Jesse Chambers

Back to the contemporary-reports table

Identity grade: Verified

Jesse Chambers was the young mechanic from the Barney neighborhood who married Nellie Bennett in Berrien County on March 17, 1898.

Barney connection

The contemporary marriage notice places Chambers in the Barney neighborhood. A Brooks County voter registration dated May 12, 1898, independently places him in the county soon after the marriage.

Census and civil record

The 1900 census records Jesse, wife Nellie, and daughter Osa Lee in Berrien County. The household and marriage record explain why he does not appear in the Barney enumeration.

Military review

Born about 1871-1873, Chambers was not Civil War eligible. No later military service was proved.

Evidence limits

The 1900 census gives a January 1871 birth, while the voter registration implies 1873. The discrepancy does not affect the spouse, marriage, and county chain.
