Thomas F. Rogers

Thomas F. Rogers was present in old Lowndes County by 1844. The original tax digest lists him in Captain Blair's District with 163 acres in District 12, Land Lot 199. James Rogers returned another 163 acres in the same lot on the preceding line, and Uriah Rogers followed Thomas in the tax list. Those entries establish a Rogers land cluster in the territory later included in Brooks County. They do not state how the men were related.

The 1850 census indexes Thomas as “Thomas F. Rogen,” a thirty-year-old North Carolina-born farmer with $400 in real estate. Nancy and five younger residents appear in the household, but the schedule does not identify their relationships. A later county history included Thomas among the families living at Troupville and named him as a serving Brooks County grand juror in November 1859.

A Brooks County deed index supplies a second land anchor. Thomas F. Rogers conveyed 245 acres in District 12, Land Lot 259 to Ebenezer G. Folsom by warranty deed dated November 21, 1859. The index verifies the parties, date, acreage, lot, district, and recording reference. It does not identify Ebenezer as a relative or mention Priscilla Jane Folsom.

Thomas therefore qualifies as a supplemental early settler through the original 1844 tax entry. His exact arrival year is unknown. The shared Lot 199 entries and the later Rogers-to-Folsom deed make a family or close-associate connection plausible, but the relationship between Thomas, James, Uriah, and Priscilla remains unresolved.

Thomas died before February 1865. His estate records identify Mary Rogers as one of his heirs, while later guardianship bonds concern several orphan children. Melissa A. J. Rogers is individually clear. Aaron, Phebe A., and William Rogers are strong-probable readings from the 1868 bond and the 1860 household. Later bond names require further handwriting review.

A Mary Rogers married Thomas McLoney in Brooks County on October 4, 1866. Mary Maloney became Melissa's guardian in January 1867 and appears with Thomas Malony in Quitman in 1870. These records make the two Mary identities strong probable, but they do not state Mary's exact relationship to Thomas F. Rogers. The evidence does not justify calling her his widow.
