Family Narrative

  • Head: Prince Herring, age 30 in 1900, born Apr 1870 in Georgia, farmer
  • Wife: Laura Herring, age 25 in 1900, born 1875 in Georgia
  • Children in the 1900 household: Simon Herring, Minnie Herring, Plinie Herring, and Lizzie Herring

  • The 1900 census places Prince Herring in Barney, Brooks County, Georgia, as a Black farmer renting his farm.

  • The same 1900 household includes wife Laura Herring and children Simon, Minnie, Plinie, and Lizzie.
  • The 1900 census reports that Prince and Laura had been married about eleven years, which supports a marriage about 1889.
  • The 1900 census records Prince as unable to read or write and Laura as able to do both.
  • The user-supplied 1910 census screenshot places Prince Herring in Morven, Brooks County, Georgia, still farming, with wife Laura and daughters Minnie, Cazzy, Alice, and Fannie in the household. That record supports continuity of the family in Brooks County after 1900.
  • The user-supplied 1920 census screenshot places Prince and Laura Herring in Morven, Brooks County, Georgia, with daughters Sudie, Alice, and Fannie still at home. That record extends the household trail to 1920.
  • The user-supplied 1870 census screenshot shows an eleven-year-old Prince Herring in Militia District 1157, Berrien County, Georgia, in a household headed by Willian Herring and Pheraby Herring. That is a strong candidate earlier household for HH#38.
  • The user-supplied 1880 census screenshot places Prince Herring, age 21, in District 1146, Berrien County, Georgia, single and working in turpentine. That record is consistent with a pre-marriage Prince Herring in the same general county area.
  • The user-supplied 1880 census screenshot for Laura Sharpe places a fifteen-year-old Laura Sharpe in Quitman, Brooks County, Georgia, as daughter in the household of Margarette Sharpe. That is a strong candidate pre-marriage household for Prince Herring's wife.
  • The user-supplied Georgia death certificate for Prince Herring records that he died on 1 May 1924 in Morven District, Brooks County, Georgia, aged 60, widowed, a farmer, with father listed as Will Herring and mother as Feraby Herring. The certificate does not name his deceased wife or establish when she died. Taken cautiously, that death record materially strengthens the identification of the 1870 Willian and Pheraby Herring household as Prince's earlier family.
  • Taken together, the supplied census sequence supports a probable life-course trail from Berrien County in 1870 and 1880 to Brooks County in 1900, 1910, and 1920, while the death certificate adds later support for the Will/Feraby parent identification.
  • Positive FindAGrave memorials are cited for both Prince Herring and Laura Sharp Herring at Salem Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Pavo, Brooks County, Georgia. Those memorials are useful for burial placement and for pointing to underlying death-certificate references, but the linked relatives and memorial narrative text should remain secondary.

Research Notes

  • The 1870 household strongly suggests that Prince was part of the Willian and Pheraby Herring household, and the 1924 death certificate supports that reading, but the parent identification still rests partly on informant-supplied death-record data and should be stated with ordinary caution.
  • The age pattern across the supplied censuses is not fully consistent. The 1870 and 1880 screenshots imply birth about 1859, the 1910 and 1920 screenshots imply birth about 1862 or 1863, while the 1900 screenshot reports Apr 1870 and the 1924 death certificate implies about 1864.
  • Laura's 1880 Sharpe household is a strong lead, but her maiden-name-to-married-name bridge would be stronger with a marriage record or death certificate.
  • The later child list is much stronger than before, but child-by-child direct support is still needed if the entry is expanded into a fuller family reconstruction.
  • Laura Herring's later life still lacks a directly supplied death certificate in this file, even though the memorial provides a strong burial lead.

Open Research Questions

  • Parentage audit: confirm both parents of the household head for HH#38 through direct or near-direct records where possible; mark derivative-only parent links as unresolved until supported.
  • Child census audit: confirm every child named in the 1900 household against later census, marriage, death, obituary, cemetery, probate, or draft records; separate proven child links from same-name candidates.
  • Other household member audit: verify boarders, servants, in-laws, stepchildren, grandchildren, and unrelated residents in HH#38; document the exact relationship instead of assuming kinship.
  • Spouse and marriage audit: locate marriage records, death records, divorce records, or later census records for spouses or absent spouses tied to this household.
  • Direct image review: re-check the 1900 census image and any cited index-only sources before treating ages, relationships, birthplaces, or name spellings as final.

Research Status

  • Status: Strongly documented household; not yet fully source-exhausted.
  • Strengths: The household is supported by a five-census trail spanning 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920, a direct 1924 death certificate for Prince Herring, a strong 1880 pre-marriage household candidate for Laura Sharpe, and positive cemetery leads for both Prince and Laura.
  • Remaining cautions: The main unresolved issue is Prince's birth-year conflict across the censuses and death record. The other notable remaining gap is direct-record closure for Laura's maiden-name bridge and later death details.
