The Barney History Project: The people, places, and stories of Barney, Georgia

Household #95: Dean, Robert

In the 1900 Barney census, this household was headed by Robert Dean and included 6 people. The census summary records the head's listed occupation was Day Laborer Still, 1 spouse or marital partner, 4 child or stepchild.

Household Snapshot

A good way to read this page is to start with Robert Dean (age 49, born in Georgia, listed as Day Laborer Still). The occupation gives one grounded way to read the household: not just as a census entry, but as people tied to the work, travel, land, stores, churches, schools, and court business of the Barney area.

The household was not just the head's name. In 1900 it included spouse or marital partner Martha Dean; children Anna Dean, Katie Dean, Ida Dean, and William Dean. Those names are the starting point for the later family, labor, marriage, migration, and neighborhood trails below.

Every listed person in this household was reported as born in Georgia, which makes the page a local-family snapshot unless later records show movement into or out of Barney.

1900 Census Household

Name Relation Age Birthplace Occupation
Robert Dean Head 49 Georgia Day Laborer Still
Martha Dean Wife 48 Georgia —
Anna Dean Daughter 19 Georgia —
Katie Dean Daughter 13 Georgia —
Ida Dean Daughter 11 Georgia —
William Dean Son 7 Georgia —

Children and Later Trails

The household table above already lists the children present in 1900: Anna Dean, Katie Dean, Ida Dean, William Dean.

Where a child's adult trail is not identified here, the gap is intentional. The page should wait for a marriage, death, cemetery, obituary, probate, later census, or other direct record before naming a later spouse or descendant line.

Family Narrative

The 1900 census places Robert Dean in Barney with wife Martha and four children in the home: Anna, Katie, Ida, and William. That household is the firm anchor for HH#95. A Brooks County marriage record then ties the couple together directly: R. D. Dean and M. J. Gornto were licensed on 13 December 1880 and married on 16 December 1880. On Martha's side, the evidence is steady. She appears as Martha Gornto, age 19, in 1870 Brooks County in the household of Mary Gornto, and again as Martha J. Gornto, age 29, in the same family cluster in Quitman in 1880 just before the marriage.

Robert's earlier identity is supported, though not proved in every detail. The 1860 Brooks County census places Robert Dean, age 10, in William E. Dean's household. A later Dry Lake tax record lists Robert D. Deen directly below William E. Dean, and R. D. Dean married Martha J. Gornto in Brooks County in 1880. Together, those records make William E. Dean Robert's strong-probable father. The 1860 schedule does not state relationships, however, and no probate, death certificate, Bible, deed, or guardianship record names William as Robert's father.

The 1870 schedule introduces an important conflict. The young man in the William and Dillilah Dean cluster is written Daniel Dean, age 19, not Robert. Daniel may have been Robert under another given name, a brother, or another relative, but the record does not settle the question. The name Robert Daniel Dean should therefore not be treated as proved.

The Florida records belong to a separate, unresolved branch unless new direct evidence connects them. In 1910, Robert D. Deen of Calhoun County, Florida, was about eleven years younger than the 1900 Barney Robert. He and wife Eliza each reported a first marriage of thirteen years. Those details conflict with Robert's 1900 marriage to Martha and with Martha's continuing household at Barney in 1910. The former claim that the Barney Robert began a second family in Florida is not supported by the combined census evidence.

Martha's later life is much better documented than Robert's. Her Georgia death certificate identifies Mrs. Martha Dean as a widowed woman who died at Moultrie, Colquitt County, on 10 November 1934; it gives her birth date as 29 October 1851, birthplace as Brooks County, and father only as Mr. Gornto. The informant was W. A. Pippin, a detail that fits well with the later identification of daughter Katherine Kate Dean Pippin. A Find a Grave memorial provides secondary burial support for Martha at Westview Cemetery in Moultrie. The Robert D. Dean memorial at Mashburn Cemetery in Bay County, Florida, cannot safely be assigned to the Barney household head because it is entangled with the rejected Florida identity merge.

Connections to Other Barney Families

Martha's documented Gornto background connects HH#95 to the Gornto family network treated elsewhere in the encyclopedia, including the Gornto households in HH#14 and HH#15. The Pippin informant on Martha's death certificate also supports the later Kate Dean Pippin line.

Open Research Questions

  • Parentage audit: Keep head-of-household and spouse parentage as unresolved unless a cited direct record names the parents or the entry explains the census chain supporting the identification.
  • Other household member audit: Verify every non-nuclear household member, including in-laws, boarders, servants, laborers, uncles, grandchildren, and collateral relatives, before treating the stated relationship as part of the proved family structure.
  • Robert's full middle name and exact birthplace remain unproven from the present direct-record set.
  • William E. Dean remains Robert's strong-probable father, but a parent-naming record has not been found.
  • Daniel Dean's identity in the 1870 household remains unresolved.
  • The adult trails of Anna, Ida, and William remain incomplete; Katie's later Pippin identity is strong probable.

Research Status

The Barney household is well documented. The two-direction surname audit supports the William E. Dean-to-Robert bridge as strong probable, keeps Daniel Dean unplaced, and rejects the former Florida second-family narrative as unproved.
