The Barney History Project: The people, places, and stories of Barney, Georgia

Household #2: Thompson, Edwyn

Back to the 1900 Census & Household Index

In the 1900 Barney census, Edwyn Thompson headed a 4-person household. The table below preserves the exact names, relationships, ages, birthplaces, and occupations recorded for the household.

Household Snapshot

The census records a 4-person household with 1 spouse or marital partner and 2 children.

The head's listed work was Physician; that gives this page its occupational context without repeating the census table below.

Reported birthplaces span Florida, Mississippi, and South Carolina, pointing to movement into Barney or family formation across county or state lines.

Newspaper and Public-Record Trail

This section flags public-record leads separate from the census table. The detailed discussion stays in the family narrative, research status, and source citations below.

1900 Census Household

Children and Later Trails

This section is reserved for later-life child evidence. No later spouse, death, burial, obituary, probate, separate household, or descendant-line identification has been added here yet from direct records.

Family Narrative

Edwyn Thompson was listed as a 43-year-old physician, born in Mississippi in May 1857. Susan Thompson was listed as his wife, age 39, born in South Carolina in February 1861. Their daughters Annie and Ida were both born in Florida, Annie in November 1887 and Ida in June 1893, which suggests the family lived in Florida before moving to Barney.

The 1903 newspaper item gives the household one later Barney anchor. The Valdosta Times printed an Adel News report on 8 Sep 1903 saying Miss Annie Thompson, daughter of Dr. Thompson of Barney, narrowly escaped death during an electrical storm the previous Saturday morning. She was ironing on the back porch when lightning shattered a post within three feet of her, knocked her unconscious, and bruised her face. The article says she was revived after medical attention in about half an hour and was recovering.

Open Research Questions

  • Parentage audit: confirm both parents of the household head for HH#2 through direct or near-direct records where possible; mark derivative-only parent links as unresolved until supported.
  • Child census audit: confirm every child named in the 1900 household against later census, marriage, death, obituary, cemetery, probate, or draft records; separate proven child links from same-name candidates.
  • Other household member audit: verify boarders, servants, in-laws, stepchildren, grandchildren, and unrelated residents in HH#2; document the exact relationship instead of assuming kinship.
  • Spouse and marriage audit: locate marriage records, death records, divorce records, or later census records for spouses or absent spouses tied to this household.
  • Direct image review: re-check the 1900 census image and any cited index-only sources before treating ages, relationships, birthplaces, or name spellings as final.

Research Status

  • Status: Further research needed. The household is secure in the 1900 census and has a useful 1903 newspaper lead for Annie, but the family has not yet been tied to confirmed 1880 or 1910 census records, marriage records, death records, obituaries, cemetery records, or a proven physician-register identity.
  • Research attempts: FamilySearch, Ancestry, Brave web search, FindAGrave-index/web searches, Huxford's History of Brooks County physician register, and Stephen W. Edmondson's Remembering Morven and the Old 660th District. The E. B. Thompson and W. B. Thompson physician references remain leads only; the source notes below preserve the details.

Sources

  • The Valdosta Times (Valdosta, Georgia), 8 Sep 1903, page 3, "A Lady's Narrow Escape," reprinted from the Adel News; user-supplied clipping/PDF.
  • FindAGrave / cemetery search: NEGATIVE — A Brooks County cemetery pass found no memorial in May 2026. A direct FindAGrave browser search on 21 June 2026 found no accepted memorial for HH#2: Edwyn Thompson with the Georgia filter returned no matches; broader Edwyn/Edwin Thompson searches returned same-name or initial-only candidates outside the current evidence trail; E. B. Thompson searches returned candidates but none tied to Barney, Brooks County, or the Huxford physician lead; Susan Thompson results did not match the household's known South Carolina/Florida/Georgia trail. This remains a negative search note, not proof that no burial record exists.
  • Huxford: Checked The History of Brooks County, Georgia, 1858-1948, physician-register section, pp. 258-260 in the OCR. Stephen W. Bourquine/Bourquin is listed; E. B. Thompson is listed as born in Noxubee County, Mississippi, with a Tulane College diploma dated March 1878. This is a strong lead for HH#2 because of the Mississippi birthplace and physician occupation, but no Huxford text currently proves that entry is Edwyn Thompson of HH#2.
  • Remembering Morven and the Old 660th District: Stephen W. Edmondson, Remembering Morven and the Old 660th District (Bloomington, IN: iUniverse, 2014; ISBN 9781491732489), includes a separate local-history passage saying W. B. Thompson of Tulane Medical College came to Barney after Dr. Bourquin died. This may be related to the Huxford E. B. Thompson lead or may represent another Thompson physician; it needs follow-up before merging the identities.
