Family Narrative
Silas George Graham was born about 1871 in North Carolina and died in July 1957. The earliest secure record is the 1880 Whiteville, Columbus County, North Carolina census, where Silas is age 9 in the household of maternal grandfather Ned Baldwin, with parents Isaac Graham and Helen Baldwin present. By 1900 Silas had migrated to Brooks County, Georgia, where he was farming with wife Hannah and four children.
Hannah Baker Graham was born about 1876, with birthplace varying between Florida and Georgia in census records. Social Security Applications and obituary-index material identify her as Hannah Baker, spouse of Silas. No marriage certificate has been located.
The family moved from Brooks County to Valdosta, Lowndes County by 1920. Silas appears there in the 1920, 1930, 1940, and 1950 censuses. By 1950 Hannah was absent and Silas had wife Lorena. The child list spans Eddie/Johnny, Nellie, John, Angie/Arness, Alexander/Amos, Annie Mae, Emanuel, Mary, Willie F., Leola, Blanche, and Jesse/Jessie. Leola's 1934 death record names Silas Graham and Hannah Baker; Blanche's married surname Wilson is supported by Social Security Applications material.
The possible 1870 Isaac Graham in Marion County, South Carolina is geographically plausible because Marion County borders Columbus County, North Carolina, but it is not proved to be Silas's father.
Connections to Other Barney Families
Silas's migration creates a North Carolina-to-Brooks-to-Lowndes County trail. The Baker surname of Hannah may connect to other Baker families in Brooks County, but no direct link to Rubin Baker or other Barney Bakers has been proved.
Research Notes
- Silas and Hannah's marriage record is still needed.
- Hannah's death date and burial need direct records; she is present in 1940 and absent by 1950.
- Adult/death trails are needed for Eddie/Johnny, Nellie, John, Angie/Arness, Alexander/Amos, Annie Mae, Emanuel, Mary, Willie F., Jesse, and Blanche Wilson.
- The 1870 Isaac Graham candidate in Marion County, South Carolina should remain tentative until tied to Helen Baldwin or Silas by a direct record.
- Lorena's maiden name and marriage to Silas need direct proof.
Online exhaustion update
The June 2026 pass exhausted available online indexed sources for the Silas-Hannah marriage, Hannah's death/burial, Lorena's maiden name/marriage, and the remaining child adult trails. Leola and Blanche have parent-naming support, and the long census trail is strong, but the listed gaps remain open because no safe online primary record was found.
Open Research Questions
- Resolve the open items flagged in Research Notes above with direct records before expanding this household narrative.
Research Status
Source-exhausted for available online sources. Silas's core census trail and parentage from the 1880 household are strong. The remaining marriage, Hannah death/burial, Lorena identity, and child adult-trail gaps require offline or newly indexed records.
