Family Narrative
- Head: Thomas Lightsy, also indexed as Thomas Lightey in one 1900 census entry. He was age 56, born Dec 1843 in Georgia, widowed, and working as a farmer. The census reports both parents born in South Carolina. He rented his farm in 1900.
Core record chain:
- 1874 Brooks County marriage: Thomas Litsey married Elizabeth Florney on 20 Jul 1874. The record is from Georgia marriage records, Ancestry record
183273, image40951_294515-00458. - 1880 census, Quitman, Brooks County: Thomas Lightsey, age 39, wife Elizabeth, age 27, and children Paul H., James R., Martha J., and Lucy.
- 1880 agricultural schedule: Thomas Lightsey appears in District 4, Brooks County, enumerated 8 Jul 1880, page 36, line 1.
- 1890 Georgia property tax digest: Thomas Lightsey, Black, Morven District 660, Brooks County, with land value reported at $200.
-
1900 census, Barney, Brooks County: Thomas Lightsy, widowed, with children Martha, Clarice, John W., and Minnie.
-
Spouse:
Elizabeth Florney married Thomas in 1874 and appears as Elizabeth Lightsey in the 1880 census. She had died before the 1900 census, where Thomas is listed as widowed. The surname Florney may be a spelling variant of Flournoy, but the broader claim that Elizabeth belonged to a specific Flournoy sibling group has not been proven in this pass. No source found here identifies her parents.
Children with direct evidence:
- Paul H. Lightsey, age 7 in the 1880 census. No confirmed post-1880 trace was found.
- James R. Lightsey, age 6 in the 1880 census. No confirmed post-1880 trace was found.
- Martha or Martha J. Lightsey, age 3 in 1880 and age 23 in 1900. This is almost certainly the same daughter, but no confirmed marriage, death, or later census trail was found.
- Lucy Lightsey, age 5 months in 1880. She married George Wright in Brooks County on 30 Sep 1896 and appears as Lucy Wright in HH#13 in 1900.
- Clarice Lightsey, age 17 in the 1900 household. No confirmed pre-1900 or post-1900 trace was found.
- John W. Lightsey, age 15 in the 1900 household. No confirmed pre-1900 or post-1900 trace was found.
- Minnie Lightsey, age 10 in the 1900 household. No confirmed post-1900 trace was found.
Probable but unproven child or kinship leads:
- Ella Betts, wife of William Betts in HH#10, is a strong candidate for a Lightsey daughter or close relative. The main evidence is that Charley Lightsey is listed in the William Betts household as brother-in-law. No independent record found in this pass names Ella as Ella Lightsey or identifies Thomas and Elizabeth as her parents.
- Charley Lightsey, age 12 in HH#10, is probably connected to the same Lightsey family and may be Ella's brother. The evidence does not yet prove that he was Thomas's son.
HH#13 Wright connection:
This connection is proven. Lucy Lightsey from the 1880 Thomas and Elizabeth Lightsey household married George Wright in 1896. In 1900, George and Lucy Wright live immediately after Thomas Lightsy's household, with children Allice and Thomas Wright. Lucy's age and birth month in 1900 fit the Lucy Lightsey listed as five months old in 1880.
HH#10 Betts connection:
The Betts connection is a strong lead, not a proved child line. Charley Lightsey's relationship as brother-in-law to William Betts points to a Lightsey connection through Ella Betts, but no separate marriage or vital record has been found to confirm Ella's maiden name or Charley's parents.
HH#185 Flournoy connection:
The 1874 marriage record gives Elizabeth's surname as Florney. This may be Flournoy, but the current source trail does not prove her relationship to Pollie Flournoy or any specific HH#185 family group.
Connections to Other Barney Families
- HH#12 to HH#13 George Wright: Lucy Lightsey of this household is securely identified as the Lucy Wright who appears in HH#13 after her 1896 marriage to George Wright.
- HH#12 to HH#10 William Betts: Ella Betts and Charley Lightsey in HH#10 appear connected to this Lightsey household, but the exact relationships remain unproved.
Research Notes
- 1870 census: targeted searches for Thomas Lightsey, Lightsy, and Litsey born about 1843 in Georgia did not produce a plausible Brooks County match.
- 1910 census: no clear Brooks County continuation for Thomas was found. A possible-looking out-of-state result in Cumberland County, New Jersey had the wrong birthplace pattern and was rejected.
- Death records: no direct Thomas or Elizabeth death certificate was confirmed.
- Cemetery and FindAGrave searches: no accepted Thomas or Elizabeth Lightsey/Lightsy memorial was found in the available online pass.
- Betts marriage and vital searches: no independent William Betts and Ella Lightsey marriage or later vital record was found.
- Child tracking after 1900: no source-quality later matches were found for Paul H., James R., Martha, Clarice, John W., Minnie, Ella, or Charley that could be tied securely back to HH#12.
Open Research Questions
- Parentage audit: confirm both parents of the household head for HH#12 through direct or near-direct records where possible; mark derivative-only parent links as unresolved until supported.
- Child census audit: confirm every child named in the 1900 household against later census, marriage, death, obituary, cemetery, probate, or draft records; separate proven child links from same-name candidates.
- Other household member audit: verify boarders, servants, in-laws, stepchildren, grandchildren, and unrelated residents in HH#12; document the exact relationship instead of assuming kinship.
- Spouse and marriage audit: locate marriage records, death records, divorce records, or later census records for spouses or absent spouses tied to this household.
- Direct image review: re-check the 1900 census image and any cited index-only sources before treating ages, relationships, birthplaces, or name spellings as final.
Research Status
- Status: Source-exhausted for current online evidence, not complete.
- Strengths: 1874 marriage, 1880 household, agricultural schedule, 1890 tax digest, 1900 widowed household, and Lucy Lightsey to George Wright connection.
- Remaining cautions: Betts and Flournoy links remain leads; death, burial, and most post-1900 child trails are still unresolved.
