James Perry Peeples
Back to the contemporary-reports table
Identity grade: Strong probable
The Perry Peeples named in Barney-area reports is strongly identified as James Perry Peeples, a Quitman stock dealer. The newspapers use Perry rather than James, so the identification remains strong probable rather than verified.
Barney connection
In February 1899, Peeples recognized S. L. Hall's stolen horse in Quitman and telephoned Barney. A separate December 1903 report names Perry Peeples in the shooting of Ed Cook at Barney. These reports establish repeated contact with Barney, not residence there.
Census and civil record
The 1900 census places James P. Peeples in Quitman with wife Emma and sons Herbert and Charley. The same family appears in 1910 under a badly corrupted index entry. No Peeples household appears in the Barney enumeration.
Military review
No military service was proved in the documented identity-linked searches.
Evidence limits
The newspapers do not print James. A contemporary record explicitly calling the Quitman stock dealer James Perry Peeples would make the identity verified.
