George Alderman (about 1797–after 1880)

Back to the Early History Profiles index

Identity and arrival

This page concerns the older George Alderman who lived with Nancy Carlton Alderman and remained in the Lowndes and Brooks County area. He must be kept separate from the younger George Alderman, husband of Mary “Polly” Newton, who moved to Bradford County, Florida.

The older George was a regional resident by 1830. His exact arrival year is unknown. Folks Huxford's later roster gives 1829, while Aldermans in America has been summarized as 1826 or 1827. No contemporary arrival record located in this research settles the difference.[1][2]

Census and family

The 1850 Lowndes County census places George, about 53, and Nancy, about 47, with a household that included Jonathan H. Alderman. In 1880, George, age 85, and Nancy, age 75, lived in Jonathan's Brooks County household. The schedule identifies them as Jonathan's father and mother.[3][4]

That 1880 relationship field directly establishes George and Nancy as Jonathan's parents. George's relationship to William Alderman is strong probable from the 1850 household reconstruction and compiled family material, but no reviewed probate or other parent-naming record states it.[2][3]

Brooks County land records

The original Brooks County deed indexes contain five entries for George Alderman:

  1. Daniel J. McLeod to George Alderman, warranty deed, Book A, page 239; instrument dated December 6, 1854; 490 acres in Land Lot 210, District 9.
  2. Samuel Moore to George Alderman, warranty deed, Book A, page 241; instrument dated June 24, 1850; 245 acres in Land Lot 59, District 15.
  3. George Alderman to William Alderman, warranty deed, Book C, page 786; instrument dated November 21, 1859; six acres in Land Lot 491, District 9.
  4. George Alderman to John Blair, warranty deed, Book D, page 92; instrument dated August 4, 1873; 220 acres in Land Lot 57, District 15.
  5. George Alderman to Amy Alderman, warranty deed, Book E, page 444; instrument dated October 9, 1878; 194 acres in Land Lot 490, District 9.[5][6]

These are deed-index entries, not the recorded deeds. They do not supply complete boundaries, consideration, residence statements, witnesses, reservations, or family relationships. Amy Alderman cannot be identified from the index entry alone.

Connection to Barney

The six-acre conveyance in District 9 Land Lot 491 places George in the north-of-Barney land cluster later associated with the Folsom and Alderman families. Together with compiled family evidence placing his farm about four miles north of Barney, the deed strengthens the local connection. It does not prove that George lived on those six acres or owned land inside the later town.[2][5]

Public offices and namesakes

Huxford's office lists and other local references name a George Alderman, but the two men overlap in the regional record. The younger George has previously been associated with the tax-collector entry. No public office should be assigned to the older George without a record that distinguishes him by age, spouse, residence, or land.

Death and estate

Compiled sources give February 14, 1797, and April 11, 1882, as George's birth and death dates. No contemporary death record, probate entry, Bible image, obituary, or photographed marker was inspected for this page. The 1880 census proves only that he was living when the household was enumerated.[4]
