The head's listed occupation was Farmer.
All listed household members were reported as born in Georgia.

Family Narrative
The manuscript surname favors Joyce, while the index renders it “Joyer.” The head’s faint name entry does not independently establish the expanded name John Wesley P. Joyce. The identification rests on the household and family-record comparisons discussed below.
John's early trail is now stronger than the previous entry suggested. In 1860, "Jno W. P. Joyce," age six, appears in Brooks County in the household of Elizabeth Joyce. In 1870, "John Joyce," age fifteen, again appears in Brooks County with Elizabeth Joyce. Those two records show a consistent early placement, but by themselves they do not prove every parentage claim previously attached to him. The safest conclusion is that John belonged to the Joyce family cluster represented by Elizabeth Joyce and was still in Brooks County across both enumerations.
By 1880, John appears as "J. W. Joyce" in Brooks County with wife "C. V. Joyce." That census provides firm evidence of an earlier marriage before his 1900 household with Mollie Bourquin. The older writeup overstated the identities and later lives of the children in that earlier household. The 1880 image should control any future restatement of those children rather than recycled notes. What can be said confidently now is that John had an earlier family unit in place by 1880 and that the Brooks County marriage license and return identify that marriage as John W. Joyce to Catharine V. Harrington, license issued 2 January 1877 and marriage performed 4 January 1877. A Southern Christian Advocate marriage notice adds corroborating detail, stating that Rev. J. H. D. McRae married "Mr. J. W. Joyce" to "Miss Caddie Harrington" at Rev. John Delk's on 2 January 1877, all of Brooks County.
John's second marriage is much better integrated into the larger Barney network because of the Bourquin evidence already assembled for Household #89. Brooks County marriage records place John Joyce's marriage to Mary Louisa Bourquin in 1892. Mollie was a daughter of Dr. Stephen William Bourquin and Fannie Louisa Pace Bourquin, which links Household #91 directly to the Bourquin family already documented elsewhere in this encyclopedia. By 1900, John and Mollie were farming in the Barney community with four young children: Susie, Ben, Clancie, and Walter.
The 1910 census gives the next secure household anchor. John W. Joyce, age fifty-five, and Mollie L. Joyce, age thirty-nine, were still in Brooks County. The user-supplied image confirms that this later household should be read carefully from the record itself rather than from older derivative summaries. At minimum, it shows John and Mollie still together in 1910 and confirms continuity of the family in the Barney area. It also makes clear that parts of the former entry, especially the treatment of the children across the two marriages, need a more restrained reading than before.
Mollie's later endpoint is supported by the Georgia death index. That index lists "Mollie B. Joyce," age eighty-five, born about 1871, with residence and death place in Brooks County and certificate number 5078. This is good support for identifying the widowed later-life Mary or Mollie Joyce as the same Bourquin daughter seen in the 1900 and 1910 households, although the death certificate itself would still be preferable for full detail. Earlier work also placed John's death in 1911 and his burial at Camp Ground Cemetery, but that endpoint should be treated as strong prior research rather than freshly reverified in the present pass unless the direct death or burial record is pulled again.
Connections to Other Barney Families
- HH#89 Stephen William Bourquin: proved through John Joyce's marriage to Mary Louisa "Mollie" Bourquin, daughter of Dr. Stephen William Bourquin and Fannie Louisa Pace Bourquin.
- HH#84 John T. Morrow: possible community connection through Rev. John Delk's residence, now supported by the Southern Christian Advocate marriage notice reporting that Rev. J. H. D. McRae married John Joyce and "Caddie Harrington" at Rev. John Delk's; useful context, but still secondary to the direct Bourquin connection.
Open Research Questions
- Parentage audit: Keep head-of-household and spouse parentage as unresolved unless a cited direct record names the parents or the entry explains the census chain supporting the identification.
- Child census audit: Continue direct-record tracking for each child named in the 1900 household where later census, marriage, death, burial, obituary, or other parent-link proof is not already cited above.
- The 1860 and 1870 censuses place John in Elizabeth Joyce's household, but those records alone do not settle his full parentage.
- The 1880 household should be recopied directly from the image before making firm claims about the names, ages, and later identities of the children from John's first marriage.
- The 1877 marriage to Catharine V. Harrington is now supported by both the literal Brooks County marriage license and return and a Southern Christian Advocate marriage notice. The notice's "Caddie Harrington" wording is best treated as a nickname or newspaper rendering alongside the formal county-record "Catharine V. Harrington." The 1892 marriage to Mary Louisa Bourquin would still benefit from the same direct-record treatment in a future tightening pass.
- John Joyce's exact death date and burial location were preserved from earlier work but were not freshly rechecked in this pass.
- Mollie's death index is strong support, but the death certificate would provide better control over exact birth, death, and parental details.
Research Status
Well-Researched. The household now rests on a solid 1860-1870-1880-1900-1910 census framework, a documented Bourquin marriage connection, and later death-index support for Mollie B. Joyce. What remains is not a basic identity problem but a tightening problem: recheck the literal marriage records, copy the 1880 child data exactly from the census image, and refresh the direct endpoint evidence for John and Mollie before calling the entry fully source-exhausted.
