Family Narrative

The head of HH#189 is best identified as Prince Roberts Jr., born about February 1874 in Georgia, son of Prince Roberts Sr. and Lucy Roberts. He appears as Prince Roberts Jr. in the 1880 Brooks County census, as Frank Roberts in the 1900 Barney census, as Prince Roberts in the 1910 and 1920 Barney censuses, as a badly indexed Prince/Pike Roberts in 1930 Hickory Head, and as Prince Roberts in the 1950 Valdosta census. No death record has been located.

The 6 August 1899 Brooks County marriage record names Prince Roberts and Janie Flournoy. This primary record is the strongest proof that the 1900 "Frank" is Prince. The 1900 household has wife Jane and infant son Isaac, consistent with the August 1899 marriage. A June 14, 2026 Ancestry search result also surfaced an Ancestry tree entry for "Prince Frank Roberts" with spouse Hannah Jane "Janie" Flournoy and parents Prince Roberts and Lucy Roberts; that tree is secondary and should not be treated as proof by itself.

Janie Flournoy Roberts was born about 1878-1883 in Georgia and died in December 1957 in Dade County, Florida. Her pre-marriage trail includes a likely 1900 Valdosta census entry as Jane Flornouy, laundress and boarder, and a 1908 Valdosta city directory entry for Janie Flournoy. Her parents remain unresolved; she does not fit cleanly as a child of John and Hannah Flournoy because her reported mother's birthplace is Georgia, while Hannah's is Virginia.

Children documented across the census trail include Isaac/Governor, Mary M., James F., Willie E./Will Everett, Simeon/Simon, and Bessie Mae Roberts. The authenticated FamilySearch re-pass closed the infant Isaac/Governor trail: he appears as Isaac Govoner Roberts in a Georgia death record, died 21 January 1929 in Barney, Brooks County, with parents Janie Flournoy and Prince Roberts and spouse Lola Clark. Adult/death trails for Mary M., James F., Willie E./Will Everett, Simeon/Simon, and Bessie Mae Roberts remain incomplete in the entry.

Connections to Other Barney Families

Prince Roberts Jr. connects to the Prince Roberts Sr. family, which also includes Ike Roberts (HH#61) and Louise Roberts Stroud. His possible relationship to Robert Roberts (HH#184) remains unproved. Janie's Flournoy surname may connect to the HH#179/HH#185 Flournoy network, but her exact parents have not been identified.

Research Notes

  1. Prince Roberts Jr.'s death record and burial remain missing after Georgia/Florida index searches.
  2. Janie Flournoy's parents need a direct record; current evidence proves her maiden name and later life but not parentage.
  3. Adult/death trails are still needed for Mary M., James F., Willie E., Simeon/Simon, and Bessie Mae Roberts. Isaac/Governor is now supported by a 1929 Georgia death record naming both parents and spouse Lola Clark.
  4. The 1910 wife name "Hannah" should be treated as an enumerator/name variant unless a separate wife is proved.
  5. The 1900 Valdosta Jane Flournoy entry is a strong candidate but should remain a likely match unless tied by address, family, or another direct record.
  6. Ancestry trees are secondary only; use them as search leads, not as proof.

Online exhaustion update

The June 2026 pass exhausted available online Georgia/Florida census, death, city-directory, and family-tree leads for Prince Jr.'s death/burial and Janie's parentage. The authenticated FamilySearch re-pass closed Isaac/Governor Roberts through a 1929 Georgia death record naming parents Janie Flournoy and Prince Roberts and spouse Lola Clark. The Frank/Prince identity remains strongly supported by the 1899 marriage and census continuity, but Janie's parents and the remaining child trails remain unclosed.

Open Research Questions

  • Resolve the open items flagged in Research Notes above with direct records before expanding this household narrative.

Research Status

Source-exhausted for available online sources. The Frank/Prince identification is strong through the marriage record and census continuity, and Isaac/Governor Roberts is now directly supported by a parent-naming death record. Prince Jr.'s death/burial, Janie's parentage, and the other child adult trails remain open after online search.
