Newspaper and Public-Record Trail

This section flags public-record leads separate from the census table. The detailed discussion stays in the family narrative, research status, and source citations below.

1900 Census Household

Name Relation Age Birthplace Occupation
Lillie McCoy Head 16 Georgia Dressmaker
Mary Studstill Boarder 24 Georgia Dressmaker

Children and Later Trails

No children are listed in this household in the 1900 census table.

The 1900 household is unusual because Lillie was recorded as a married sixteen-year-old head of household with no husband present. The surviving local source extracts now support the older identification of this woman as Lollie/Lottie Chambers McCoy: FamilySearch marriage-index extracts for Joseph McCoy and Lollie/Lottie Chambers give a Brooks County marriage on 11 March 1900, and the 1910 census places Joe W. McCoy and Lollie McCoy together in Barney with children Georgie, Oma L., Clara B., Gordon, Talmage, and Howard. The marriage date and the 1910 census marriage-duration statement should still be handled cautiously, because the 1910 index says the couple had been married eleven years, while the indexed marriage date is March 1900.

Lillie/Lollie’s parentage is supported by the FamilySearch death-index extract for Mrs. J. W. McCoy, wife of Joseph William McCoy. It records her death on 17 December 1928 in District 637, Thomas County, Georgia, age forty-four, born Georgia, certificate #34540, and lists James Chambers and Nettie Webb as other people on the record. That supports the connection to James G. Chambers of HH#198. A saved FamilySearch image-page screenshot exists for the death certificate, but the OCR is imperfect; the indexed extract is currently the clearer local source.

Joseph William McCoy’s identity is now stronger than in the older entry. FamilySearch and Ancestry extracts give a 1 February 1883 birth date, with the WWI draft registration placing the birth in Brooks County, Georgia and naming Lollie McCoy as spouse in the Ancestry extract. The 1900 Ancestry census extract places Joe McCoy, born February 1883, as a son in John and Hester McCoy’s household, and the FamilySearch NUMIDENT extract names Joseph William McCoy’s parents as John B. McCoy and Hester A. Strickland. This gives direct support for the HH#117 John Buck McCoy and HH#32 William M. C. McCoy cross-volume line, though the HH#117/HH#32 entries should remain the main place for the full parentage chain.

There were no children in Lillie’s 1900 household. The child trails belong to the continuing Joe and Lollie/Katie McCoy family documented in later records. The 1910 census records Joe and Lollie with six children. The 1920 census records Joe W. and wife Katie, likely the same woman under a variant or indexing problem, with Belle, Gordon, Talmage, Howard, Rosie, Agnis, and Herman. By 1930, after Lollie’s 1928 death, Joe appears with wife Mary, son Herman, daughter Rosa M., son Carden/Gordon, and Manning stepchildren or household children. In 1940, Joe W. McCoy is in George B. and Clara Hunt’s Brooks County household as father-in-law, with Stella McCoy also present. In 1950, widowed Joseph W. McCoy is in St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, Florida, as father of Arthur H. McCoy. A Florida death-index extract records Joseph W. McCoy’s death in Pinellas County in February 1965, certificate #10042.

