Family Narrative

Jasper Lightsy headed a Black farming household in Barney in 1900 with his wife Queen and their son Ed. The present evidence places him in south Georgia by 1867, when he registered to vote in Colquitt County, and in Brooks County by 1871, when he married Queen Clark and appeared on the Morven District 660 freedman tax list. The household can be followed with confidence through the 1880, 1900, and 1910 censuses, and Queen appears as Jasper's widow in Brooks County in 1930.

The records do not yet prove Jasper's exact relationship to the Primus, Philip, and Henry Lightsey branch discussed elsewhere in this encyclopedia. He belongs in the same Barney Lightsey cluster by surname, place, and timing, but that kinship remains unproved on the current direct evidence.

Connections to Other Barney Families

  • Queen Clark, Jasper's wife, appears to be the same woman seen in the 1870 Brooks County household of Reuben and Milley Clark, which provides a plausible pre-marriage placement for her before the 22 July 1871 marriage.
  • HH#104 establishes that Philip Lightsey and Henry S. Lightsey belong to the Primus Lightsey household. That evidence should not be extended to Jasper beyond a broader neighborhood and surname connection.
  • The 1871 Morven District 660 tax record placing Jasper alongside Price Lightsey supports Jasper's presence within the wider Lightsey cluster in Brooks County during Reconstruction, but it does not by itself prove a specific kinship tie.

Open Research Questions

  • Jasper's birthplace is not fully settled. The 1880 census reports Georgia, while the 1900 and 1910 censuses report South Carolina.
  • The 1900 wife-name reading "Lucen" in derivative materials is an error. The census image reads Queen, consistent with the 1871 marriage, the 1880 household, the 1910 household, and Queen's 1930 widow household.
  • No additional primary online records were located in the present evidence set for a 1920 census appearance, Jasper's death or burial, Queen's death or burial, or later land records.

Research Status

Source-exhausted online. The core household has a stable direct-record spine from 1867 through 1930, and no further primary online records have been identified in the current review. Jasper's exact kinship to the other Barney Lightsey households remains unproved and should not be overstated.
