Family Narrative
- Children in household: Eddie, 15, and Robert, 13
- 1900 census notes: married about 16 years; Martha reported 4 children, 4 living
Phillip Lightsey was a Black farmer whose record trail now rests on a much firmer foundation than the older entry allowed. In 1900 he headed a Barney household with wife Martha and sons Eddie and Robert. By 1910 the family was in Fletcher, Irwin County, still with Eddie and Robert at home. In 1930 Philip was widowed and living in the Mystic household of his son Robert. His death certificate places his death in Irwin County on 27 April 1934.
The biggest correction in this entry is parentage. The older draft relied on Jasper Lightsey's household as the key kinship anchor. The better evidence is the Primus Lightsey household. In 1880 Philip Lightsey, age 32, appears in Quitman, Brooks County, as a son in the household of Primus Lightsey and Sylvia Lightsey. Henry S. Lightsey, age 16, appears there as another son. That record, together with the 1870 Primus Litsey household where Henry is present as a ten-year-old child, makes Henry Lightsey (HH#165) a proven brother of Philip. Jasper Lightsey (HH#126) still appears to belong to the wider Barney Lightsey network, but the records assembled for HH#104 do not by themselves prove the exact relationship.
Martha's identity also required correction. She was not Martha Frazier. The stronger record set shows Martha Roberts in Brooks County before her marriage. In 1870 and 1880 she appears in the household of Ephraim Roberts and Amanda Roberts. Brooks County marriage records then show a license for Philip Lightsey and Martha Roberts dated 10 January 1883 and a marriage date of 11 January 1883. That record replaces the older 1884 theory and resets the spouse identification on direct evidence.
The later records tie the family together cleanly. In 1900 Philip and Martha were in Barney with sons Eddie and Robert, and Martha reported four children born, all then living. In 1910 the family was in Fletcher, Irwin County, where the census again shows Eddie and Robert and reports four children born to Martha, with three then living. The marriage-duration figure in that census does not align cleanly with the 1883 marriage record and should be treated as approximate rather than controlling.
The death certificates strengthen both sides of the household. Philip Lightsey's death certificate names his father as Primus Lightsey and gives his mother's maiden surname as Capers, with both parents reported as South Carolina-born. Robert Lightsey was the informant. Martha Lightsey's death certificate gives her date of death as 28 December 1929 in Ben Hill County, identifies her as Martha Roberts, wife of Philip Lightsey, says she was Virginia-born, and names her father as E. Priam Roberts. Robert Lightsey was again the informant. Together with the 1930 census, these records connect the Brooks County household to the later Irwin County family and confirm that Martha Roberts is the correct spouse.
The children's picture is improved but not complete. Eddie and Robert are secure from the census trail, but two additional children remain unnamed in the current record stack. The 1910 fertility column shows that one of Martha's four children had died by that date.
Connections to Other Barney Families
- Henry Lightsey (HH#165) is a proven brother through the Primus and Sylvia Lightsey household.
- Jasper Lightsey (HH#126) remains likely kin within the Barney Lightsey cluster, but the exact relationship is still unproved here.
- Martha Roberts ties this household into the Black Roberts network of Brooks County through Ephraim Roberts and Amanda Roberts.
- Robert Roberts (HH#184) may connect within that Roberts network, but the degree of kinship is still unproved.
- Octavia Roberts (HH#129) belongs to a separate White Roberts line and should not be blended into Martha's family without direct evidence.
Open Research Questions
- Philip's likely 1870 appearance as Philip Letsey in the household of Charles Letsey is a good lead, but it should remain probable rather than closed until it is tied more directly to the later man.
- The two additional children beyond Eddie and Robert still need identification from later census, death, marriage, or burial records.
- The exact relationship of Jasper Lightsey to Philip and Henry still needs a direct linking record.
- Martha's father is given on her death certificate as E. Priam Roberts; that should be checked against any surviving marriage, probate, or land material for the Roberts family.
Research Status
Well-researched. The household now has a solid evidentiary backbone: the Primus Lightsey household establishes Philip's parentage line and Henry connection, the 1883 marriage record establishes Martha Roberts as the wife, the 1900 and 1910 censuses carry the family from Brooks into Irwin County, and the 1929 and 1934 death certificates tie the later records back to both sides of the household. The main remaining work is in identifying the two additional children, tightening Philip's likely 1870 appearance, and proving exactly how Jasper fits into the broader Lightsey network.
