Household #4: Tyler, William Martin
Back to the 1900 Census & Household Index
In the 1900 Barney census, William Tyler headed a 3-person household. The table below preserves the exact names, relationships, ages, birthplaces, and occupations recorded for the household.
Household Snapshot
The census records a 3-person household with 1 spouse or marital partner and 1 child.
The head's listed work was Merchant; that gives this page its occupational context without repeating the census table below.
All listed household members were reported as born in Georgia, which keeps the census snapshot local unless later records show otherwise.

Family Narrative
-
FamilySearch ID: L2DS-L5K
-
Head: William Tyler, age 58 in 1900, born May 1847 in Georgia, merchant.
- Wife: Jane Virginia Tyler, age 54 in 1900, born Dec 1845 in Georgia. The census name has been misread in some transcriptions, but the broader record trail supports Jane Virginia Tyler.
- Child in the 1900 household: Ida Tyler, age 11, born Sep 1888 in Georgia.
- Identity chain: The preserved trail supports the same William Martin Tyler across the 1870, 1880, 1900, and later Florida records. The strongest direct identifiers are the Lowndes County census chain, Jane Virginia's death record, William's 1942 death certificate, and the FamilySearch profile already tied to this household.
- Birth-year caution: The surviving records do not speak with one voice. The 1900 census points to May 1847, the 1870 census implies about 1846, and the 1942 death certificate gives 13 May 1845. The identity is still strong, but the exact birth year should remain presented as a conflict rather than a settled fact.
- Marriage and later life: The record set supports Jane Virginia Griffin as William's long-term wife and supports a later marriage to Martha Cornelia Jernigan after Jane's death in 1914.
- Civil War service: The preserved military and pension references support William's service in Company E, 1st Georgia Reserves. Earlier claims tying him to other units should remain secondary to that record trail.
- Children: The current entry directly supports Georgia R., Ella E., Hansford W., Charles M., and Ida Tyler through the cited census and death-record trail. Ida remains the only child actually in the 1900 Barney household.
Military Service
The current local record set supports treating William Martin Tyler as a Confederate veteran, with service in Company E, 1st Georgia Reserves. Because older notes appear to have attached him to conflicting units, the Company E, 1st Georgia Reserves trail should remain the primary military identification until the full pension and service-file wording is transcribed.
Connections to Other Barney Families
- HH#6 Georgia Rebecca Tyler (Terry/Sligh): Direct connection. Georgia Rebecca Tyler is William Martin Tyler's daughter and appears as HH#6.
Research Notes
- Ida Tyler's life after the 1900 household remains thin in the current local record set.
- The exact wording and full citation set for William's military and pension records should be preserved more precisely in a later pass.
- Some longer child-forward claims in older drafts still depend partly on compiled-tree tradition rather than fresh extract preservation here.
Open Research Questions
- Parentage audit: confirm both parents of the household head for HH#4 through direct or near-direct records where possible; mark derivative-only parent links as unresolved until supported.
- Child census audit: confirm every child named in the 1900 household against later census, marriage, death, obituary, cemetery, probate, or draft records; separate proven child links from same-name candidates.
- Other household member audit: verify boarders, servants, in-laws, stepchildren, grandchildren, and unrelated residents in HH#4; document the exact relationship instead of assuming kinship.
- Spouse and marriage audit: locate marriage records, death records, divorce records, or later census records for spouses or absent spouses tied to this household.
- Direct image review: re-check the 1900 census image and any cited index-only sources before treating ages, relationships, birthplaces, or name spellings as final.
Research Status
- Status: Source-exhausted for the core household identification.
- Strengths: Strong census chain, direct death-record support, clear wife identification, and a direct link to HH#6.
- Remaining cautions: Exact birth-year reconciliation, full military citation cleanup, and some child-forward detail still need a tighter extract set.
