Family Narrative
Georgia was born around April 1871. Her parents, William M. Tyler and Jane V. Tyler, were both Georgia natives. The family lived in Valdosta, Lowndes County, Georgia in 1880, where ten-year-old Georgia appeared as the eldest daughter alongside siblings Ella E. (age 7), Hausford W. (age 4), and Charles M. (age 2). She is a direct link to HH#4, the William Martin Tyler household.
By her first marriage she became Georgia Terry. The husband's first name is unknown, and he died sometime between 1896 and 1900, leaving her widowed with three young daughters. She remarried on January 19, 1905, in Orange County, Florida, to Melvin C. Sligh. That second marriage certificate identifies her as "Georgie R. Terry" — the bridge document connecting the Tyler, Terry, and Sligh surnames.

Children:
-
Mable Terry, born May 1889 in Florida. She appears as "Lila V. Terry" (age 17) in the 1910 census. The obituary identifies a "Mrs. B. E. Ewing" of Orlando as a daughter, which is likely Mable or Lelia's married name.
- Lelia Terry, born 1892 in Florida. She may be the "Mrs. Edward Houstoun" of Orlando named in the obituary.
- Jessie Terry, born August 1895 in Alabama. Appears as "Jesse Terry" (age 14) in 1910.
- Clarence M. Sligh, born around 1907 in Florida. Appears in 1910 (age 3), 1930 Tampa (age 23), and 1940 Ocoee (age 33). Named as a survivor in the 1965 obituary, still living in Ocoee.
The obituary also names a sister, Mrs. Ada Pike of Miami, confirming at least one additional Tyler sibling beyond those recorded in 1880.
Migration path: Georgia (1880, as a child) to Florida (by 1889) to Alabama (by 1895) to Barney, Brooks County, Georgia (1900) to Arcadia, DeSoto County, Florida (1910) to Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida (1930) to Ocoee, Orange County, Florida (1935 through 1950s).
Census records: - 1880: Daughter in William M. Tyler household, Valdosta, Lowndes County, Georgia. Age 10, born Georgia. - 1900: Head of household in Barney, Brooks County, Georgia. Age 29, born Texas, widowed, occupation uncertain (possibly milliner). Three daughters, all living. Boarder B.H. Legg, a railroad agent. - 1910: Georgia R. Sligh, Arcadia, DeSoto County, Florida. Head, widowed for the second time, running a boarding house. Four children born, four living. Household includes Lila V. Terry (17), Jesse Terry (14), Clarence Sligh (3), and boarder Jones Strond (23). - 1930: Georgia R. Sligh, Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida. Head, widowed, homemaker. Living at 503 South Oregon Avenue, renting for $20/month, owns a radio set. Son Clarence M. (23) in household. This census reports both parents born in Georgia, correcting the Texas entries from earlier records. - 1940: Georgia Sligh, Ocoee, Orange County, Florida. Head, widowed, owns home valued at $800. Eighth grade education. Son Clarence (33) still with her. Lodger Martha Bickley (25) also present. - 1950: Georgia R. Stigh (census spelling variation), Ocoee, Orange County, Florida. Head, widowed, keeping house at 16 McKey Street, apartment 16. Age 79.
Birthplace inconsistency: Georgia reported Texas in the 1900, 1910, 1940, and 1950 censuses, but Georgia in the 1880 and 1930 records. The 1880 entry, taken while she was a child in her parents' household, is probably the correct one. Her parents are consistently listed as Georgia natives.
Vital records: - Marriage certificate: Georgia R. Terry to Melvin C. Sligh, January 19, 1905, Orange County, Florida. - Death: Georgia Rebecca Sligh died Saturday, May 22, 1965, in Ocoee, Florida. Age 94. Funeral held Monday, May 24, at Loomis Funeral Home chapel, Winter Garden, officiated by Rev. Don Reynolds. Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Gotha, Orange County. - Obituary survivors: daughters Mrs. B. E. Ewing and Mrs. Edward Houstoun (both of Orlando), son Clarence M. Sligh (Ocoee), sister Mrs. Ada Pike (Miami), 13 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren. - FindAGrave memorial 115052591, Woodlawn Memorial Park, Gotha, Orange County, Florida. Open Research Questions
- Parentage audit: confirm both parents of the household head for HH#6 through direct or near-direct records where possible; mark derivative-only parent links as unresolved until supported.
- Child census audit: confirm every child named in the 1900 household against later census, marriage, death, obituary, cemetery, probate, or draft records; separate proven child links from same-name candidates.
- Other household member audit: verify boarders, servants, in-laws, stepchildren, grandchildren, and unrelated residents in HH#6; document the exact relationship instead of assuming kinship.
- Spouse and marriage audit: locate marriage records, death records, divorce records, or later census records for spouses or absent spouses tied to this household.
- Direct image review: re-check the 1900 census image and any cited index-only sources before treating ages, relationships, birthplaces, or name spellings as final.
Research Status
- Status: Verified across all available census records (1880-1950), marriage certificate, death index, obituary, and burial record. Sources exhausted.
Next research paths: identify which daughter married into the Ewing family and which into the Houstoun family through Orange County marriage records; trace Clarence M. Sligh's later life; investigate B.H. Legg, the 1900 railroad agent boarder, for potential ties to other Brooks County households.
