Family Narrative
- Census page: 2 | Lines: 35-38
- Head: Isham Jones Pounds, age 27 in 1900, born 28 Dec 1872 in Georgia; identified in later records as a native of Valdosta, Lowndes County, Georgia
- Death: 22 Sep 1964, St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, Florida; buried at Royal Palm South Cemetery
- Parents: James Dix Pounds (1843-1875) and Mary Ann Bradford Pounds (1846-1875)
- Earlier family research identifies Mary Ann Bradford as part of the Bradford family network also seen elsewhere in the Barney study, including HH#37.
-
Prior research also reports an 8 Feb 1876 guardianship by Shadrach Bradford for the Pounds orphans, but that record is not currently available for direct review and should be treated as an unavailable-source limitation rather than a fresh gap.
-
First wife: Cora Ella Roundtree Pounds, born 24 Apr 1873, died 14 Apr 1910
- Seen as Cora E. Roundtree, age 6, in the 1880 household of James W. Roundtree and Anna J. Roundtree in Folsom, Lowndes County, Georgia.
- Married Isham Pounds on 5 Mar 1895 in Lowndes County, Georgia. The county marriage certificate image is now on file.
-
Burial evidence now in hand places her at Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery, Hahira, Lowndes County, Georgia.
-
Second wife: Frances "Fannie" C. Horton Pounds, born 10 Mar 1888, died 19 Oct 1968
- Married Isham Pounds on 5 Aug 1911 in Lowndes County, Georgia. The county marriage certificate image is now on file.
-
Later records place her in St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, Florida. Her obituary and memorial both support burial at Royal Palm South Cemetery.
-
Children documented in the records now assembled:
- By the first marriage: Anna Estelle Pounds, Carl Minor Pounds, Nora M. Pounds, Charlie Isham Pounds, James T. Pounds, and William Wadeford Pounds.
- By the second marriage: James Horton Pounds, Jones LaVern Pounds, Wilson Francis Pounds Sr., Wilbur Owen Pounds, and a younger son recorded as La Coy/Lacey Pounds in later census records.
Life course and work: - 1900: locomotive engineer in Barney, Brooks County, Georgia, with wife Cora and children Anna Estelle and Carl Minor in the household. - 1910: widowed brick mason in Valdosta, Lowndes County, Georgia, with Estelle, Carl Minor, Charlie, and Wadford in the home. - 1918: registered for the First World War draft in Polk County, Florida; residence Nichols, Polk County; nearest relative Mrs. F. Pounds. - 1920: bricklayer in a phosphate mine at Bartow, Polk County, Florida. - 1930: grocery store proprietor in St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, Florida. - 1935: still in Pinellas County, Florida, with Fannie and younger sons in the household. - 1940: gardener in St. Petersburg, with home ownership reported. - 1950: still at 3524 Tangerine Avenue in St. Petersburg; listed as a proprietor-worker and marked unable to work.
Notes on evidence and interpretation: - The entry is now supported by a much stronger record set than the earlier draft, including the 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930, 1935, 1940, and 1950 censuses, Isham's 1918 draft card, his 1964 obituary, Fannie's 1968 obituary, memorial evidence for both wives, and county marriage certificate images for both marriages. - The best burial documentation now in hand for Cora and Fannie comes from obituary and memorial evidence. No stronger cemetery-register copy is currently available in this file set. - Earlier wording that treated Find a Grave as negative for this family is obsolete.
Connections to Other Barney Families
- Possible Bradford-family link to HH#37 Thomas Nichols: Mary Ann Bradford appears to belong to the same broader Bradford family network also discussed in HH#37, but the exact relationship has not yet been proved through direct records.
Open Research Questions
- Parentage audit: confirm both parents of the household head for HH#18 through direct or near-direct records where possible; mark derivative-only parent links as unresolved until supported.
- Child census audit: confirm every child named in the 1900 household against later census, marriage, death, obituary, cemetery, probate, or draft records; separate proven child links from same-name candidates.
- Other household member audit: verify boarders, servants, in-laws, stepchildren, grandchildren, and unrelated residents in HH#18; document the exact relationship instead of assuming kinship.
- Spouse and marriage audit: locate marriage records, death records, divorce records, or later census records for spouses or absent spouses tied to this household.
- Direct image review: re-check the 1900 census image and any cited index-only sources before treating ages, relationships, birthplaces, or name spellings as final.
Research Status
- Status: substantially strengthened and updated with direct record evidence through 1950, obituary evidence, and marriage certificate images.
