Family Narrative

  • The 1900 Barney household contains Jerry Castleberry, wife Georgia Ann Castleberry, their five children Nancy, Joseph William, Idella, John, and Ivy, and Georgia's mother Nancy Norman.
  • Georgia Ann Castleberry's 1931 death certificate names her parents as John Norman and Nancy Alderman Norman, which gives this household a direct Alderman connection on Georgia's maternal line.
  • Later records support adult identifications for at least five children from the 1900 home: Nancy Castleberry Alderman, William Joseph Castleberry, Martha Idella "Della" Castleberry Crosby, John Jerry Castleberry, and Ivey Dewey Castleberry.
  • Jerry's own parentage is still not proved to the same standard as Georgia's Norman-Alderman line, so that point should remain open.

Jerry Castleberry appears in the 1900 census as a thirty-nine-year-old Georgia farmer renting his place in Barney. He reported that he could not read or write. Georgia Ann, born in June 1864, could read and write, had borne five children, and reported that all five were living. The household also included Nancy Norman, age sixty-three, listed as mother-in-law, which provides the bridge from the Castleberry household back into the earlier Norman family records.

The marriage record places Jerry Castleberry and Georgia Ann Norman in Brooks County on 27 December 1887. That document anchors the couple before the 1900 census and fits the ages of the older children in the household. Jerry's later burial and memorial material support identifying him as Jeremiah Bryant Castleberry, born 28 March 1859 and buried at Sardis Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery after his death on 10 May 1907. The burial material is useful support, but Jerry's death still would benefit from a direct certificate or other primary death record if one can be located.

Georgia's side of the family is now much firmer than it was in the earlier version of this entry. In 1870, Georgeann Norman appears in Colquitt County in the household of John Norman and wife Nancy Norman. In 1880, the same family appears again in Colquitt County with daughter Georgia A. Norman in the home, while the wife is indexed as Rutha Norman. That 1880 given name should be treated as a record or indexing problem rather than silently normalized away, but the husband, county, daughter, and age pattern make it a strong match to the same family. Georgia Ann Castleberry's 18 April 1931 Colquitt County death certificate then names her father as John Norman and her mother as Nancy Alderman Norman. Taken together, those records support the conclusion that Georgia Ann Norman Castleberry was the daughter of John Norman and Nancy Alderman Norman.

That death certificate is the strongest direct evidence for the Alderman connection in this household. It identifies Georgia with the Norman family through her father and the Alderman family through her mother. The 1900 household therefore includes a documented maternal Alderman line. Earlier claims about founding dynasties or inherited status go beyond the evidence.

The children's later records are now strong enough to update the household in a meaningful way. Nancy Castleberry married Jim Alderman in Colquitt County on 26 December 1909. Later memorial material supports identifying that husband as James Harrison Alderman and connects the couple to daughter Ruby Alderman Ralston Moore. At the same time, Hugh James Alderman should be kept separate; his wife was Nancy White, and he should not be merged with Nancy Castleberry's husband. A 1910 census entry that appears to show a very young Nancy A. Alderman is questionable for this daughter and should not be treated as firm proof without better image review.

William Joseph Castleberry is well documented from young adulthood through death. His World War I draft registration gives his birth as 3 March 1891, residence near Omega in Colquitt County, and occupation as farming. Military service material places him in Company E, 45th Infantry, with service extending into March 1919. Later records carry him through the 1930 and 1950 censuses and to a 1971 death record. Memorial material identifies him as a son of Jeremiah Bryant Castleberry and Georgia Ann Norman Castleberry and names siblings that fit the 1900 household.

Martha Idella "Della" Castleberry can be followed through her 12 August 1917 Colquitt County marriage to Dan or Daniel E. Crosby, then through the 1920, 1930, 1940, and 1950 censuses. A death-index entry for Martha I. Crosby, age fifty-nine, in 1951 fits her well, and Social Security claims material links Della Castleberry to husband Daniel E. Crosby and son Jerry Brogdon Crosby. Those records make her one of the more securely identified children from the 1900 home.

John Jerry Castleberry is also well anchored. He married Ida Norman in Colquitt County on 31 October 1915. A World War I draft card gives his birth as 16 May 1896, his residence on Rural Free Delivery 1 near Norman Park, and his status as married with one child. He can then be followed through the 1920, 1930, 1940, and 1950 censuses, and later death and Social Security index records support the same identification through June 1979. A 1943 draft card for Jesse Bryant Castleberry names John J. Castleberry as father, and a 1923 child death certificate appears to tie John Castleberry and Ida Norman together in a primary-style family record.

Ivy, the two-year-old son in the 1900 household, now appears attachable to the later records of Ivey Dewey Castleberry. His World War I draft registration gives a birth date of 2 October 1898, a Colquitt County residence, and Georgia Castleberry as nearest relative. Later records place Ivey D. Castleberry in Moultrie with wife Mae, children including Gladys and Dewey, and long service as a city fireman. The 1948 Tampa Tribune notice about Gladys Castleberry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I. D. Castleberry of Moultrie, fits that same family. Because the 1900 census already shows Ivy as Jerry and Georgia's one-year-old son, the later Ivey Dewey chain can now be treated as the same child carried into adulthood.

This household matters because it can now be written with firmer evidence and fewer assumptions. The core structure of the 1900 family is secure. Georgia's maternal Alderman line is directly supported by her death certificate. Several children can be followed well into adulthood. What still needs restraint is Jerry's parentage and any larger social interpretation that goes beyond the records.

Connections to Other Barney Families

  • Georgia Ann Norman Castleberry was the daughter of John Norman and Nancy Alderman Norman.
  • Nancy Alderman Norman appears to be the same woman shown as Nancy Norman in the 1870 Colquitt County household and as the wife indexed as Rutha Norman in the 1880 Colquitt County household.
  • Nancy Castleberry married Jim or James Harrison Alderman, giving the household a second Alderman connection through the next generation.
  • John Jerry Castleberry married Ida Norman, which kept the Norman surname tied to the family in the following generation as well.

Military Service

William Joseph Castleberry, the Joseph Castleberry child in the 1900 household, has a documented World War I service trail. The current file cites draft registration and military service material placing him in Company E, 45th Infantry, with service extending into March 1919. Later death and veterans-index material carry the same adult identity into 1971.

Open Research Questions

  • Jerry's burial and memorial material strongly support the identification Jeremiah Bryant Castleberry, born 28 March 1859 and died 10 May 1907, but a direct death certificate or equivalent primary death record would strengthen the case.
  • Jerry's own parentage should remain open until a stronger direct record is added.
  • The 1880 census entry for John Norman's wife is indexed as Rutha Norman; the evidence supports treating her as the same woman later identified as Nancy Alderman Norman, but the name discrepancy should be acknowledged.
  • The apparent 1910 census entry for Nancy A. Alderman does not fit Nancy Castleberry's age cleanly and should not be used heavily without better image review.
  • The 1900 tax digest reference for Jerry or Jeremiah Castleberry supports adult taxable presence in the district, not land ownership by itself.

Research Status

Well-researched. The household now rests on the 1900 census, the 1887 marriage record for Jerry Castleberry and Georgia Ann Norman, the 1870 and 1880 Norman household placements for Georgia, Georgia Ann Castleberry's 1931 death certificate naming John Norman and Nancy Alderman Norman, and substantial later records for children Nancy, William Joseph, Martha Idella, John Jerry, and Ivey Dewey. The main remaining gaps are Jerry's own parentage, a stronger direct death record for Jerry, and a few points in the later Nancy Alderman trail.
