Identity and family reconstruction - The 1880 census in Powder Springs, Cobb County, Georgia, lists J. M. Bridges, age 3, in the household of T. M. Bridges and S. L. Bridges. The same household includes D. Bridges, age 7/12. - A Berrien County marriage certificate dated 25 May 1899 names James M. Bridges and Jennie Parrish. - A marriage notice reprinted in The Valdosta Times on 6 June 1899 reports that Marvin Bridges married Miss Jennie Parrish at the Parrish home near Adel. - The 1900 census in Barney, Brooks County, Georgia, records the household as Mervin Bridges with wife Jennie Bridges, married within the year. Taken together, these records support treating J. M., James M., Marvin, and Mervin Bridges as the same man.

Connection to HH#21 - The 1880 Cobb County household places J. M. Bridges and D. Bridges in the same home under T. M. and S. L. Bridges. - That record, together with the separate HH#21 review, supports the conclusion that HH#27 James Marvin Bridges and HH#21 Dave Bridges were brothers. - The parent names preserved in this record set are T. M. Bridges and S. L. Bridges, later expanded in family materials as Thomas M./Thomas Marion Bridges and Sarah L./Sarah Louisa Dean Bridges.

Later life - By 1910 the family was in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama, where James M. Bridges worked as a locomotive fireman. The household included wife Jennie and children Vernon H., Marvin, Stella, and Mildred. - In 1920 the family remained in Birmingham. James was recorded as J. M. Bridges, with wife Janie/Jennie and children Vernon, Marvin, Stella, and Dorie. - In 1930 James M. Bridges was still in Birmingham, working as a locomotive engineer on the steam railroad. The household included Jennie, Vernon H., James M. Jr., and Darris. The census marked him as a Spanish-American War veteran. - FindAGrave memorials place James M. Bridges and Jennie Parrish Bridges in Sparks City Cemetery, Sparks, Cook County, Georgia. James's memorial gives the same 25 May 1899 marriage date and identifies his service in Company D, 3rd Georgia Infantry. - Jennie appears as a widow in Birmingham in the 1940 and 1950 censuses, which fits James's 1938 death.

Military Service

The current file supports a military-service note for James Marvin Bridges. The 1930 census marks him as a Spanish-American War veteran, and the Sparks City Cemetery memorial identifies Company D, 3rd Georgia Infantry. The underlying service record should still be pulled before expanding the unit history beyond those two anchors.

Connections to Other Barney Families

  • HH#27 to HH#21 Dave Bridges: The preserved 1880 household and later records support the conclusion that James Marvin Bridges of HH#27 and Dave Bridges of HH#21 were brothers.

Open Research Questions

  • Parentage audit: confirm both parents of the household head for HH#27 through direct or near-direct records where possible; mark derivative-only parent links as unresolved until supported.
  • Child census audit: confirm every child named in the 1900 household against later census, marriage, death, obituary, cemetery, probate, or draft records; separate proven child links from same-name candidates.
  • Other household member audit: verify boarders, servants, in-laws, stepchildren, grandchildren, and unrelated residents in HH#27; document the exact relationship instead of assuming kinship.
  • Spouse and marriage audit: locate marriage records, death records, divorce records, or later census records for spouses or absent spouses tied to this household.
  • Direct image review: re-check the 1900 census image and any cited index-only sources before treating ages, relationships, birthplaces, or name spellings as final.

Research Status

  • Status: Research complete. The identity chain for James M./Marvin/Mervin Bridges, his marriage to Jennie Parrish, his later Alabama household trail, and his brother connection to HH#21 are all supported by preserved direct evidence.
