Joel Gornto → William Blair Gornto Sr.
Vital-record supported. The 1927 death certificate names Joel Gornto and Mary Blair as William Sr.’s parents. The reported 1826 arrival remains later family testimony.
Hannah Gornto and the Hall household
Hannah Elizabeth Gornto, daughter of Joel Gornto and Mary Blair, married Enoch Hall in Brooks County on November 23, 1865. Their son Sion L. Hall appears in their 1870 household and is named as their son in 1880. He later became a Barney merchant, justice of the peace, and the town’s strongly supported first mayor.
Sion married Malpha Westberry in 1889. The Hall family account follows her strong-probable relationship to Emerson Westberry, the mail carrier associated with councilman W. E. Westbury. This is a marriage connection to the Gornto descendants, not an additional Gornto descent line.
Evidence grades
- Census- or vital-record supported: recent parent-child steps are named or placed in compatible households by census, marriage, death, or comparable records.
- Secondary-supported: a compiled genealogy supplies one or more early generations while local records independently establish the people involved.
- Strong probable: the relationship is well supported, but one part of the settler claim still lacks direct settlement-era proof.
Each generation is judged separately. Marriage, surname, proximity, or a shared household does not by itself establish descent.

The documented core is Joel Gornto and Mary Blair through their children Hannah Elizabeth Gornto Hall and William Blair Gornto Sr. Hannah’s son Sion L. Hall headed Barney household #7. William Sr. and his son William Jr. headed households #15 and #14.
Nathan Gornto’s administration of Joel’s estate proves association, not fatherhood. No inspected record names Nathan as Joel’s father. Martha Jane Gornto Dean and Emma Gornto Pace are verified Gornto-born Barney residents, but their parents remain unresolved.
Mary Blair’s proposed parents were early settler William Blair and his reported wife Mary Joyce. That link remains secondary-supported and probable. The earliest explicit parentage statement located is an unsourced 1999 compiled genealogy, and later accounts are not demonstrably independent. Original records identify Joel’s wife as Mary Blair; none inspected gives her the middle name Joyce.