Continuing family / child trails

Child or lead Evidence currently in the trail Status
Georgie / Belle McCoy Georgie appears in the 1910 Joe/Lollie household, age 10. The prior 1928 Patt/Patt Jenkins lead resolves to Agnes McCoy, not Georgie/Belle. A separate 1916 Georgie Mae McCoy/Watt Jenkins marriage and 1920/1930/1940 Georgia Jenkins census chain in Colquitt County is a strong candidate trail, but the visible extracts reviewed so far do not name her parents. The 1920 Joe W. McCoy household’s “Belle” should not automatically be treated as Georgie; she may be Clara Belle or another name-form issue pending original-image review. No direct record supports a Georgie C. Richardson identity. Strengthened candidate trail; not fully closed until parent-naming/original-image or death/obituary proof is reviewed.
Oma L. / Oma Lee McCoy Jones Oma L. appears in 1910, age 8. FamilySearch marriage extraction records Oma Lee McCoy marrying Calvin Jones in Brooks County on 20 November 1919, and a NUMIDENT child-link extract names Oma L. McCoy as spouse of Calvin Jones and mother of William Claude/William C. Jones. Strengthened adult trail; Oma Lee's own death record still needed.
Clara B. McCoy Hunt Clara B. appears in 1910, age 6. A FamilySearch marriage extract records Clara Belle McCoy marrying George B. Hunt in Colquitt County on 5 July 1924. The 1940 Brooks County census places Joe W. McCoy as father-in-law in George B. Hunt’s household with Clara Hunt, and later NUMIDENT/obituary-linked child extracts support the Clara Belle McCoy/George B. Hunt family cluster. Strong adult trail; Clara's own death/obit still needed.
John Gordon / Carden McCoy Gordon appears in 1910 and Gorden appears in 1920. The 1930 extract lists Carden McCoy, age 24, in Joe’s household, likely the same son under a name/index variant. FamilySearch extracts now continue him as Gordon/John G. McCoy in 1940/1950 with Trudie/Trudy Cone McCoy and support death/burial through death-index, NUMIDENT-style, and Find A Grave index records. This man should not be merged with the unrelated military record for Gordon H. McCoy born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Strong adult trail; direct death certificate needed because the extracted death evidence conflicts between May 1951 and May 1952.
Talmage McCoy Appears in 1910 and 1920. A 2026-06-09 FamilySearch search pass found possible W. T., Robert T., Lee T., and muster-roll leads, but none was parent-linked to Joe and Lollie. The 1919 muster-roll lead is suspicious because HH#166 Talmage was only about 10–12 then. Open; adult identity not currently closeable.
Howard / William Howard McCoy Howard appears in 1910 and 1920. A FamilySearch marriage extract records Wm Howard Mc Coy, age 25, son of Lollie McCoy and Joe W. McCoy, marrying Oleta Rogers at Berlin, Colquitt County, Georgia, on 14 March 1934. Browser-backed FamilySearch follow-up found NUMIDENT child-link records naming William H. McCoy with wife Nina/Oleta Rogers and children Patricia Ann Bennett and Remer/Reamer Joe McCoy. A focused 2026-06-09 public/newspaper search found no proof-level death/obit/burial hit. Strengthened adult-family continuation; Howard's own death/obituary still open.
Rosa / Rosie M. McCoy Glow Rosie appears in 1920 and Rosa M. appears in Joe’s 1930 household. A FamilySearch marriage extract records Rosa Mae McCoy, age 24, daughter of Lollie McCoy and J. W. McCoy, marrying Colbert Glow in District 1151, Colquitt County, on 22 December 1934. A focused 2026-06-09 public/newspaper search found no proof-level later census/death/obit/burial hit. Strengthened adult trail; later census/death still open.
Agnes / Agnis McCoy Jenkins Agnis appears as a daughter in 1920, age 6. A FamilySearch marriage extract records Agnes McCoy, age 18, daughter of Lollie McCoy and Joe McCoy, marrying Patt Jenkins in District 1151, Colquitt County, on 2 September 1928. A focused 2026-06-09 public/newspaper search found no proof-level later census/death/obit/burial hit. Strengthened; later census/death still open; the older A. H. McCoy/Fay Lewis groom lead is not used for this daughter and should be treated cautiously.
Arthur Herman McCoy Herman appears as a young son in 1920 and 1930. A FamilySearch WWII draft-registration extract identifies Arthur Herman McCoy, born 26 February 1914 in Brooks County, and the 1950 census places Joseph W. McCoy in Arthur H. McCoy’s St. Petersburg household as father. Browser-backed FamilySearch follow-up extracted NUMIDENT 6KSB-Q311VV73-2DH for Arthur Herman Mccoy, born 06 Feb 1914, died 9 Nov 1972 in Pinellas County, Florida, certificate #76029. Strong adult trail with index-level death evidence; parent/spouse-naming death certificate or obituary still needed.

Mary Studstill remains unresolved. The 1900 boarder was about 24 and born in Georgia. Candidate review rejects Mrs. Mary S. Studstill, born about 1845, as too old; Mary E. Studstill in Wilcox County and Mollie Studstill in Berrien County are age-compatible but not tied directly to Brooks/Barney or to McCoy/Chambers records. Lollie Chambers McCoy's sister Vesta Chambers later married/lived with Hugh Studstill in Valdosta, but that is contextual only and too late to identify the 1900 boarder. Mary should be treated as an associated boarder, not as a proven relative of Lillie or Joseph.

