Theodore Byrd: online research dossier

Back to the Foster Profiles index

Research completed: August 18, 2026
Scope: the Theodore Byrd named at Foster, Brooks County, Georgia, in March 1892

Identity conclusion

The Foster man is possibly the Theodore, or “Theo.,” Byrd documented in Carver's Creek Township, Cumberland County, North Carolina, from 1886 through at least 1904. The identification is not proved.

The evidence chain is unusually specific. The Foster column says Theodore Byrd had worked four years in naval stores, obtained a four- or five-month furlough, and was leaving for North Carolina to visit friends and relatives. It also says Archie McBryde, then temporarily at Foster, might travel with him. Five months before that notice, an Archie McBryde was reported at Little River Academy in Cumberland County. North Carolina newspapers repeatedly place an exact-name Theo. Byrd in neighboring Carver's Creek, and a 1910 census index places a Theodore Byrd, born about 1860, in Cumberland County. [1]-[9]

That combination makes him the best candidate located, but no record calls the North Carolina man a naval-stores worker, names Foster, or shows him traveling with McBryde. His parents, spouse, death, and burial remain unresolved.

What the Foster article establishes

The March 16, 1892 Foster correspondent reported that:

  • “Mr. Theodore Byrd” had obtained a furlough;
  • he expected to leave that afternoon for North Carolina to visit friends and relatives;
  • he intended to rest four or five months after four years of labor in the naval-stores business;
  • Archie McBryde, who was ill but mobile, planned to accompany Byrd to Hahira and might continue with him to North Carolina. [1]

The wording makes Byrd a worker or employee in the naval-stores trade, not an identified owner or partner. It does not state his job, employer, age, race, home county, or whether he returned to Foster.

North Carolina identity chain

Carver's Creek public life

An exact-name “Theo. Byrd” appears repeatedly in Cumberland County civic records:

  • In July 1886, Carver's Creek Democrats selected him as a congressional-convention delegate. [2]
  • In July and September 1894, he was again named among Carver's Creek delegates; the September meeting elected him secretary of the township executive committee. [3]-[4]
  • In 1895 he served as an election judge. [5]
  • In 1902 he was again a Carver's Creek delegate. [6]
  • A 1904 county-expense statement paid “Byrd Theo” for election work or judicial service. [7]

These notices show an adult Theodore Byrd rooted in the same North Carolina county to which the Foster worker planned to travel.

Census and land evidence

Ancestry's public 1910 index has one exact-name Theodore Byrd, born about 1860, residing in Cumberland County. The indexed image is 4449912_00104, record 20428266. The public result did not expose the household, occupation, race, or enumeration district, and the logged-in image could not be opened during this run. [8]

Land-sale notices published in 1919 and 1920 recited earlier deeds for two lots on Main Street in Linden, Cumberland County, to Theo. Byrd. The notices establish local property dealings but do not give the deed dates in the quoted text or connect the owner to Georgia. [9]-[10]

Candidate assessment and exclusions

Cumberland County Theodore Byrd

Grade: Possible; best located candidate. The exact name is uncommon in the searched record, the Foster article gives North Carolina as Byrd's destination, and the independent Cumberland sources place both Theodore Byrd and an exact-name Archie McBryde in the same county near the Foster date. Without an occupational, kinship, travel, or direct Byrd-McBryde bridge, the evidence does not justify a stronger identification.

Theodore Byrd of Lee County, Illinois, and Webster County, Iowa

Excluded. Ancestry's 1870 census index identifies a Theodore Byrd born about 1859 in Lee County, Illinois. The Find a Grave index gives that man as born July 23, 1858, in Lee County and dead July 9, 1896, at Moorland, Iowa. Nothing found connects him to North Carolina or South Georgia. [12]-[13]

Theodore W. Byrd of Campbell County, Kentucky

Excluded. Census indexes place him in Campbell County in 1860, 1870, 1880, 1910, and 1920. His continuous Kentucky chain does not fit the Cumberland County political and property record. [14]

Later Theodore Roosevelt Byrds

Excluded by age. The North Carolina Find a Grave search results are dominated by men named Theodore Roosevelt Byrd who were born too late to have completed four years in naval stores by March 1892. [15]

What remains unknown

  • Byrd's precise naval-stores employer and duties.
  • Whether his four years ran continuously from about 1888 to 1892.
  • His exact North Carolina family and the friends or relatives he intended to visit.
  • Whether the 1910 Cumberland census man and the land grantee are the same person, though the match is strong.
  • Whether Byrd returned to Foster after his furlough.
  • His death date and burial place.

  • Newspapers.com: exact and variant terms "Theodore Byrd", "Theo Byrd", "Theodore Byrd naval stores", "Byrd Foster", and the March 1892 image. A fresh authenticated search could not be completed because the local CDP connection timed out twice; no further retry was made. The previously saved authenticated result supplied the article OCR and image ID.
  • DigitalNC: "Theodore Byrd", "Theo Byrd", "Theodore Burd", "Theodore Bird", "T Byrd Cumberland", "Archie McBryde", and place terms "Carver's Creek", "Linden", and "Little River", with emphasis on 1880-1925. Productive pages are sources 2-7 and 9-11.
  • Georgia Historic Newspapers: exact and separated-name searches for Theodore/Byrd, 1880-1930. Results were later namesakes or page collisions; no additional Foster-era identity article was accepted.

Census and genealogy

  • Ancestry public indexes: exact Theodore Byrd, birth centered on 1860 plus or minus twenty years; census and all-category searches; North Carolina, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, and Kentucky candidates reviewed. The 1910 Cumberland record was retained as the best candidate. The logged-in record image was inaccessible during this run, so household and occupation were not claimed.
  • Find a Grave: exact Theodore Byrd in North Carolina and nationwide; no plausible nineteenth-century Cumberland memorial was found in the documented search.
  • FamilySearch public results page was checked, but record details required a working authenticated browser and were not independently inspected. This is an access gap, not a negative finding.
