The Barney History Project: The people, places, and stories of Barney, Georgia

George Washington Prine Jr.

Back to the contemporary-reports table

Identity grade: Verified

George Washington Prine Jr. was the G. W. Prine Jr. whose sudden death at Barney was reported in September 1898.

Barney connection

The reports say Prine died of heart failure at his Barney home on September 3, 1898. His remains were buried at Sparks, and the notices said he left a wife and four children or four little girls.

Census and civil record

Prine died before the 1900 enumeration, which explains the absence of a Prine household. The 1870 census and cemetery record identify him as a son of George Washington Prine.

Military review

Born in 1863, Prine was too young for normal Confederate service. He died during the Spanish-American War, and no service was proved.

Evidence limits

The memorial lists wife Catherine 'Cattie' Stalvey and five children, including an infant. That compiled family count does not exactly match the newspaper's four-child wording.
