Family Narrative
The photographed George S. Joyce marker reads “AUG. 19, 1873” and “OCT. 2, 1912.” Find a Grave memorial 53836224 places it in Camp Ground Cemetery Mount Zion Church, Morven, Brooks County. The photograph was inspected on September 20, 2026. October 2 fits the illness/probate chronology below; it is a marker-supported death date, not a newly found contemporary death certificate or obituary. The stone's erection date and informant are unknown.
George S. Joyce was born about August 1873 in Georgia. The Barney News column dated September 27 and published September 28, 1912 reports: “We are glad to learn that Mr. George Joyce is improving from a severe illness.” Brooks County temporary letters dated October 7, 1912 already name G. S. Joyce as deceased and appoint G. W. Alderman to care for the estate; permanent letters followed on November 6. These records narrow the previously reported probate upper bound to October 7. They do not give an exact death date, and the newspaper's reporting date is distinct from its publication date. Illness notice, p. 7; temporary letters, p. 32.
George was the son of William Washington Joyce and Henrietta Elizabeth Rountree Joyce of HH#182. The 1880 census places him in their Morven, Brooks County household. He married Lucy Alice Alderman on 30 January 1893 in Brooks County. The 1900 census calls his wife "Susin," but the marriage record, 1910 census, and later widow records show the wife was Lucy Alice Alderman Joyce.
Lucy Alice Alderman Joyce was born 14 October 1874 and died in November 1939 in Brooks County. She was the daughter of Jonathan H. "Doc" Alderman and Amy A. McKinney, book ID 15-2-14, entry 7, in Aldermans in America. After George's death she remained widowed and appears as head of household in 1920 and 1930.
Seven children are documented across census records: William H., Venie/Vinnie A., James C., Letty/Lettie, Dorothy/Dotsie, G. B., and Clyde Joyce. The authenticated FamilySearch re-pass closed or narrowed most of these adult trails. William H. is supported as William Howard Joyce by the 1930, 1940, and 1950 Florida census trail, Florida 1945 state census, and Veterans Administration Master Index entry giving birth 9 October 1896 and death 10 October 1957. James C. is supported as James Clifford Joyce by 1930 Brooks County census continuity, Veterans Administration Master Index, World War I service-card material, and Find a Grave, with birth 7 April 1901 and death 3 June 1957. Vinnie A. has a Social Security Applications/NUMIDENT-style record as mother of W. T. Burton and spouse of Artie L. Burton. Dorothy/Dotsie has a Brooks County marriage to Finnons/Finnons F. Webb in December 1930. G. B. is supported as George B. Joyce by 1940/1950 Brooks County census entries, World War II draft registration, Georgia Death Index, and Find a Grave, with death 23 April 1966. Clyde has 1940/1950 Brooks County census entries, World War II draft/enlistment/discharge records, Georgia Death Index, and Find a Grave, with birth 25 November 1910 and death 22 August 1967. Letty/Lettie has SSDI/NUMIDENT, Georgia Death Index, and Find a Grave-style support under the Joyce surname, but the earlier Maxey newspaper item still lacks a matching marriage certificate in the online pass.
Connections to Other Barney Families
George links HH#186 to HH#182 through his mother Henrietta Rountree Joyce, and to HH#187 through his uncle William F. Rountree. Lucy Alderman links the household to the large Alderman network including HH#176, HH#178, HH#180, and HH#191.
Research Notes
- Seek contemporary death or burial evidence to corroborate the photographed marker's October 2, 1912 date. The September 27 illness report and October 7 temporary appointment fit that date but do not independently state the day of death.
- Venie/Vinnie needs a fuller adult/death trail beyond the W. T. Burton NUMIDENT link if available.
- Letty/Lettie Joyce has later death/burial support under the Joyce surname; the Maxey newspaper marriage notice should remain a separate lead unless a marriage certificate or matching later Maxey record is located.
- Lucy's death-date discrepancy between Aldermans in America and Georgia Death Index should be resolved by image-level death-certificate review.
- Aldermans in America is useful but secondary; use original records first where available.
Online exhaustion update
The June 2026 pass confirmed the core George-Lucy trail and probate/death-index framework. The authenticated FamilySearch re-pass added direct or near-direct adult trails for William Howard Joyce, James Clifford Joyce, Dorothy Joyce Webb, George B. Joyce, and Clyde Joyce, and a partial Vinnie A. Joyce Burton trail through a NUMIDENT child record. Letty's later death/burial trail appears under the Joyce surname; the Maxey marriage notice remains unclosed unless a certificate or later vital record is found. The September 2026 original-record review recovered temporary administration on October 7, 1912, earlier than the November 6 permanent appointment used in this prior summary. The later marker-photo check supplies October 2, 1912 as a marker-supported death date; a contemporary death notice or burial register remains sought. The earlier online-exhaustion claim is withdrawn.
Military Service
The military-service evidence in this household appears in the children's adult trails. William Howard Joyce is supported by Veterans Administration Master Index material. James Clifford Joyce is supported by Veterans Administration Master Index material plus World War I service-card material. Clyde Joyce is supported by World War II draft, Army enlistment, and discharge records. G. B. Joyce has World War II draft-registration support, but draft registration alone should not be treated as proof of service unless a service record is added.
Open Research Questions
- Resolve the open items flagged in Research Notes above with direct records before expanding this household narrative.
Research Status
Previously researched household; probate chronology updated from originals on September 20, 2026. The earlier George-Lucy identity, marriage, census, family-network and child-trail research is retained. This bounded source review does not claim that every online source has been exhausted. Remaining gaps include contemporary corroboration of George's marker date and burial place, Vinnie's fuller death trail, and the unresolved Letty/Lettie-Maxey marriage-certificate question.
