Family Narrative

Rubin Baker was born about May 1860 in Georgia and died 20 June 1938 in Brooks County, Georgia. His Georgia death record gives age 61, but that age conflicts with the 1900 census and the rest of the census trail; it should be treated as an informant or index error. His name appears as Rubin, Reuben, and Ruben Baker in different records.

The known online trail places him in several distinct records: a possible 1867 Reconstruction oath in Muscogee County, an 1870 Muscogee County household with wife Rose, an 1880 Hamilton County, Florida household with wife Jane, a Brooks County tax-digest entry, the 1895 Brooks County marriage to Lizzie Flournoy, the 1900-1930 Brooks County census trail, and his 1938 Georgia death record. The Annie Wright marriage and the Nankin-district Ruben Baker remain a caution because more than one Ruben/Rubin Baker lived in Brooks County.

Lizzie Flournoy Baker was born about 1875 and died 14 March 1950 in Brooks County. The 1880 census places a five-year-old Lizzie Flournoy as niece in the Primus and Mary Rhem household in Quitman, Brooks County. Her later Social Security Applications and Claims entry appears under Elizabeth Flintall and names spouse Ruben Baker and child Elizabeth Isom, indicating that she remarried or used a later surname after Rubin's death.

The 1910 and 1920 census trail expands the child list to John W., Buster/Bertie, Charlie, Leila/Lila, Hardy, Ira/Ivory, Marie, Nina, Hattie L., and Elizabeth. A renewed FamilySearch pass closed part of the child-trail problem: Hardy Baker has a Brooks County marriage to Ruth English on 23 September 1920 and World War I draft-registration hits; Marie Baker has a Brooks County marriage to Preston Stevens on 13 June 1920, matching the later Stevens-grandchild pattern around Lizzie's household. Hattie L. Baker remains with Lizzie through the 1930 and 1940 Barney census records. Nina remains with Lizzie in 1930 and 1940, with grandsons identified as Stivens/Stevens and Preston Stevens. Adult trails for Bertie/Buster, Annie, Leila/Lila, Ira/Ivory, and some later children remain incomplete.

Connections to Other Barney Families

Lizzie's Flournoy surname connects this household to the Brooks County Flournoy network documented in HH#179 and HH#185, but her exact parent within that network is not proved. Her 1880 placement as niece of Primus and Mary Rhem also creates a Rhem-Flournoy question that has not been closed.

Research Notes

  1. Lizzie's parentage and the Rhem-Flournoy relationship need a direct record; current evidence proves the surname and 1880 placement but not her parents.
  2. John Baker's biological father remains unknown; he is explicitly Rubin's stepson in 1900.
  3. Adult or death trails are still needed for Bertie/Buster, Annie, Leila/Lila, Ira/Ivory, Nina, Hattie, and Elizabeth Baker/Isom. Hardy Baker and Marie Baker now have Brooks County marriage records, but death/burial trails remain preferred.
  4. The Nankin-district Ruben Baker with wife Julia/possible Annie Wright must remain separated unless a direct source ties that man to this household.
  5. If only secondary tree material appears for a child trail, use it as a lead only and state that no primary record has been located.

Online exhaustion update

The June 2026 source pass exhausted the available online Ancestry/FamilySearch-indexed trail without safely closing Lizzie's parentage, John Baker's biological father, or the adult/death trails for Bertie/Buster, Annie, Leila/Lila, Ira/Ivory, Nina, Hattie, and Elizabeth Baker/Isom. The authenticated FamilySearch re-pass added Hardy Baker's 1920 Brooks County marriage to Ruth English and WWI draft trail, and Marie Baker's 1920 Brooks County marriage to Preston Stevens. Elizabeth Baker/Isom is supported through Social Security Applications material under Lizzie's later Elizabeth Flintall identity, but the other child trails remain unclosed. Secondary tree material was not used as proof.

Research Status

Source-exhausted for available online sources. Rubin and Lizzie's core identity, marriage, census trail, and death records are supported by primary or indexed primary sources. The remaining child-level, Lizzie-parentage, and Rubin-origin gaps remain open because no safe online primary or reliable secondary continuation was located.
