Family Narrative

  • Head: George R. Duggan, age 43 (reading uncertain) in 1900, born Nov 1856 in Georgia, sawyer in a saw mill
  • Wife: Mary "Mollie" Duggan, age 19 in 1900, born Apr 1881 in Georgia
  • Child in the 1900 household: William Duggan, age 1

  • The user-supplied 1900 census image places George R. Duggan in Barney, Brooks County, Georgia, as a white sawyer in a saw mill.

  • That 1900 household includes wife Mollie Duggan and son William Duggan, age 1.
  • The same 1900 record reports that George was born in Nov 1856 in Georgia, had been married four years, and was living in a rented house rather than on a farm.
  • The 1900 record also reports that George's father and mother were both born in Georgia and that George could read, write, and speak English.
  • The user-supplied 1870 census screenshot places George Duggan, age 13, in Valdosta, Lowndes County, Georgia, in the household of Archelaes Duggan and Cardelia Duggan, with younger brother William Duggan; it also reports that George attended school.
  • The user-supplied 1880 census screenshot places George Duggan, age 23, in Valdosta, Lowndes County, Georgia, in the household of Arch Duggan and Delia Duggan, and reports George's occupation as carpenter.
  • The user-supplied 1860 census screenshot appears to place George Duggin, age 4, in Lowndes County, Georgia, in the household of Archibald Duggin and Cordelia Duggin, with younger brother William Duggin.
  • Taken together, the 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1900 census screenshots support a strong Duggan family chain for George across Lowndes County and later Brooks County, though the father's given name appears in variant forms.
  • User-supplied marriage-record images show a Colquitt County, Georgia, license for George Duggan and Mollie Duggan issued 8 Feb 1896, with the certificate stating that they were joined in matrimony on 9 Feb 1896.
  • A user-supplied Valdosta Times page dated 31 May 1890 appears to report that George Duggan had gotten into a difficulty with Wade Moore and suffered a severe hand cut and a stab near the collar bone that was said not to be serious.
  • User-supplied FindAGrave memorial screenshots support burial for George Duggan at Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Moultrie, Colquitt County, Georgia, with the memorial giving birth as 1 Nov 1856 and death as 4 Oct 1902.
  • User-supplied FindAGrave memorial screenshots also support burial for Mollie Duggan Windom in the same cemetery, with the memorial giving birth as 3 Apr 1881 and death as 3 Jun 1971.
  • A user-supplied Georgia death index screenshot for Mollie D. Windom reports death on 3 Jun 1971 in Colquitt County, Georgia, at age 90, with certificate number 014896.
  • User-supplied census screenshots trace Mollie after her second marriage to John A. Windom or Windham in Moultrie, Colquitt County, through 1910, 1920, 1930, 1940, and 1950.
  • The 1910 census screenshot shows John A. Windham, wife Mollie Windham, son Aubry Windham, stepson Willie Duggan, and stepdaughter Carrie Duggan, which supports Carrie as a child of Mollie's first Duggan marriage even though she was not present in the 1900 household screenshot.
  • The 1920, 1930, 1940, and 1950 census screenshots continue Mollie under the Windom or Windham surname in Moultrie and are broadly consistent with the memorial's later death record.
  • A user-supplied 1880 census index screenshot appears to place Martha Duggin, age 2, in Lower Fork, Lowndes County, Georgia, in the household of John Duggin and Nancy J. Duggin. That record is consistent with the FindAGrave memorial's later identification of Mollie Duggan Windom as a daughter of John Duggan and Nancy Jane Weldon Turner.
  • A user-supplied 1922 Colquitt County death certificate for John Duggan places him in Moultrie, identifies him as a married white male age 70, names his wife as Nancy Duggan, and records burial at Pleasant Grove. That certificate strengthens the case that the John Duggan and Nancy Duggan couple remained in the same Colquitt County setting later associated with Mollie.
  • The preserved Brooks County FindAGrave search was negative, which is consistent with the burial evidence pointing instead to Colquitt County.

Research Notes

  • The current file now preserves user-supplied images for the 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1900 census entries. The newly supplied 1880 page image strengthens the preserved record trail, though the entry still needs full source citations for each census record.
  • The current file also now preserves user-supplied images for the Colquitt County marriage license and certificate, but a full source citation should still be added.
  • The burial documentation in Colquitt County is still not preserved here by direct image.
  • The 31 May 1890 newspaper item should be re-read directly from the page image or clipping before relying on every word of the OCR extraction.
  • George's month and year of birth are supported by the 1900 census screenshot, and the FindAGrave memorial provides a specific birth and death date plus cemetery location, but those memorial details remain secondary unless backed by a stone reading, death record, or cemetery register.
  • Mollie's later death is now supported by both the FindAGrave memorial screenshot and a Georgia death index entry, and the later Windom or Windham census chain is consistent with them, though the full death certificate would still be the stronger record.
  • The Martha Duggin index entry remains a useful lead for Mollie's pre-marriage household, but the underlying 1880 census image is still preferable for fully settled proof.
  • John Duggan's 1922 death certificate supports the existence of the John and Nancy Duggan couple in Colquitt County, but it does not by itself prove that Martha Duggin of the 1880 household and Mollie Duggan Windom were the same person.
  • The linked relatives and child listings on FindAGrave are derivative and should be treated as clues unless confirmed by direct records.
  • William Duggan is supported in 1900 and as Willie Duggan in the 1910 Windham household.
  • Carrie Duggan is not present in the 1900 household screenshot, but the 1910 Windham household does support her as Mollie's stepdaughter from the earlier Duggan marriage.
  • The current file does not preserve George's 1910 absence by reason of death through a direct death certificate, obituary, probate record, or cemetery record.
  • The old draft's broader socioeconomic and community-role framing went beyond the present source set and should stay out unless stronger direct records are added.

Open Research Questions

  • Parentage audit: confirm both parents of the household head for HH#41 through direct or near-direct records where possible; mark derivative-only parent links as unresolved until supported.
  • Child census audit: confirm every child named in the 1900 household against later census, marriage, death, obituary, cemetery, probate, or draft records; separate proven child links from same-name candidates.
  • Other household member audit: verify boarders, servants, in-laws, stepchildren, grandchildren, and unrelated residents in HH#41; document the exact relationship instead of assuming kinship.
  • Spouse and marriage audit: locate marriage records, death records, divorce records, or later census records for spouses or absent spouses tied to this household.
  • Direct image review: re-check the 1900 census image and any cited index-only sources before treating ages, relationships, birthplaces, or name spellings as final.

Research Status

  • Status: Strongly documented and close to complete, but not fully source-exhausted.
  • Strengths: George is now supported by a four-census chain, a direct marriage record, a likely 1890 newspaper item, and burial-level evidence in Colquitt County. Mollie is supported by a long later-life census chain, memorial evidence, and a Georgia death-index entry. Willie and Carrie are both supported through the later Windham household.
  • Remaining cautions: The main missing item is a direct death-side record for George. Mollie's pre-marriage identification as Martha Duggin remains a strong but not fully closed identification until the full 1880 household image is tied down more precisely. Cemetery-register or stone-level confirmation would also strengthen the burial side.
