Family Narrative

  • Georgia Williams was a widowed Black woman in Barney in 1900.
  • She appears again in the same community in 1910 as George A. Williams and in Homer McCall's household in 1920 and 1930 as George Ann Williams or George Williams.
  • The records consistently place her with McCall grandchildren, but the exact parent-child link between Georgia Williams and that McCall group has not been proved.
  • An 1880 Milledgeville household with Ben Williams, wife Georgia, and daughter Anna is a plausible earlier match, but the identification is not secure enough to treat as settled.

The clearest part of this household is the Brooks County census trail. In 1900 Georgia Williams, age forty-nine, born May 1851, was the widowed head of household in Barney and worked as a farmer. The household included McCall grandchildren. In 1910 she appears in Barney again as George A. Williams, still female and still living with McCall grandchildren. In 1920 she was recorded as George Ann Williams, age seventy-two, in the household of Homer McCall, where her relationship was given as grandmother. In 1930 Homer McCall's household still included George Williams, age eighty, again identified as grandmother. She was not found in Homer's household in 1940, and no death or burial record has been located.

The later McCall lines are much better documented than the bridge back to Georgia. Homer McCall can be followed forward through his 1912 Brooks County marriage to Rachel Yerby and later records. Milton or Melton McCall can be followed through his World War I draft registration, his 1921 Brooks County marriage to Lavina Harrison, later censuses, and his 1968 death record. Ila Lee McCall can be followed from Georgia Williams's household into her 1915 Brooks County marriage to Joshua Jenkins, then through the 1920, 1930, 1940, and 1950 censuses, with a Brooks County death index entry in 1972. Those records make the McCall grandchild cluster credible, even though the missing parent link remains unresolved.

The older lead in Baldwin County should be handled carefully. In 1880 a Ben Williams household on Washington Street in Milledgeville included Ben Williams, age thirty-three, wife Georgia, age twenty-nine, and daughter Anna, age three. That record may represent the same woman later found in Barney, but the fit is not clean. The age and birthplace details do not line up neatly with the later Brooks County records, so the 1880 household is best treated as a possible earlier identification rather than a proved one.

Connections to Other Barney Families

  • Homer McCall appears to have been one of the McCall grandchildren in Georgia Williams's orbit and later headed the household in which George Ann Williams lived in 1920 and 1930.
  • Milton or Melton McCall and Ila Lee McCall Jenkins appear to belong to the same McCall sibling group associated with Georgia Williams in Barney.

Open Research Questions

  • The exact child of Georgia Williams who was parent to the McCall grandchildren has not been identified.
  • No direct record has been found proving that the 1880 Ben Williams-Georgia Williams-Anna Williams household in Milledgeville was the same family later found in Brooks County.
  • No death certificate, burial record, or other end-of-life record has been found for Georgia Williams or George Ann Williams.

Research Status

WELL-RESEARCHED. The Brooks County record trail from 1900 through 1930 is strong, and the later lines of Homer McCall, Milton or Melton McCall, and Ila Lee McCall Jenkins are well anchored. The main unresolved issue is the missing parent link between Georgia Williams and the McCall grandchildren, along with the unproved 1880 Baldwin County identification.
