Joel Gornto (about 1806–1860)

Joel Gornto was an antebellum Lowndes County resident whose family later reached Barney. The records do not establish that Joel himself lived at the future townsite.

What the records show

A Lowndes County militia return dated September 21, 1836 names Joel Gornto as second lieutenant of the 659th District. The return proves his county presence and militia office. It does not by itself prove active service in the Creek War.

Joel's probate papers establish that he made his will on October 20, 1860 and died later that month. The papers name Mary as his wife and identify land in Lot 274. Mary and Nathan Gornto administered the estate with the will annexed. Their administrative roles do not establish Nathan as Joel's father.

A later obituary for Joel's daughter Hannah Hall says the family moved to Lowndes County in 1826. No contemporary record found in this research confirms that year, so it remains secondary-supported. Joel must also be kept separate from the twentieth-century Joel C. Gornto.

Connection to Barney

The later William Blair Gornto families appear in Barney's census and community record. The proposed line from Joel to those households is well supported in its later generations but still lacks a fully inspected parent-naming record at the first generation. Joel therefore has a qualified descendant connection, not a proved personal role at Barney.

Evidence status

  • Verified: Lowndes County militia office in 1836; October 1860 will and probate facts.
  • Secondary-supported: arrival in Lowndes County in 1826.
  • Qualified: descendant connection to the William Blair Gornto households at Barney.
  • Unresolved: Joel's parents, a direct Barney role, and parts of the estate land and acreage record.
