E. D. Ponder

Back to the contemporary-reports table

Identity grade: Verified

E. D. Ponder was the Brooks County coroner who conducted the 1901 inquest north of Barney. The 1880 census and repeated county tax entries establish him as a Quitman resident born about 1833.

Barney connection

Ponder's appearance in the Barney report arose from his county office. He was not a missing Barney householder.

Census and civil record

The 1880 Quitman census records E. D. Ponder with wife F. Ponder and their children. Repeated Brooks County tax entries preserve the same initials and locality.

Military review

An exact-name Georgia Confederate pension index in Brooks and Wilkinson counties confirms veteran status. The unit is not established by the index entry alone.

Evidence limits

The original pension images and compiled service record have not been inspected. His unit, enlistment, and discharge details therefore remain unresolved.
