Household Members
Louis Raintree (age 46, b. ~1854) - Race: Black - Marital Status: Single (in 1900) - Occupation: Sawmill laborer - Parents: Both Georgia-born - Research Status: Found — Brooks County tax digest, 1910 Census in Duval County, Florida (as "Lewis Roundtree," widowed boarder), and three marriage records located - Note: Name variant "Raintree/Rountree" has caused confusion with HH#187 William F. Rountree. However, William F. Rountree (HH#187) is documented as White (Folsom-Rountree-Joyce family), while Louis Raintree is Black. Despite similar birth years (~1854) and Brooks County location, they belong to separate family lines.
Robert Nelms (age 24, b. ~1876) - Race: Black - Marital Status: Single (in 1900) - Occupation: Sawmill laborer - Parents: Both Georgia-born - Research Status: Found — Brooks County marriage records (1923 to Corinne Kelly, 1930 to Bertha Griffin) provide strong local ties; 1910 Census in Chattanooga, Tennessee with wife Ruth located as well - Note: The Brooks County marriages suggest roots in this area, consistent with his presence in the 1900 Barney Precinct census.
Moses Baldwin (age 17, b. March 1883) - Race: Black - Marital Status: Single (in 1900) - Occupation: Sawmill laborer - Parents: Both Georgia-born - Research Status: Found — confirmed in same census district (1571, Brooks County); FamilySearch Family Tree person (LB9X-54S); married Monah Richardson in Florida - Note: Birth record shows March 1883, which aligns with his age 17 in the June 1900 census.
Abe Gardner (age 21, b. April 1879) - Race: Black - Marital Status: Single (in 1900) - Occupation: Sawmill laborer - Parents: Both Georgia-born - Research Status: Found — name variant "Abram" confirmed through marriage record and 1880 census - Marriage: Abram Gardner married Cora Rountree on January 6, 1901, in Brooks County, Georgia - 1880 Census: Abram (10/12 months old in June 1880) appears in Thomas Gardner's household in Starkville, Lee County, Georgia. Parents listed as Thomas Gardner (age 45) and Hannah Gardner (age 40), both Georgia-born. - Note: The 1880 census birth calculation (July 1879) aligns with the 1900 census birth month of April 1879. Abe and Abram are the same person. This man married into the Rountree family seven months after appearing in the Barney census.
Harry Thomas (age 19) - Race: Black - Marital Status: Single (in 1900) - Occupation: Sawmill laborer - Parents: Both Georgia-born - Research Status: Found — census record confirmed via FamilySearch ARK (M3FG-L5S); no Family Tree connection; no subsequent records located - Note: Thomas is a common surname, and this individual has not been traced beyond the 1900 census. He appears to have been a transient sawmill worker without deep roots in Brooks County.
William Wood (age 22, b. ~1878) - Race: Black - Marital Status: Single (in 1900) - Occupation: Sawmill laborer - Parents: Both Georgia-born - Research Status: Not found — name too common for database filtering (19,987 search results on FamilySearch); birthplace confirmed as Georgia per the 1900 census (not Tennessee, as initially indexed by some search engines) - Note: Wood is one of the most common English surnames, and the absence of additional identifying information (parents' names, specific birth month) has prevented further research.
Andrew Gates (age 18, b. April 1882) - Race: Black - Marital Status: Single (in 1900) - Occupation: Sawmill laborer - Parents: Both Georgia-born - Research Status: Found — census record confirmed via FamilySearch ARK (M3FG-L57); no Family Tree connection; no subsequent records located - Note: Like Harry Thomas, Andrew Gates has not been traced beyond the 1900 census. He was 18; Moses Baldwin was younger at 17.
Clayton Davis (age 22, b. ~1878) - Race: Black - Marital Status: Single (in 1900) - Occupation: Sawmill laborer - Parents: Both Georgia-born - Research Status: Not found — name too common for database filtering (19,790 search results on FamilySearch) - Note: Davis, like Wood, is an extremely common surname that has prevented effective database searches without additional identifying details.

- A post-1900 direct record for Floyd Hines under Hines/Hinds/Hynes variants.
- Direct death, burial, marriage, or later census records for Harry Thomas, Andrew Gates, William Wood, and Clayton Davis.
- Better proof for William Wood and Clayton Davis, whose names are too common to separate from unrelated Georgia men without parents, spouse, employer, or county continuity.
- Additional source tying Louis Raintree/Roundtree's tax and 1910 Florida trail to the 1900 Barney worker, beyond name, age, race, and regional fit.
- Direct adult trail for Moses Baldwin after the Florida marriage to Monah Richardson.
June 14, 2026 continuation check: A targeted FamilySearch search for Floyd Hines, Black, born about 1840-1850 in Georgia, returned the 1900 Barney census record and one possible 1870 Dougherty County, Georgia Floyd Hines born about 1842. The 1870 record is only a candidate lead because it does not provide a Brooks County, family, occupation, or later-record bridge to the 1900 Barney sawmill worker. No direct post-1900 record for Floyd, Harry Thomas, Andrew Gates, William Wood, Clayton Davis, or Moses Baldwin appeared in the visible results.
Notes
- This household represents the industrial labor pattern common in post-Reconstruction South Georgia. Sawmill operations in Brooks County recruited Black men who lived in group quarters near the worksite.
- The relationship entries are Head for Floyd Hines and Partner for the other eight residents.
- Floyd Hines was 55; the other residents ranged from 17 to 46. His designation as head does not establish that he was a foreman.
- Abe Gardner's subsequent marriage to Cora Rountree in January 1901 places him in Brooks County less than a year after the census enumeration. The marriage to a local woman suggests some degree of community connection despite his apparent status as a sawmill laborer.
- The five men who have not been traced beyond 1900 (Floyd Hines, Harry Thomas, Andrew Gates, William Wood, Clayton Davis) may have moved on to other sawmill operations, which were common throughout South Georgia and North Florida during this period. Sawmill labor was highly mobile, and workers frequently relocated as operations opened and closed.
- The Louis Raintree vs. William Rountree distinction is worth noting. Despite similar names, ages, and locations, these two men belong to different racial communities in Brooks County. Louis Raintree is Black; William F. Rountree (HH#187) is White and belongs to the Folsom-Rountree-Joyce family network.
