Newspaper and Public-Record Trail
This section flags public-record leads separate from the census table. The detailed discussion stays in the family narrative, research status, and source citations below.
- 1904 social notice: A 14 Feb 1904 Savannah Morning News Quitman column reported that Mrs. J. B. Hall and her little daughter, of Barney, were visiting relatives in Eatonton. That fits Lula S. Collingsworth Hall's Eatonton/Putnam County family background and confirms the John B. Hall household's Barney residence after the 1900 census.

Children and Later Trails
Later records support the daughter’s identity beyond the 1900 census. Sarah C. Hall appears as Sarah Hall in 1910 and Caroline Hall in 1920, 1930, and 1940. A preserved Brooks County marriage record identifies her as Sarah Caroline Hall when she married Zack Taylor Williams in 1945.
Family Narrative
- Head: John B. Hall, recorded in 1900 as J. B. Hall, age 36, born Oct 1863 in Georgia, working in a saw mill
- Wife: Lula S. Hall, age 36 in 1900, born in Georgia
-
Child: Sarah C. Hall, age 1 in 1900, born about 1899 in Georgia
-
The 1900 census places J. B. Hall in Barney, Brooks County, Georgia, on sheet 3, dwelling 46, family 46, with wife Lula S. Hall and daughter Sarah C. Hall. That record states that John and Lula had been married about three years, that John was born in Oct 1863 in Georgia, and that he worked in a saw mill.
- The Hall household remains in Barney through the next four federal censuses. In 1910, John B. Hall and Lula S. Hall appear in Barney with daughter Sarah Hall. In 1920, J. B. Hall and Lula Hall appear there with daughter Caroline Hall. In 1930, John B. Hall and Lula C. Hall remain in Brooks County with daughter Caroline Hall. In 1940, J. B. Hall, then widowed, was still living in Barney with daughter Caroline Hall, and the census reports that he had also lived in Barney in 1935.
- The daughter line is consistent across these records. The child recorded as Sarah C. Hall in 1900 is recorded as Sarah Hall in 1910 and as Caroline Hall in 1920, 1930, and 1940. The preserved Brooks County marriage record for Sarah Caroline Hall and Zack Taylor Williams on 22 Nov 1945 provides the direct bridge to the 1946 obituary survivor Mrs. Z. T. Williams of Barney.
- The earlier Hall identification is also well anchored. In 1880, J. Bryon Hall, age 17, appears in Township 6, Fairfield County, South Carolina, explicitly identified as the son of John F. Hall and Sarah P. Hall. A likely earlier 1870 Fairfield County census entry for Byron Hall, age 8, fits the same household line. This creates a possible bridge to HH#1, but it should remain unresolved unless the John F. Hall of the 1880 South Carolina household can be proved to be the same man as the John P. Hall recorded in the 1900 Barney census, or unless the 1900 middle initial is shown to be an enumerator error.
- John B. Hall and Lula S. Collingsworth were licensed to marry in Bibb County, Georgia, on 13 Jun 1896, were married on 18 Jun 1896 by J. W. Roberts, M.G., and the marriage was recorded on 23 Jun 1896. A notice in the Macon Telegraph dated 21 Jun 1896 reported that the wedding took place in Atlanta at the residence or parsonage of Dr. J. W. Roberts of Trinity Church and described Lula as a popular school teacher from Eatonton.
- A 1904 Savannah Morning News Quitman social column gives a useful small bridge between the Barney household and Lula's Eatonton background: it says Mrs. J. B. Hall and her little daughter, of Barney, were in Eatonton visiting relatives. The item does not name Lula or Sarah Caroline directly, but it fits the 1900 household and the known Eatonton Collingsworth line.
- Lula's earlier family placement is supported by both the 1870 and 1880 censuses in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia. In 1870, Loula S. Colinsworth, age 5, appears in the household of Thos. Colinsworth and Sarah C. Colinsworth. In 1880, L. S. Collinsworth, age 16, is explicitly identified as their daughter in the household of T. M. Collinsworth and S. C. Collinsworth. A Georgia marriage index entry showing Thomas M. Collingsworth and Sarah Mattox married in Morgan County in 1855 fits that parental line.
- Lula Hall's 1930 Georgia death certificate shows that Mrs. J. B. Hall died 11 May 1930 in Valdosta, Lowndes County, Georgia, at age 66 years, 2 months, and 26 days. The certificate identifies her as a married white female, born in Georgia, wife of J. B. Hall, daughter of Thomas M. Collingsworth and Sarah C. Maddox, resident of Barney, Georgia, and buried at Camp Ground, Brooks County, Georgia. The informant appears to be J. B. Hall of Barney.
