Current findings
George Lemon is now anchored by a solid Brooks County chain from 1890 through 1920. In the 1890 Brooks County tax digest, George Lemons appears in the Tallokas district on the Freedman tax list. By 1900 he was in Barney as a single Black farmer, and he remains there in 1910 and 1920 under the surname forms Lemon, Lemons, and Lemmon. In 1910 his farm was owned free of mortgage and the household included Charlie, Katie, Columbus, Webster, and Irvin McDaniels as boarders. In 1920 he was still single, still farming, and still shown with land owned free, with Ben Fross in the household.
The strongest current pre-1890 lead for George is an 1880 Leeton, Sumter County household indexed as George Lamon. That George was a Black man of the right age, born in Georgia, and was living with wife Cheny and children Cathrine, Robert, and Henry. The match is plausible and worth keeping in the entry, but it still needs a direct bridge because the Barney man is listed as single in 1900.
The 1870 Lowndes County candidate for George is also more interesting than it first appeared. A George Lemons of about the right age appears there in a household that included Amy Lemons and Villar Rountree. That does not yet prove identity, but the age fits and the Rountree presence may matter in this Barney setting.
Nancy McLoud can now be discussed with more precision. A Lowndes County marriage record dated 8 July 1875 shows Nancy Rountree marrying Green McLeod. In 1880, Green and Nancy McLeod appear in Morven, Brooks County, with children Warren, William, and Lovie. The available evidence strongly suggests that the woman listed as George Lemon's niece in 1900 is this same Nancy, but the exact path by which she was George's niece remains unproved.
Additional McLeod records help place Nancy's household in the same regional setting. Green McLeod appears in Brooks County in 1870 and in the 1871 Tallokas district tax digest. Those records strengthen the local continuity of Nancy's married household, even though they do not by themselves identify George Lemon's parents or siblings.
Connections to Other Barney Families
Nancy McLoud is the clearest kinship clue attached to this household. The best present reading is that she was Nancy Rountree before her 1875 marriage to Green McLeod and Nancy McLeod in the 1880 Morven household. That makes the Rountree and McLeod lines directly relevant to HH#121, but the exact documentary link between George Lemon and Nancy still has not been found.
The 1870 George Lemons candidate in a household with Villar Rountree adds another possible tie to the local Rountree network. For now, that should remain a lead rather than a stated family connection.
Open Research Questions
- The 1880 George Lamon household in Sumter County is the best present earlier candidate for George, but the identification is still not proved.
- The 1900 use of the relationship term niece for Nancy McLoud is important, but the record trail has not yet shown whether that kinship ran through a Lemon, Rountree, McLeod, or other family line.
- Death, burial, probate, land, and later census records are still needed to close George's life after 1920.
- Marriage records for George under Lemon, Lemons, Lemmon, and Lamon, with spouse variants Cheny, Cheney, and Chaney, remain worth searching.
Research Status
WELL-RESEARCHED: George Lemon is documented in Brooks County through the 1890 Tallokas tax digest and the 1900, 1910, and 1920 Barney censuses. A plausible 1880 Sumter County carry-back and a plausible 1870 Lowndes County candidate have both been identified, but neither is yet proved as the same man. Nancy McLoud, listed as George's niece in 1900, is now strongly supported as the same woman who married Green McLeod in Lowndes County in 1875 and appears as Nancy McLeod in Morven in 1880. The main remaining questions concern George's earlier identity, the exact kinship path to Nancy, and his death and burial.
