Archie McBryde: online research dossier

Back to the Foster Profiles index

Research completed: August 18, 2026
Scope: the Archie “MeBryde”/McBryde named at Foster, Brooks County, Georgia, in March 1892

Identity conclusion

The Foster man is possibly the Archie McBryde reported at Little River Academy, Cumberland County, North Carolina, on October 1, 1891. The uncommon exact name, the five-month interval, and the Foster report's statement that he might continue to North Carolina with Theodore Byrd make this the best located candidate. They do not prove the match. [1]-[2]

Two later census-index candidates remain open: Archie McBryde, born about 1866 and living in Marion County, South Carolina, in 1900; and J. Archie McBryde, born about 1863 and living in Lee County, North Carolina, in 1910. Neither index provides a bridge to Foster, Theodore Byrd, naval stores, or the 1891 Little River notice. [3]-[4]

What the Foster article establishes

The March 16, 1892 column prints the surname in OCR as "MeBryde"; project reports normalize it to McBryde. It says:

  • Archie was “temporarily staying at Foster”;
  • he was sick but able to accompany Theodore Byrd to Hahira that evening;
  • he might continue with Byrd to North Carolina. [1]

The article does not say Archie worked in naval stores. The four years of naval-stores labor belongs grammatically to Theodore Byrd. It also does not state Archie's age, home, family, employer, or reason for staying at Foster.

Best candidate: Little River Academy, North Carolina

On October 1, 1891, The Fayetteville Observer reported that “Mr. Archie McBryde of Little River Academy was in town a few days last week.” This notice precedes Archie's Foster stay by about five months. [2]

The same county had a politically active Theo. Byrd in Carver's Creek by 1886 and repeatedly from 1894 through 1904. The Foster column places Archie and Theodore together and says both might travel toward North Carolina. This is a real geographic cluster, but no North Carolina source found in this pass names the two men together. [5]-[7]

Grade for the Little River identification: Possible. An additional notice saying Archie returned from Georgia, worked in naval stores, or associated with Theodore Byrd would be needed for Strong probable.

Other candidates and conflicts

Archie McBryde, Marion County, South Carolina

The 1900 census index identifies an Archie McBryde born about 1866 in Marion County, South Carolina, record 59205173, image 4120568_00104. His age and Carolina residence fit broadly. No Foster or North Carolina association was found. Possible namesake; not identified as the Foster man. [3]

J. Archie McBryde, Lee County, North Carolina

The 1910 census index identifies J. Archie McBryde, born about 1863, in Lee County, record 163039603, image 4450009_00106. His North Carolina residence makes the record worth retaining, but the extra first initial and lack of an 1892 bridge matter. Possible candidate; not merged. [4]

Archie McBride, Washington County, Georgia

The 1910 census index identifies an Archie McBride born about 1868 in Washington County, Georgia. The surname spelling and Georgia residence make him worth noting, but he is roughly 150 miles from Foster and no South Georgia or North Carolina link was found. Possible namesake only. [8]

Archie M. McBryde in Washington, D.C.

An 1895 Fayetteville notice says Archie M. McBryde was visiting the city and then lived in Washington City. The middle initial and later residence distinguish the notice from the uninitialed Little River man; they might still be the same person, but the paper does not say so. Unresolved, not merged. [9]

Archie McBryde in a 1919 veterans list

A 1919 Robesonian page includes Archie McBryde in a list of Confederate veterans. If the classification applies literally, this man would have been substantially older than the census candidates born in the 1860s. The page does not connect him to Foster and may list living or commemorated veterans. Separate older candidate unless additional records prove otherwise. [10]

Cemetery exclusions

The exact-surname Find a Grave results located an Archie McBryde born in 1916 and Archie B. McBryde born in 1902. Both were born after the Foster event. The McBride results include an Archie born about 1870 who died in Raleigh in 1933, but no Foster, Little River, or naval-stores link appears. [11]-[13]

  • Why his stay was temporary and what illness he had.
  • Whether he continued past Hahira to North Carolina.
  • Whether the Little River, Marion County, Lee County, Washington City, and veterans-list references concern one person or several.
  • Archie's parents, spouse, death, and burial.

Newspapers

  • Newspapers.com: stored authenticated results and the known March 1892 page were checked. Planned variants were "Archie McBryde", "Archie McBride", "Archibald McBryde", "MeBryde", "Foster", "Hahira", and "naval stores", 1880-1930. The fresh CDP search failed twice with the same connection timeout and was stopped; the access gap is disclosed.
  • DigitalNC: exact and variant surname searches with "Archie", "A. McBryde", "Little River", "Cumberland", "Lee", "Robeson", and "Theodore Byrd", chiefly 1880-1930. The productive pages are sources 2, 9, and 10. Other hits were later namesakes, female references to Mrs. Archie McBryde, or page collisions.
  • Georgia Historic Newspapers: McBryde, McBride, and separated-name searches, chiefly 1880-1930. The 1904 and 1909 McBride pages did not yield a relevant same-phrase OCR reading and were rejected.
