Uriah Rogers

Uriah Rogers was established in the future Brooks County area by 1844. The original Lowndes County tax digest places him in Captain Blair's District immediately after James Rogers and Thomas F. Rogers. James and Thomas each returned 163 acres in District 12, Land Lot 199. Uriah returned a poll but no land.

The 1830 Thomas County census and the 1850 Lowndes County census provide a strong-probable household chain for the older Uriah. The 1850 schedule records him as a 43-year-old North Carolina-born farmer with $800 in real estate. Elizabeth Rogers and nine younger household members follow him, although that census does not state their relationships.

The shared surname and consecutive tax entries show a local Rogers network, not a family tree. No inspected record establishes Uriah's relationship to James Rogers, Thomas F. Rogers, Isaac J. Rogers, or Priscilla Jane Rogers Folsom.

The underlying Brooks County deeds have now been inspected. Uriah sold District 12, Land Lot 513 property to Joseph J. Rogers in 1868 and to Robert Milton Rogers in 1873. Both were cash sales using ordinary warranty language; neither deed states a relationship. Joseph's status as Uriah's son is verified by the previously inspected death certificate. Robert Milton's placement in Uriah's 1860 household, combined with the 1873 conveyance, makes him a strong-probable son, but not an original-record-verified son. John W. Rogers witnessed both transactions, while Francis R. Rogers witnessed Joseph's deed and Ashley Uriah Rogers witnessed Robert Milton's deed.

The James Rogers estate deed identifies Ann Rogers as James's widow, Thomas F. Rogers as administrator, and Isaac J. Rogers as the highest bidder for estate land. It does not call Thomas or Isaac a relative. Thomas's later estate records prove that Mary Rogers was one of his heirs and identify several minor children, but they supply no bridge to Uriah. Mary is strong probable as the Mary Maloney who married in October 1866 and became guardian of Thomas's orphan child Melissa in January 1867. Her exact relationship to Thomas remains unresolved. Uriah therefore belongs on the supplemental early-settler roster, while his connection to the James-Thomas-Isaac branch and to Priscilla remains unresolved.
