Family Narrative
- 1900 Barney household: Thomas H. Hawkins, age 55, born Aug 1844 in Georgia, was the head of household in Barney, Brooks County, Georgia, working as a carpenter. His wife Julia, age 42, was born in North Carolina. Their household included sons James, 18, and Benjiman, 14, daughter Lillie, 5, and Julia's mother Clara Ragan, 62. The census shows that Thomas and Julia had been married about nine years, pointing to an 1891 marriage year, and that Thomas's parents were both reported as born in North Carolina.
- Likely continuation after 1900: The strongest post-1900 chain now runs through a Duval County, Florida marriage record and two later census households. A user-supplied Duval County marriage record shows Henry Hawkins and Julia Leslie licensed on 17 Oct 1891 and married on 18 Oct 1891. The date matches the 1900 Barney census marriage fields almost exactly. In 1910, a Turner County, Georgia household shows Henry T. Hawkins, 64, with wife Julia and daughter Lillian; the age progression, wife's name, daughter's name, and parental-birth pattern fit the 1900 Barney family well. In 1920, Thomas Hawkins, 76, appears in Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida, with wife Julia. Taken together, these records make it likely that the 1900 Barney household, the 1910 Turner household, and the 1920 Jacksonville household represent the same family, even though the husband's name shifts between Thomas and Henry in the record trail.
- Julia's likely natal family: Julia appears tied to the Ragan or Regan family. In 1900 her mother Clara Ragan was in the Hawkins household. An 1860 Wilcox County, Georgia census shows Julia E. Ragans, age 4, in the household of Timothy S. Ragans and Clara J. Ragans. An 1870 Columbus County, North Carolina census shows Julia Regan, 13, with Clancy J. Regan and siblings Robert A., James R., Sarah E., and Wesley J. The name forms vary, but the age pattern, North Carolina birthplace, and the reappearance of Clara Ragan in 1900 make this a strong working reconstruction.
- Ragan sibling cluster: The same reconstruction likely extends to Robert A. Ragan or Regan, James R. Ragan, Wesley J. Ragan, and Sarah E. Ragan, later Sarah E. Green. The Florida and Georgia follow-forward records for those siblings fit the 1870 household reasonably well, but this part of the family remains less secure than the core 1900-1920 Hawkins chain.
- Same-name deconfliction, Henry Hawkins with Lydia Story: The 1870 Worth County Henry Hawkins household with wife Lidda and child William, and the 1880 Worth County Henry T. Hawkins household with wife Lydia A. and children William A. and Susan A., should not be merged into HH#47 on current evidence. That line is supported by an 1867 Dooly County marriage index for H. T. Hawkins and L. A. Story, by Lydia's Find a Grave memorial naming her first husband as Henry T. "Jack" Hawkins, and by Lydia's death certificate, which names her as Susan A. Hawkins Leonard and identifies her as a Story by birth. The child set, spouse identity, occupation pattern, and the 1880 report that Henry's mother was born in South Carolina all point away from the Barney household.
- Same-name deconfliction, Wellborn or Suwannee Thomas Henry Hawkins: The Wellborn, Florida burial trail also appears to belong to a different man. The headstone application for Thomas Henry Hawkins, born 3 Feb 1845 and died 29 Nov 1919, places him at Little River near Wellborn, Florida, and ties him to a Florida Confederate unit. That record fits the separate Suwannee County line with wife Sarah J., not the Barney household with wife Julia.
- 1909 Florida newspaper lead: A user-supplied page from The Florida Star dated 2 Jul 1909 appears to correspond to the previously indexed Julia Hawkins or Ragan thank-you-card notice. Because the page has not yet been fully transcribed, it is best treated as a lead that supports the family's Florida orbit rather than as a fully extracted proof item.
- Early Thomas Hawkins lead: A user-supplied 1850 Dooly County census image shows a Thomas Hawkins, age 5, in the household of Benjamin and Malissa Hawkins. The age is compatible with the HH#47 Thomas H. Hawkins, but no direct bridge has yet been found, so this remains a lead rather than a settled identification.
Connections to Other Barney Families
- No direct connection to another numbered Barney household is proved in the present evidence.
Research Notes
- The 1900, 1910, and 1920 records together make a persuasive continuation chain, but the identity is not yet closed by a death certificate, obituary, probate file, or another explicit bridge that names the same man across the Thomas and Henry forms.
- Julia's maiden-name bridge is strong at the marriage record level, but her later-life death record has not yet been added. A death certificate, obituary, or probate item naming her as Julia Leslie or Julia Ragan would tighten the case further.
- The Ragan or Regan sibling reconstruction is useful and probably right, but it still rests on a mix of census continuity and later index-level follow-forward work. It should remain provisional until more image-level or vital-record support is added.
- The 1909 Florida Star thank-you-card item still needs a full transcription.
- The 1850 Thomas Hawkins in the Benjamin and Malissa Hawkins household remains only a possible early-life lead.
- Negative search result worth preserving: no Brooks County Find a Grave memorial has yet been found for the HH#47 Hawkins household.
Open Research Questions
- Parentage audit: confirm both parents of the household head for HH#47 through direct or near-direct records where possible; mark derivative-only parent links as unresolved until supported.
- Child census audit: confirm every child named in the 1900 household against later census, marriage, death, obituary, cemetery, probate, or draft records; separate proven child links from same-name candidates.
- Other household member audit: verify boarders, servants, in-laws, stepchildren, grandchildren, and unrelated residents in HH#47; document the exact relationship instead of assuming kinship.
- Spouse and marriage audit: locate marriage records, death records, divorce records, or later census records for spouses or absent spouses tied to this household.
- Direct image review: re-check the 1900 census image and any cited index-only sources before treating ages, relationships, birthplaces, or name spellings as final.
Research Status
- Status: Substantially upgraded, but not source-exhausted.
- Strengths: The 1900 Barney household is well anchored, the 1891 Duval marriage record matches the census marriage signal closely, the 1910 Turner and 1920 Jacksonville households fit the same family well, and the major same-name collisions have been sorted more carefully than before.
- Remaining cautions: The husband's Thomas/Henry name variation still needs a terminal proof item, Julia's later-life record set remains thin, and the wider Ragan kin reconstruction should stay marked as provisional.