- John B. Hall's 1946 obituary in the Valdosta Daily Times identifies him as an 82-year-old well-known Barney resident whose funeral was held at Camp Ground Methodist Church. The obituary describes him as a farmer, longtime rural letter carrier, and former South Georgia Railroad conductor. It names as survivors daughter Mrs. Z. T. Williams of Barney, brother W. N. Hall of Boston, Georgia, and sisters Mrs. R. L. Lacy and Mrs. W. W. Avera of St. Petersburg, Florida.
- That railroad-conductor obituary makes John B. Hall a strong candidate for the 14 Oct 1899 Valdosta Times reference to conductor "J. F. Hall" on the South Georgia Railroad. The match is not confirmed because the 1899 initials differ, but the age, railroad, and Barney/Adel setting fit John B. Hall better than the older John P./John F. Hall lead in HH#1.
- A Georgia Death Index entry for John B. Hall records his death on 17 Apr 1946 in Brooks County, Georgia, at age 82 and gives certificate number 6941. That index entry matches the obituary date and age.
- FindAGrave memorials for John Byron Hall and Lula S. Collingsworth Hall agree with the reported death dates, spouse pairing, and Camp Ground burial tradition. Those memorials are useful supporting evidence, but they remain derivative.
Connections to Other Barney Families
- HH#1 John P./John F. Hall lead: Possible connection only. The 1880 census explicitly identifies J. Bryon Hall as the son of John F. Hall and Sarah P. Hall, but the 1900 Barney census currently reads HH#1 as John P. Hall with wife Martha. That could still be reconciled through an initial error and a later spouse, but the present evidence does not prove the bridge.
Research Notes
- No death certificate for John B. Hall has been found. The current death evidence therefore rests on the Georgia Death Index entry and the 1946 obituary, which align on date, age, and place.
- The preserved daughter bridge is now supported by an image-level Brooks County marriage record for Sarah Caroline Hall and Zack Taylor Williams, but the entry would still benefit from a fuller citation or cleaner archival copy if one is later available.
- The 1920 census reports John B. Hall's birthplace as South Carolina, while other later records in this chain generally point to Georgia. Given the stable household, spouse, daughter, age range, and location, this reads as a single-record inconsistency rather than a break in identity.
- Collinsworth appears in preserved records with several spellings, including Colinsworth, Collinsworth, and Collingsworth. The variation should be treated as normal record-level surname drift, not as evidence of separate families.
- A prior reading in this project treated Lula's burial as Sunset Hill in Valdosta, but the death certificate image itself reads Camp Ground, Brooks County. The Camp Ground reading should control unless a stronger contrary record appears.
- An Ancestry military entry for Thomas Collingsworth currently carries conflicting Union-coded indexing fields and should remain only a misindex lead until the original card and unit context are verified.
Open Research Questions
- Parentage audit: confirm both parents of the household head for HH#46 through direct or near-direct records where possible; mark derivative-only parent links as unresolved until supported.
- Child census audit: confirm every child named in the 1900 household against later census, marriage, death, obituary, cemetery, probate, or draft records; separate proven child links from same-name candidates.
- Other household member audit: verify boarders, servants, in-laws, stepchildren, grandchildren, and unrelated residents in HH#46; document the exact relationship instead of assuming kinship.
- Spouse and marriage audit: locate marriage records, death records, divorce records, or later census records for spouses or absent spouses tied to this household.
- Direct image review: re-check the 1900 census image and any cited index-only sources before treating ages, relationships, birthplaces, or name spellings as final.
Research Status
- Status: Well-supported household with a strong multi-record identity chain. The possible Hall-family connection to HH#1 remains unresolved.
- Strengths: The entry now preserves a six-decade census chain for John Byron Hall, direct parent-child anchoring in the 1880 Hall household, direct marriage evidence for John B. Hall and Lula S. Collingsworth, solid parental placement for Lula through 1870 and 1880 censuses plus her death certificate, and a clear survivor bridge from daughter Sarah Caroline Hall to Mrs. Z. T. Williams.
- Remaining cautions: No death certificate for John B. Hall has been found, so the death case currently rests on the aligned death-index and obituary evidence. The connection to HH#1 is not proven, and fuller archival citation detail for the Sarah Caroline Hall–Zack Taylor Williams marriage record would also be useful if later available.
