Family Narrative
-
Census page: 2 | Lines: 44-50
-
Head: Henry Spell, age 32 in 1900, born July 1867 in Georgia, merchant, owning his home free of mortgage.
- Wife: Emma Spell, age 23, born in Georgia.
- Children in the 1900 household: Minnie Spell, Annie Spell, Hattie Spell, Lina Spell, and May Bell Spell.
- Two-marriage reconstruction: The preserved record set supports a Brooks County marriage for Henry Spell and Hattie Burton on 1 Oct 1885 and a later Brooks County marriage for H. B. Spell and Emma Smith on 16 Nov 1897. That timing explains the 1900 household structure better than the earlier entry did.
- Emma Smith identification: Emma is well supported through the 1880 Dixon Smith household, the 1897 marriage record, the 1921 Dixon Smith notice naming Mrs. Henry Spell as a daughter, her 1931 death certificate, and her 31 Aug 1931 obituary.
- Later Henry trail: The current file set supports Henry or H. B. Spell in 1908, 1910, 1920, and 1930 records, showing continuity from Barney into Berrien and Lowndes County.
- Parentage caution: The 1870 Henry Spell and 1880 W. H. B. Spell entries in the John C. Spell household are possible earlier records for this Henry Spell, but they do not by themselves prove parentage. They should be treated as candidate childhood placements, not as closed proof.
- Child-mother caution: The ages of Minnie, Annie, and Hattie fit the first marriage to Hattie Burton, but the present file set still does not contain a separate direct record naming Hattie Burton as mother of those three girls.
Research Notes
- No preserved direct bridge explicitly identifies Henry B. Spell, husband of Hattie Burton and Emma Smith, as the same son of John C. Spell and Martha C. Spell.
- Broader church, cemetery, and older Spell-family background remains partly inherited from prior materials rather than re-extracted in this pass.
- No accepted Brooks County FindAGrave memorial for Henry Spell was located in the May 2026 online check.
Open Research Questions
- Parentage audit: confirm both parents of the household head for HH#20 through direct or near-direct records where possible; mark derivative-only parent links as unresolved until supported.
- Child census audit: confirm every child named in the 1900 household against later census, marriage, death, obituary, cemetery, probate, or draft records; separate proven child links from same-name candidates.
- Other household member audit: verify boarders, servants, in-laws, stepchildren, grandchildren, and unrelated residents in HH#20; document the exact relationship instead of assuming kinship.
- Spouse and marriage audit: locate marriage records, death records, divorce records, or later census records for spouses or absent spouses tied to this household.
- Direct image review: re-check the 1900 census image and any cited index-only sources before treating ages, relationships, birthplaces, or name spellings as final.
Research Status
- Status: Substantially strengthened, but parentage remains unresolved.
- Strengths: Documented 1885 and 1897 marriages, strong 1900-1931 Henry/Emma trail, and solid Emma Smith identification.
- Remaining cautions: Do not use 1880 W. H. B. Spell as proof of parentage, and do not overstate the mother-child proof for the older daughters.
