Direct household anchor - The surviving HH#30 record set securely anchors the family in Barney in 1900. - The preserved 1900 household shows John Register, Della Register, Katie Register, John Register, and Martha Willear in one home. - The same 1900 entry supports that the household was owned and free of mortgage. - It also preserves John's occupation as "Wood Woodsman."
Later record trail - User-supplied census screenshots now directly document the family in 1910 and 1920. - The 1910 Barney census shows John D. Register, age 47, born in North Carolina, with wife Della, daughter Catharine Moris, son Rufus Register, and daughter Gladis Register. It also shows laborer work in public work, home ownership, and free-of-mortgage status. - The 1920 Hickory Head, Brooks County, census shows J. D. Register, age 57, born in North Carolina, with wife Della, daughter Gladys Register, Martha Wilcox, and nephew Lonnie Wilcox. - The preserved HH#30 materials also cite a marriage record for John Register and Susan Idella Wilcox on 10 Jul 1890 in Berrien County, Georgia. - User-supplied FindAGrave screenshots add two direct cemetery references: John Drew "Jack" Register, memorial 87406499, and Susan Idella "Della" Wilcox Register, memorial 87406334, both at Oak Hill Cemetery in Quitman, Brooks County, Georgia. - The John memorial shows birth 16 Aug 1861 in North Carolina and death 31 Dec 1927 in Brooks County, Georgia. The Susan memorial shows birth in 1868, death in 1946 in Jefferson County, Florida, and burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. - User-supplied 1860, 1870, and 1880 census screenshots now provide a stronger North Carolina pre-Barney trail for John D. or Jack Register. In 1860 he appears as John D. Register, age 2, in Northwest District, Brunswick County, North Carolina, in the household of John N. Register and Elizabeth Register. In 1870 and 1880 he appears in Richmond County, North Carolina, in the household of John M. or J. N. Register and Elizabeth Register. - User-supplied Georgia death-certificate screenshots now directly document John Drew Register's death in Brooks County on 31 Dec 1927. The certificate gives birth 16 Aug 1861 in North Carolina, spouse Della Mae Wilcox, father John Register, mother Elizabeth Thornton, and burial at Oak Hill Cemetery on 1 Jan 1928. - User-supplied Georgia death-certificate screenshots also now directly document Martha J. Wilcox's death in Brooks County on 6 Dec 1920 at age 82. The certificate gives birthplace Georgia, father Hugh McCann, mother Sarah McCann, spouse J. B. Wilcox, and burial at Oak Hill Cemetery on 7 Dec 1920. - User-supplied 1850 Thomas County census screenshots add an earlier McCan household that includes Martha McCan, age 11, and Sarah McCan, age 46. Image review confirms that the indexed name "Hazh" is a transcription error for Hugh, which brings the household into much closer agreement with Martha's later death-certificate parent pair. - User-supplied later-life screenshots now extend Susan Idella Register's trail through 1930 in Brooks County, 1940 in Wakulla County, Florida, 1945 in Jefferson County, Florida, and a 1946 Florida death-index entry in Jefferson County.
What the current record set supports - The family is now directly anchored in Brooks County in 1900, 1910, and 1920. - The user-supplied 1910 and 1920 screenshots materially strengthen the household continuity that earlier versions only summarized. - The user-supplied 1860, 1870, and 1880 screenshots strongly support a North Carolina origin line for John D. or Jack Register and fit the later Brooks County birthplace reports. - The 1860 Brunswick County household is especially important because it places John D. Register in the John N. Register and Elizabeth Register household at about age 2, which aligns well with the later death-certificate identification of his parents as John Register and Elizabeth Thornton. - The user-supplied death certificate and FindAGrave memorial together directly support John Drew Register's death on 31 Dec 1927 and burial at Oak Hill Cemetery in Quitman. - The death certificate also materially strengthens the identification of John's parents as John Register and Elizabeth Thornton, which fits the North Carolina Register household trail. - The user-supplied later-life screenshots show a coherent widowhood trail for Susan: 1930 in Brooks County with daughter Gladis, 1940 in Wakulla County in the Ray Thompson household, 1945 in Jefferson County, Florida, and a 1946 Florida death-index entry in Jefferson County. - The user-supplied FindAGrave memorials directly support that John and Susan were buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Quitman and that the memorial creator associated them as spouses. - Martha Wilcox's presence in both the 1900 and 1920 households supports a multi-generational household structure over a long span. - Martha J. Wilcox's death is now directly documented on 6 Dec 1920, which reconciles the earlier conflict created by the unreliable 1919 family-panel date attached to Susan's memorial. - The 1850 Thomas County McCan household materially strengthens the identification of Martha's parents as Hugh McCann and Sarah McCann. That conclusion is now supported by the death certificate plus the reviewed census image, not by derivative tree material alone.
Cautions - Much of the older HH#30 narrative was more specific than the currently preserved local proof packet justified, but the new screenshots materially improve that packet. - The FindAGrave memorials improve the burial and death trail for John and Susan, but FindAGrave remains a derivative source unless matched against death certificates, cemetery registers, or other direct records. - A real birth-year conflict remains visible. The 1900 census gives John a birth date of Oct 1859, the 1860 census points to about 1858, while the 1870 and 1880 censuses, the death certificate, and the John memorial point toward 16 Aug 1861, and the 1910 and 1920 enumerations point more broadly to about 1863. - The 1900 screenshot gives a marriage year of 1891, but the supplied marriage certificate shows John Register and Susan Idella Wilcox married on 10 Jul 1890 in Berrien County, Georgia. The 1890 date should be preferred over the census-year discrepancy. - The Susan memorial's family-members panel points to Martha Jane McCann Wilcox as 1838-1919, but the 1920 census screenshot shows Martha Wilcox alive in the household at age 81, and the supplied Georgia death certificate records Martha J. Wilcox's death on 6 Dec 1920. The family-panel date is therefore unreliable. - The recent Geneanet screenshots are still useful only as clue material. They are no longer necessary for the core McCann parent identification, which now rests on the death certificate and the 1850 census household.
Open Research Questions
- Parentage audit: confirm both parents of the household head for HH#30 through direct or near-direct records where possible; mark derivative-only parent links as unresolved until supported.
- Child census audit: confirm every child named in the 1900 household against later census, marriage, death, obituary, cemetery, probate, or draft records; separate proven child links from same-name candidates.
- Other household member audit: verify boarders, servants, in-laws, stepchildren, grandchildren, and unrelated residents in HH#30; document the exact relationship instead of assuming kinship.
- Spouse and marriage audit: locate marriage records, death records, divorce records, or later census records for spouses or absent spouses tied to this household.
- Direct image review: re-check the 1900 census image and any cited index-only sources before treating ages, relationships, birthplaces, or name spellings as final.
Research Status
- Status: Strong direct support for the Brooks County household in 1900, 1910, and 1920, plus a strong North Carolina pre-Barney trail through 1860, 1870, and 1880, direct Georgia death-certificate evidence for John Drew Register and Martha J. Wilcox, a direct marriage certificate for John and Susan dated 10 Jul 1890, a later Susan trail through 1930, 1940, 1945, and the 1946 Florida death index, and a stronger McCann reconstruction for Martha through the 1850 Thomas County household. The main remaining uncertainty is John's exact birth year, not the household identity.
