Family Narrative

  • The 1900 Barney household contains John Morse, wife Laura F. Morse, and son Charley Morse.
  • John can be traced backward as John Moss in Brooks County in 1870 and 1880, and the later records support treating Moss and Morse as the same man.
  • Laura is securely placed as Laura F. Olliff in the 1860 and 1870 households of Zadock and Elizabeth Olliff, and her 1940 death certificate names father Z. Oliff and mother Elizabeth Williams.
  • Later records tie this household to daughter Minnie Lee Morse Belcher, son Charles Evers Morse, and grandson Able J. Morse.

John Morse appears in the 1900 census as a forty-nine-year-old Georgia farmer renting his place in Barney. Laura, born in March 1858, had borne two children, both living, and the couple reported that they had been married twenty-three years. Their son Charley, age twenty, was still at home. The 1910 census keeps John and Laura in Barney, still farming and still renting, with the marriage length reported there as about thirty-three years.

The earlier Brooks County records support the same couple under the surname Moss. In 1880 John E. Moss and wife L. F. Moss were already established in their own household with children Minnie Lee and Charles. In 1870 a nineteen-year-old John Moss appears in the household of James and Martha Moss in Brooks County. The surname change from Moss to Morse is not unusual for this period, and the combination of age, place, wife Laura, and later children makes the identification persuasive.

Laura's side of the family is much better documented directly. In 1860 she appears as Laura F. Olliff, age two, in the Brooks County household of Zadok and Elizbeth Olliff. In 1870 she is again in the household of Zadock Olliff. Her Georgia death certificate gives her as Laura Frances Morse, born 1 March 1858, died 22 March 1940, with father Z. Oliff and mother Elizabeth Williams. The state death index gives the same death date under certificate 11517. Cemetery memorial material places both Laura and John at Oak Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

The move from Barney to Quitman is clear in the later census trail. In 1920 John E. Morse and Laura were in Quitman, and the census states that they owned their home free of mortgage. In 1930 they were still together there with grandson Abel J. Morse in the household. By 1940 Laura had died, and the Quitman household contained widowed John Morse together with son Charley E. Morse, daughter-in-law Minnie, and grandson Fred. That 1940 arrangement helps carry the family line forward into the next generation.

The children's later records are strong enough to update the older entry in several places. Charles Evers Morse married Minnie V. Ingram in Brooks County in 1900. He can then be followed through a World War I draft card, the 1910, 1920, 1930, 1940, and 1950 censuses, a 1959 Georgia death-index entry, a 1959 obituary, cemetery memorial material, and a Social Security claims entry that names his parents as John Morse and Laura Olliff or Olive. The obituary names his sister as Mrs. Minnie A. Belcher of Plant City, Florida, which supports Minnie Lee Morse Belcher as the daughter missing from the 1900 parental household. The same Charles line also clarifies the grandson in John and Laura's later home. The Social Security Applications and Claims Index entry for Able J. Morse gives his birth as 14 February 1907 at Morven and names his parents as Charles E. Morse and Minnie Ingram. That record, together with the 1930 and 1940 census placements, makes it reasonable to identify Abel as the son of Charles and the grandson living with John and Laura.

Open Research Questions

  • A direct marriage record for John Morse and Laura Olliff has not yet been added to the file, even though the census trail places the marriage about 1876 or 1877.
  • A direct death certificate for John Evers Morse has not yet been added. His 1948 death date and burial are currently supported by cemetery memorial material rather than by the certificate itself.
  • The Moss-to-Morse identification is strongly supported by the census sequence and family structure, but no single bridge record has yet been found that states both forms together.
  • Minnie Lee Morse Belcher is well supported as a daughter of John and Laura through the 1880 census and Charles's 1959 obituary, but a direct record naming her parents would still strengthen the line.

Research Status

Well-researched. The household now rests on a seven-census chain for John and Laura from 1870 through 1940, direct parental-context records for Laura Olliff, Laura's death certificate and death-index entry, later records for Charles Evers Morse from marriage through death, and a Social Security claims record that names Able J. Morse as the son of Charles E. Morse and Minnie Ingram. The main remaining gaps are John's death certificate and the couple's marriage record.
