Newspaper and Public-Record Trail

This section flags public-record leads separate from the census table. The detailed discussion stays in the family narrative, research status, and source citations below.

1900 Census Household

Name Relation Age Birthplace Occupation
George Ingram Head 49 Georgia Farmer
Mary C Ingram Wife 37 Georgia —
Lingusia Ingram Daughter 20 Georgia —
Simion Ingram Son 17 Georgia —
John H Ingram Son 15 Georgia —
Mary M Ingram Daughter 13 Georgia —
Annie B Ingram Daughter 8 Georgia —
Shellie Ingram Son 2 Georgia —

The original schedule (ED 9, sheet 8B, dwelling/family 161, lines 70–77) gives George a March 1851 birth and age 49. The former “21” was the years-married entry, not his age; Ancestry’s household index separately reads the age as 42. Mary C. is entered as February 1863, age 37, married 21 years, with six children born and five living. The six children’s relationships are to George as head; the count does not establish that all six were Mary’s biological children. The eldest daughter’s indexed name “Lingusia” remains a reading to reconcile with Eugenia in 1880.

George’s Death and Estate

A recorded widow-support petition by Mrs. M. C. Ingram states that Geo. W. Ingram died on December 1, 1903, leaving her and four minor children. The children are not named in that petition. Abel Ingram acknowledged service as administrator on July 1, 1904; separate administration letters name him for George W. Ingram’s estate. Neither document calls Abel George’s brother.

The appraisers’ return of July 16, 1904 sets apart property assessed at $1,843, including 300 acres of lot 364, livestock, farm equipment, produce, $100 cash and household/kitchen furniture. The approval paragraph is completed, but its term/date blanks are unfilled. This is a support award, not an underlying purchase deed or a complete title chain. It must not be confused with the I. B. Ingram estate’s lot 414 sale described in the probate guide.

The Valdosta Times, December 22, 1903, page 3, reprinted an Adel News notice headed “Mr. George Ingram Is Dead.” It reports that George W. Ingram died at home about four miles north of Barney after becoming ill in Quitman, and that the funeral occurred at the family’s old burial ground at Pine Grove Church in Colquitt County. Its wording “Tuesday night of last week” is relative to an undated reprinted report; it does not independently settle the calendar date or resolve the petition’s December 1 entry. No grave-marker identification is established here.

George W.’s Book L final return, dated November 13, 1905, sworn December 31, 1905 and allowed February 5, 1906, records Abel as administrator and transactions with M. C. Ingram. Its voucher dates must not be mistaken for George’s death date. The shared names, widowhood and Barney household sequence support this estate connection, rather than initials alone.

Mary C. / Katie and the Household Sequence

The original Colquitt marriage register names George W. Ingram and Miss Katie Daley in the certificate: license February 11, ceremony February 13, 1879, received February 22. The inspected page is a later register transcription from Book A-1, page 98, recorded May 5, 1905—not a surviving loose 1879 license.

The 1880 original lists G. W. Ingram, 29; Mary C., 20, wife; Eugenia, five months, daughter; and Leah, 80, explicitly his mother. In 1910, Mary C. is a 49-year-old widow at Barney with Simmie O., Mary M., Annie B., Shellie D. and Katie G. listed as her children (ED 21, sheet 12B, dwelling 218/family 219). The 1850 George W. infant in Guilford and Leah’s household remains part of the earlier candidate chain, but its birth timing conflicts with March 1851; that census has no relationship column. Leah’s age and birthplace also differ between 1850 and 1880.

Mrs. M. C. Ingram’s original death certificate records death May 19, 1935, at Barney and burial at Sardis on May 20. It gives birth September 10, 1860, parents D. Dailey of Ireland and Mozelle Lovell of Georgia. That birth date conflicts with the 1900 census, and is reported here as the certificate’s statement, not a resolved correction. Mrs. J. W. Carter is the informant; no relationship is supplied. Later administration letters name Mrs. Belle Carter for Mrs. M. C. Ingram’s estate. Their indexed December 2, 1936 date and earlier January 1936 inventory deadline require reconciliation; the index’s inferred death year is not evidence of a 1936 death. The two Carter names have not been merged here.

Children and Later Trails

This section is reserved for later-life child evidence. No later spouse, death, burial, obituary, probate, separate household, or descendant-line identification has been added here yet from direct records.

Connections to Other Barney Families

Nearby 1900 Ingram households may be collateral relatives, including HH#168 and HH#169, but those connections have not been re-proved in this cleanup. Abel Ingram in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 Guilford Ingram household appears to be George's brother and may help explain part of the nearby Ingram cluster.

Research Notes

  • Reconcile the widow petition’s December 1, 1903 death date with the reprinted notice’s relative wording; locate the original Adel News issue and an independently identified Pine Grove grave. Trace the lot 364 deed history without treating the support award as a purchase deed.
  • Resolve whether Eugenia in 1880 and Lingusia in 1900 are the same daughter, and seek a direct marriage, death, burial, or parent-naming record.
  • Continue targeted searches for John H. Ingram after 1900. Current later John Ingram hits are too weak or point to other parents and places.
  • Prove Georgia/Katie G. Ingram's later life with a direct parent bridge, or keep her adult trail unresolved.
  • Do not use the Tennessee Civil War pension index for Mary Ingram, widow of Washington Ingram, as proof of this family without the pension file or another direct bridge.
  • Do not use the Georgia Ingram Peavy, Sallie Eugenia Ingram Curenton, or 1940 Washington, D.C. records as proved HH#161 evidence.

Research Status

  • Status: Source-Researched / not source-exhausted.
  • Strengths: Original adult censuses, marriage, widow-support petition and administration letters support the household and estate trail. Earlier census age/birthplace conflicts remain visible. Mary C./Katie Dailey's identity rests on the 1870 Dailey household, the 1879 marriage, the widow household sequence, and her 1935 death record. Mary M.'s 1923 death record directly names Geo. Ingram and Kate Daily as parents. Simmie/Simion, Annie B., and Shellie/Shelly have usable adult trails.
  • Remaining cautions: The widow petition directly reports George’s death and the newspaper reports his funeral location, but the date wording and exact grave remain unresolved. Lingusia/Eugenia, John H., and Georgia/Katie G. remain unresolved. Several candidate clusters have been rejected or left as leads because they do not bridge back to George W. Ingram and Mary C./Katie Dailey.