Connections to Other Barney Families

  • HH#198 James G. Chambers: supported by the death-index extract for Mrs. J. W. McCoy, which names James Chambers and Nettie Webb on the record.
  • HH#117 John Buck McCoy and HH#32 William M. C. McCoy: strengthened by the 1900 census extract placing Joe McCoy as son of John and Hester McCoy and the NUMIDENT extract naming Joseph William McCoy’s parents as John B. McCoy and Hester A. Strickland. Full chain proof should remain cross-referenced with HH#117/HH#32.

Research Notes

  • Pull or preserve a clearer 1900 census image/extract for the Lillie McCoy and Mary Studstill household, because the surname parsing is central to the identification.
  • Pull the original Brooks County marriage image for Lollie/Lottie Chambers and Joseph McCoy; current support is from FamilySearch indexed extracts.
  • Pull full census image extracts for 1910, 1920, 1930, 1940, and 1950 to confirm household member order, neighbor context, child counts, and the Lollie/Katie name issue.
  • Preserve a readable original image for Lollie C. Chambers McCoy’s 1928 Thomas County death certificate; current support is strongest from the FamilySearch indexed extract, with an imperfect image-page screenshot also saved.
  • Pull direct adult records for Georgie/Belle if new leads appear. The 1928 Patt/Patt Jenkins marriage belongs to Agnes McCoy, and the Richardson lead remains unsupported; the separate 1916 Georgie Mae McCoy/Watt Jenkins + 1920/1930/1940 Georgia Jenkins chain is a strong candidate but still needs parent-naming/original-image support or death/obituary proof before being treated as closed. Pull direct adult records for Talmage, Howard later death/obituary, Rosa Mae later census/death, Agnes later census/death, richer Arthur Herman death/obit proof, Oma Lee's own death record, Clara Hunt's own death/obit, and a direct Gordon/Carden death certificate to resolve the May 1951/May 1952 conflict before treating the child set as complete. Public obituary searches on 2026-06-09 did not return proof-level hits for Howard/Oleta, Rosa Mae/Colbert Glow, Agnes/Patt Jenkins, Arthur Herman/St. Petersburg, or Clara/George B. Hunt; after the browser restart, FamilySearch browser-backed checks did add Arthur index-level death evidence and Howard child-link continuation evidence.
  • Preserve Mary Studstill as an associated boarder only. Current candidate review did not find a proof-level identity or McCoy/Chambers relationship; revisit only if new Brooks/Barney Studstill evidence appears.
  • Do not treat FamilySearch tree attachments, Ancestry hints, or public-tree snippets as direct evidence. They are leads only.

Open Research Questions

  • Resolve the open items flagged in Research Notes above with direct records before expanding this household narrative.

Research Status

  • Status: Source-Researched, not Source-Exhausted.
  • Strengths: The marriage-index, death-index, census, WWI draft, NUMIDENT, and Florida death-index extracts now give a coherent Lollie/Lottie Chambers McCoy and Joseph William McCoy framework; Joseph’s parentage is directly strengthened; Howard, Rosa Mae, Agnes, Oma Lee, Clara, Gordon/Carden, and Arthur Herman have new adult-record support.
  • Remaining cautions: The 1900 Lillie McCoy household still needs a clean image extract; Mary Studstill is unresolved; Georgie/Belle remains open with the 1928 Jenkins lead rejected as Agnes, the Richardson lead unsupported, and the separate 1916 Georgie Mae McCoy/Watt Jenkins trail treated only as a strong candidate until parent-naming/original-image or death/obituary proof is found; Talmage is documented as not currently closeable from available candidate searches; Oma Lee, Clara, Gordon/Carden, Howard, Rosa Mae, and Agnes still need later death/obituary or conflict-resolution work; Arthur Herman now has index-level death evidence but still needs a richer obituary or parent/spouse-naming death certificate if available; the 1920 Katie/Lollie name issue should remain visible; original images are still preferable where only indexed extracts were saved.
