Thomas Folsom

Thomas Folsom was living in Lowndes County by 1830. His name is legible on the original federal census schedule, and an 1836 county militia return lists him as a private in the 660th District. That return was a general-militia list, not proof that he served in combat.

Folsom's clearest public role came when Brooks County was created in 1858. The creating act directed that county business be conducted at his home until officials selected a permanent county seat. Later county history says the first Inferior Court sittings were held there before business moved to Quitman.

A Lowndes County deed index also points to an 1837 transaction involving Thomas Folsom and District 12, Lot 217. The original deed has not been inspected, and no reviewed land record connects that lot to the future town of Barney.

Older histories place Folsom among the 1824–1825 arrivals and list him in the area through 1850. Only his 1830 census appearance has been confirmed from an original schedule in this research. The proposed 1850 image may name a different man. The 1938 genealogy makes Thomas a son of George Folsom and Edith Penny and a brother of Israel, Pennywell, and Elizabeth. That relationship is secondary-supported; his reported life dates and the broader family reconstruction still need original-record confirmation.

Thomas Folsom is best understood as an early Lowndes resident whose home briefly served Brooks County government. The surviving evidence does not yet show that he lived at Barney or directly shaped the later railroad town.
