographic Pattern: The family moved across multiple counties over fifty years: Brooks County (1880-1900) to Berrien County (1910) and back to Brooks County (1920), then Cook County (1930-1956) before the daughters relocated to Florida. John ended his life living between his two daughters: in Lakeland, Florida with Doris Hendrick (1940) and back in Brooks County with Winnie Beatly (1950). He is buried at Sylvester Cemetery, Cook County, Georgia (FindAGrave Memorial 53995333).
