Family Narrative
The present evidence supports a two-census reconstruction of this household, with one later child record, but not yet a full family identification. The 1900 Barney household indexed as Ida Johnson appears to match the 1910 Barney household headed by Iley F. Johnson. The handwriting on the 1900 census appears closer to Ily than Ida, which makes the alignment with 1910 stronger than the index alone suggests. Place, spouse, and child pattern all point to the same family.
In 1900 the household consisted of a head best read as Ily Johnson, born in North Carolina about August 1865, with wife Hattie, born in Georgia about 1873, and children Amanda, Frank, and Walter. Walter was nine months old when the census was taken, so his birth belongs about September 1899 rather than 1888. The household also included Amanda Roberts, listed as grandmother, age sixty-nine, with Bessie Roberts, niece, age thirteen, and Hubart Roberts, nephew, age ten. Those Roberts relationships are important, but the records now in hand do not show whether they connect through Hattie, through the Johnson head, or through an earlier household generation.
The 1910 Barney household strengthens the continuity case. It shows Iley F. Johnson, born about 1860 in North Carolina, with wife Hattie and children Jessie, Frank, Walter, Callie, Cleveland, and Lucy. The move from owned farm in 1900 to rented farm in 1910 does not break the identification. The stronger anchors are location, spouse, and the carry-forward of Frank and Walter into the later child set.
A useful later record now extends one child forward. Jessie Easter's 1921 Brooks County death certificate gives her place of death as Barney, Militia District 1571, age twenty-six years and eight months, birthplace Brooks County, and father Iley Johnson. That makes her a strong fit for the Jessie Johnson in the 1910 household and gives direct support for reading the household head as Iley rather than Ida. The same death certificate names her mother as Jessie Johnson rather than Hattie Johnson. That conflict should be preserved as written and treated cautiously until another direct record shows whether it reflects informant error, a second name, or a different family complication not yet visible in census records.
At this stage, the household can be described as partially reconstructed but not closed. The 1900 and 1910 census households likely belong to the same family, and Jessie Easter's death certificate gives the best later confirmation now in hand. Hattie Johnson remains the clearest continuous anchor across the census records. Walter Johnson's birth should be read as about September 1899. The main unresolved problems are the missing 1920 placement, the exact relationship of the Roberts group, and the mother-name conflict raised by Jessie Easter's death certificate.
Connections to Other Barney Families
- Amanda Roberts, Bessie Roberts, and Hubart Roberts likely preserve the key to Hattie's family or to an earlier Johnson-Roberts household connection.
- The family remained in the Barney/Brooks area from 1900 to 1910, and Jessie Easter's 1921 death certificate places the same cluster in Militia District 1571.
Open Research Questions
- The 1900 head is best read from the handwriting as Ily Johnson, but the indexed form Ida Johnson should still be noted in case other databases preserve that reading.
- The household still needs a confident 1920 census identification.
- Hattie Johnson still needs a marriage record, death record, or other direct record tying her to this same household.
- Jessie Easter likely belongs in this family, but the death certificate's naming of mother Jessie Johnson instead of Hattie Johnson needs resolution.
- Amanda Roberts, Bessie Roberts, and Hubart Roberts still need relationship proof.
- Frank, Walter, Callie, Cleveland, and Lucy still need follow-forward records that confirm the 1900 and 1910 family reconstruction.
Research Status
Source-exhausted online. The 1900 and 1910 Brooks County census households likely represent the same Johnson family, and Jessie Easter's 1921 death certificate gives meaningful support for the Ily/Iley reading of the head and for one child's later identity. Even so, the Roberts kinship problem, the missing 1920 census placement, and the mother-name conflict remain unresolved. Further progress likely depends on courthouse, cemetery, church, probate, tax, deed, or other local records not currently available online.
