Family Narrative
The 1900 Barney census shows Edgar Jones and wife Lizzie Jones as a young Brooks County farm household with one infant son, William. Later records make clear that this was Edgar Jelks Jones and Annie Elizabeth "Lizzie" Ryall Jones, a couple whose documented life stayed centered in Brooks County while some of their children later spread into Florida and beyond.
Edgar can be followed across a solid census chain. In 1870 he appears as an infant in Brooks County in the household of Malachi Jones and Cornelia Jones. In 1880 he appears as eleven-year-old Edgar Jones in the household of Frank Jones and Cornelia Jones in the Nankin district. His 1928 death certificate gives his parents as M. F. Jones and Cornelia Powell, which fits the census evidence well and helps tie the childhood and adult records together.
Annie Elizabeth Ryall can also be placed securely before her marriage. In 1880 she appears as Annie E. Ryall, age six, in the Morven household of William and Edna Ryall. That record links HH#71 directly back to HH#70, where her parents are documented as William Raiford or Raford Ryall and Edna Vickers Ryall. It also links HH#71 sideways to HH#69, since Hardy Vickers Ryall was Annie's brother.
Their marriage is no longer inferential. A Brooks County marriage record shows Edgar J. Jones and Lizzie Ryalls licensed on 31 December 1897 and married on 2 January 1898. That record explains the later sequence of names used for Annie across the records: Annie E. Ryall in 1880, Lizzie Ryalls on the marriage record, Lizzie Jones in the 1900 and 1910 censuses, Elizabeth Jones in 1920, Annie R. Jones in the 1955 death index, and Annie Elizabeth Jones on her son James Edgar Jones's World War II draft registration.
The later censuses show a growing family that remained in the Barney area. In 1910 Edgar J. Jones and Lizzie Jones had children Frank, Sarah E., Leon, and Hermine in the household. In 1920 E. J. Jones and Elizabeth Jones were still in Brooks County with children Frank, Sarah Edna, W. Leon, Harry P., Mildred Mae, James E., and Willie, along with Edgar's father M. Frank Jones in the home. Taken together, those records show a stable, multi-generational farm family rooted in the same local community for decades.
The direct William Leon Jones line can now be carried further, but with a FamilySearch profile-cleanup caution. The clean FamilySearch profile for William Leon Jones, MX6P-75T, is attached to Edgar and Annie and has seven sources, including the 1910 and 1920 census records, his Georgia World War II draft registration, Social Security Death Index entry, Georgia death-index entry, and Find a Grave entry. That profile still shows no spouse or children and is flagged by FamilySearch as a person who may have children. Separate thin FamilySearch profiles for William L. Jones and Mauree P. Folsom expose the William/Mauree couple and a son, William Eugene Jones, while a stronger Maurie Folsom profile ties Mauree to Perry Lee Folsom and Ida Harris. FamilySearch record search also exposes a GenealogyBank obituary-index result naming spouse Mauree Folsom Jones and children Barbara Moody Jones Brown, Bernice Jones, Billy Jones, and Edgar Lee Jones. On that basis, William Leon Jones's branch is now extended to Mauree Folsom and their children as a record-supported working continuation, while the profile split and missing attached sources remain explicit cleanup targets.
The 1900 census presents one unresolved but understandable family question. The household includes a one-year-old son William Jones, while later records show a son William Leon Jones born in 1906. The most likely explanation is that the first William died young and the name was later reused for another son, a common pattern in the period. That reading fits the evidence presently in hand, but it should still be treated as probable rather than final until a direct death or burial record for the first child is found.
Edgar's death certificate adds several useful details. It states that Edgar J. Jones died in Brooks County on 10 July 1928, was a married white farmer born in Georgia, named his parents as M. F. Jones and Cornelia Powell, and was buried at Mt. Zion on 11 July 1928. His Find a Grave memorial gives 11 July 1928 as the death date, but that appears to be a confusion with the burial date, so the death certificate should control.
Annie's later records are also strong. Her obituary in The Valdosta Daily Times reports that Mrs. Annie Ryall "Lizzie" Jones died on 21 February 1955 at the home of her daughter Mrs. Mae Becton near Barney, was a member of Mt. Zion Methodist Church at Morven, and was to be buried in Camp Ground Cemetery. The obituary also names her surviving children and siblings, including Hardy Ryall and the other Ryall brothers and sisters that connect her firmly back to HH#69 and HH#70. A Georgia death index entry for Annie R. Jones matches the obituary date, county, and age.
The memorial evidence is helpful here, though still secondary to the direct records. Find a Grave memorial no. 83938146 for Annie Elizabeth Ryall Jones and memorial no. 83938009 for Edgar Jelks Jones confirm burial at Camp Ground Cemetery Mount Zion Church in Morven and reflect the same family links shown by the census, obituary, and death records. Used carefully, they reinforce rather than replace the primary documentation.
Connections to Other Barney Families
- HH#71 to HH#70 William R. Ryall: Annie Elizabeth "Lizzie" Ryall Jones is directly tied to HH#70 as daughter Annie E. Ryall in the household of William and Edna Ryall.
- HH#71 to HH#69 Hardy Ryall: Hardy Vickers Ryall of HH#69 was Annie's brother, and Annie's obituary names him among her surviving siblings.
- HH#71 to HH#65 Charles Wesley Ryall: Charles Wesley Ryall of HH#65 was Annie's paternal uncle, the brother of William Raiford Ryall, linking this household to the older Ryall branch that also married into the Alderman family.
- Jones parental household connection: Edgar J. Jones is tied back to the earlier Jones household of M. F. or Frank Jones and Cornelia Powell through the 1870 and 1880 censuses and his 1928 death certificate, though the exact relationship wording between Malachi Jones and M. Frank Jones should still be tightened with additional records.
- Direct descendant continuation: William Leon Jones, son of Edgar and Annie, married Mauree/Maurie Pansy Folsom. Their child group is now supported by FamilySearch record-search results and obituary-index evidence, including William Eugene "Billy" Jones, Barbara Moody Jones Brown, Edgar Lee Jones, and Emery Bernice/Bernice Jones, but the FamilySearch profiles are split and need source attachment or merge review before being treated as a clean tree structure.
Open Research Questions
- Parentage audit: Keep head-of-household and spouse parentage as unresolved unless a cited direct record names the parents or the entry explains the census chain supporting the identification.
- Annie's full death certificate would be useful for confirming all late-life details and parental information in one direct record.
- The first William Jones in the 1900 household is still not traced by a direct death or burial record.
- The memorial death date for Edgar conflicts with his death certificate by one day; the certificate is the stronger source and should be followed unless another direct record appears.
- The exact relationship between Malachi Jones and M. Frank Jones should be spelled out more fully if additional records are gathered for Edgar's parental household.
- William Leon Jones's FamilySearch profile is under-attached: the profile tied to Edgar and Annie has no spouse/children, while separate thin William L. Jones and Mauree P. Folsom profiles expose the spouse/child bridge. This needs merge/source review before the tree itself is clean.
Research Status
Well documented, with the direct William Leon descendant line newly extended but not profile-cleaned. The household now rests on a strong run of census records, a direct marriage record, Edgar's death certificate, Annie's obituary and death-index entry, cemetery memorials, and later family corroboration through James Edgar Jones's draft registration. The main remaining loose ends are the fate of the first William Jones from the 1900 household and the split FamilySearch profile structure around William Leon Jones, Mauree Folsom, and their children.
